Hi everyone,

Happy hari raya, I stumbler on this very old thread, i guess smile.gif and got attracted by the topic, here is my own UX on linux over the years, it all started in year 2000-2002, wow I am very old.

Back then, it was hard to learn or deal with linux problem, where all my PC kaki are all win based... sad.gif and getting help from internet is not easy if your 1st linux distro installation doest get the modem to work!

Fast forward to year 2006-08, where I got my hand on one of the Ubuntu distro, forgot the version number, forgive me guys. I do remember I did the installation on the Pentium 4 (Dell) desktop, everything just work out of the box.

And time goes by, in year 2010, I bought a 2nd hand Dell laptop with AMD64 cpu that came with it. And I upgrade the bios under win xp b4 I removed the default OS. Well according to Dell that this laptop only supported upto 2GB (max), but Ubuntu linux told me differences things, " sudo lshw " .

walah... it shown the Dell laptop can support upto 4GB, hmmm... after some research on the web, I bought new 4GB ram and remove the old ram, here goes the new 4GB ram. Then install Ubuntu 64 bit OS. Done deal smile.gif happy os, happy laptop , and a happy guy

drum roll, here the new toy in year 2013, my new Asus K46C . This time Asus told me (what they told the world in their product specs, this K46C just run at 8GB max). As always, "sudo lshw" it shown 16GB max. Alright, so I told my pc supplier to install 16GB on it, after it send by from Asus with the new 16GB installed. By then I am ready to roll up my sleeve and install the Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit OS on it. Everything work fine, aside for the display card, battery time and the brightness bug, I can live with those bug smile.gif

a side note : if anyone play with the mini-itx (intel box), this baby can hold up to 8GB ram, not 4GB as they advertised !

I'm lusting over this rig but it sure as hell won't ever get to this side of the pond. Closest thing probably would be the latest Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro but it's not the small OTG size I'm looking for. Hopefully there's a Yoga 3 11 in the pipeline or anything else similar.

Sorry for very late reply.
Mint LMDE can upgrade to newer versions "forever" without breaking anything.
Base distro is debian, not ubuntu.

I think for compatibility questions, Google for that particular model and its relevant models, most things are covered in Archlinux wiki there and can applied on Ubuntu too

generally should be no problem but do take a test drive with an Ubuntu live USB or you haven't bought yet? hmm.gif

Cant go wrong with Thinkpad.

But still, you have to face one universal linux problem:
Fingerprint sensor driver that actually work is nonexistent.

Found this:
https://certification.ubuntu.com/
Whatever is listed there is likely to have good linux support.
