I am using Android box Himedia Q5 quad core. Installed Netflix via Google Playstore and subscribe to HD account.

I cannot find Dolby Digital cotent. Been watching Jessica Jones and Man of Steel. No surround sound. When click the speaker icon on the screen it only adjust the volume.

I'm getting Dolby Digital and 1080p with chromecast connected to Anthem Mrx receiver. Quite decent for a rm100+ device.

Chromecast won't drain much battery of phone. Once cast to tv, phone can go to sleep, but it will get info about the playing progress of the movie. So it will drain a bit battery but not so much as playing directly in the phone.

Thanks for the info!

Have you considered roku or firetv stick?
Unless your parents using of the devices listed here

https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23939

They won't be getting any more than 480p streaming only
*
Roku or Fire TV Stick dont have these issues?
What if use laptop? Will it cast in 1080p then? with Chromecast?

QUOTE(voncrane @ Jan 10 2016, 10:04 AM)
To get both iflix & Netflix would be the chromecast. Select content to play with a phone, tablet or pc. Cast to the Chromecast & it takes over media playback. Your phone then acts like a remote for play, pause, jump forward, etc. You can even power off the phone and the content will still keep playing on the TV.
*
Thanks for the info, but as mentioned above, i cant just use any phone to control it and get HD? Like i have an old Xiaomi Mi3, just figured id make it a "remote" if i get chromecast. How do you browse and look at suggestions etc for Netflix/Iflix? with the phone? My parents not so tech savvy, and the netflix web browser UI really easy and nice to use, is one of the reasons i want to get them a sub.

Get an Android box. A decent Android box sells from rm200 -500

How is the UI using an Android Box? My dad really likes the netflix UI on his laptop and wants to use on his tv to watch instead of his crummy 13" laptop lol. Can recommend any good ones around RM300 mark?

Both devices are certified to stream at 1080p
Last time I check, depending on the browser
Chrome/Firefox only can stream to 720p only
On Microsoft IE11/ Edge, you can stream to 1080p
But I'm not sure how to cast Netflix from Microsoft edge/ie11

i just played with local netflix a bit, just to share...

i tried to get 4k stream failed. my 4k android and 4K uhdtv not listed in the support lists. sad.gif

impt read:
QUOTE
Can I stream Netflix in Ultra HD?
https://help.netflix.com/en/node/13444]https://help.netflix.com/en/node/13444

.. no 4k content label displayed on local netflix.
.. if direct on tv, not all models of major brands support it.
.. if using other devices, only a few support it now, more may come later.
.. content seriously lacking, only 40 tv shows. rolleyes.gif
.. almost zero asian content

but... very easy to navigate, fast, smooth, good subs.

i tried just to learn something. as it is, i will not continue.

will reconsider when there are significant changes.

one thing this local netflix shows - if gomens can control less and corps make less profits, streaming hd/uhd videos is a piece of cake! tongue.gif

*Using a pc.. Download the native Netflix app for Windows, send media to Chromecast. Use IE/Edge browser, select title to play, send to Chromecast..
*Using a phone or tablet.. Open Netflix app on phone scroll or search for title to play.. Send to Chromecast. You'll get full HD as Google's Chromecast is Netflix certified.

Do not simply buy any android box & expect full 1080p with surround sound. You'll not get it unless the box is CERTIFIED by Netflix. Read around here, it's been mentioned several times.. If you don't want to use phones or pc to cast etc, get a Roku or Nvidia Shield TV or Amazon fire TV box or Fire stick. These 3 are fully supported & have their own clean UI.. Check YouTube for videos.. There are tons there.. Don't waste your money.

Bro, on those android box/stick certified by Netflix
Is there an easy way to get some quality indication settings on the display?
Other than viewing Netflix test video that shows the resolution/bitrate

AFAIK, Nope.. However, those test videos are accurate enough.. You play the test video, give it about 5+ minutes to average out. Make sure you are not torrenting. Besides, a 1080p image on a 1080p TV is quite unmistakable... Here's the thing, on my Samsung Smart TV, while watching any video and at any point, pressing the info button on the TV remote brings up a small info window at the top left showing the time spent over time left and the current resolution being streamed. So it is possible... To summarize, Approved device + sufficient bandwidth + HD subscription = Win!..

Edit: Sufficient bandwidth being minimum 10Mbps for full HD & 30Mbps for UHD. Yeah, I'm aware that Netflix's recommendations are 5Mbps & 25Mbps respectively, but since when does minimum = okay.. It's like buying a PC, just because Microsoft says Windows needs a minimum of 1GB RAM, doesn't mean that it's sufficient in the long run.
Netflix Internet Connection Speed Requirements.

this local netflix is easy, smooth and reliable.

works on androids (all, i think), pc windows, ipad and probably all other popular devices/machines.

u can watch a show on tv in living room, move to pc in yr office and then finish up on ipad in the toilet continuously! laugh.gif

well very done for that.

big problem is very limited content.

IMO not worth the monthly subscription fee with those very very limited contents compared to original US content
I think not even 10% of it is available doh.gif

in term of price per content, iflix won the race by miles

ya, content too little for me to continue. if more content, i may want to for ease of use and reliability.

i watched NARCOS, a 10-episode tv season on netflix - smooth 100%, not a single hitch.

iflix... trouble is it only works on hand held devices and some boxes, does not work on many boxes. not sure if they designed it that way or still figuring out how to allow more boxes work! biggrin.gif

I got 1 question.. Not sure it's a silly question or has been asked before tongue.gif

I got smartDNS > Open Netflix in my TV box > Appear 'Monthly from USD7.99' and 'Start First Month Free' button > Sign Up new account > Then appear selection of criteria (Basic/Standard/etc) in RM..

I was thinking to subscribe netflix US region and not Malaysia region. Possible?

P/S: As at now I have cleared all cache and data for netflix in my tv box. sweat.gif
