Simple as to get rid of the worry about QC. Im sure if u have bought things or heard / read stories of the product from the 'certain places' u will understand. I personally experience it b4 and it gives a hell of a nightmare.

wat do u mean by locally assemble but imported unit????

actually  a lot of ppl avoid philips becos made of china, but personally from wat i see, the PQ of philips is actually not bad
*
Well the LCD unit is assemble in M'sia and imported to UK and some other countries, as told by the promoter. I do not want to take d risk, so might as well settle with a sony 40" or a Aquos 42".

To quench the curiosity on MBF S8 37" TV promo, here's a view from me as the first hand owner :

As a HTPC Monitor :
This is so far the best use of this TV for me. Connected via DVI (graphic card) to HDMI (on TV) offers excellent and and flawless picture. For the past 3 months, I have been churning out those 720p HD movies, as well as those 1080p movies which will be nicely scale-down to give you good picture.  This is the top notch highlight to me.

As ASTRO receiver.
No can do. Astro probably publish their signal over lower than standard resolution, probably less than 576. So nothing much to say here.

As Analog TV receiver
Not that bad for TV1 --> TV9.

So there you go.  I would choose Samsung anytime over Sony, in term of LCD TV. Probably because of the price and quality.

That's normal, it happens to all LCD tvs, if you view it from the side, the colour is a little washed out.

phew..finally finished going through all 26 pages of this thread..hehe..very informative all the info here smile.gif

hi guys..new here....have been trawling cyberspace in my research to get an HDMI player.

current setup is like this:

1. 42" Sharp BX5M LCD TV (max 1080i)
2. JBL 5.1 HTIB
3. QED Silver Ref. Coax (for audio and video)

intended setup:

1. For video, an upscaling dvd player through HDMI to the LCD @ 1080i
2. For audio, use the coax output from the upscaling player to my JBL receiver

What's your opinion of the intended setup?

To summarize, most ppl here quite favour the Sony 76H, Philips 5986 and Pio 400V for entry level upscalers. Philips and Pio can do 1080p, only Sony up to 1080i, but Sony apparently has the best PQ. Since my TV can support up to 1080i only, it's not a big loss if i get Sony and I doubt I will be changing TV anytime soon smile.gif

What HDMI player would be best for my setup? I play mostly ahem discs...hehe..

A bit off topic here:

1. between 720p and 1080i, which one do most of you use here? Would the PQ be very noticable?
2. also intend to get a calibration dvd, either aviaII or the new digital video essentials. anybody used it or has it before? which one to get?

thanks in advance people..sorry if i ask too many questions...still quite new to this..have to learn a lot.. nod.gif

When I was in BU for some Sony Bravia LCD demo, I didnt notice any of d problems that u mentioned. It's the V300 series. Maybe I was not looking at the angle u described.

guess you are rich ppl..
if you are rich ppl... the sony.. philips or pio is not up to your standard..
the best option for you is... go online and get OPPO DV-970HD for 720p/1080i.. biggrin.gif

No laa..not rich ppl....didn't buy the setup all one shot ler......the current setup was 'collected' over a number of years...say..about 6 years? tongue.gif

buy here a bit there a bit....the latest being the lcd tv..that's why looking to maximise the PQ output with whatever i have gathered from my previous years....see how best to rojak the whole thing to come out with best sound and PQ

for the hdmi player..it's either sony, philips or pio for me la...no $ to go for the higher end ones like denon. i want nice PQ laa but not to the hardcore extent where i must get the best. in fact, the sales guy in cmy tried to push the denon 1930 to me..offered me RM1.5k for it. i nearly fainted..haha..but that time haven't research and read up abt upscaling etc . if malaysia can get oppo, then i will put it into consideration also but since cannot get and if by getting from singapore, then bring back here no warranty bla bla...can't justify lah

so it's back to sony, philips, pio...dilemma...what's the pros and cons of each, does anyone know?

Just to share with anyone who may also be looking for HDMI player...these are the latest pricing which i got yesterday:

1. Sony 76H - RM460
2. Philips 5986 - RM430
3. Pio 400 - RM540

Looks like Sony is the overwhelming favourite based on my the forum here and my other online research. Anybody got experience with the Philips 5986? Since price is almost the same.....it's also tempting coz it's the King of Playability smile.gif

Honestly, 76H is good in playing those poor quality dvds, no freezes or pauses unlike my previous Pioneer and Denon dvd players. Besides that, the Mediatek chip used in 76H gives out very decent looking picture quality and for the price, I guess no one will complain about it. I know the 78H will be replacing 76H soon and it should be available pretty soon. My friend bought the 78H model from Thailand, frankly, I dislike the design, 76H looks nicer, the only advantage here is that the 78H will output to 1080p and not restricted to 1080i like the 76H model.

I agree with sunauto. Although I never tried any other upscaler dvd player, the NS76 never let me down. I tried once playing a poor quality dvd on normal samsung dvd, its freeze. With Ns76, no problem at all.
By the way my ns76 was fried 2 months ago due to over voltage (stupid tnb). I sent it to sony repair service centre at midvalley on monday evening, and on wednesday morning they fixed it already. So fast....
And its free!!

Sony it is then! biggrin.gif

Most of the shops I been to has been commenting Sony players are sensitive...selective towards the disc they read. Most recommend Philips over Sony because of this. Other reasons are Philips can support USB and up to 1080p. Since most of you here have had good experience with Sony, I'm convinced.

Maybe I can squeeze them to lower the price a bit more since new 78H model is out. It's not launched here yet right? Not updated at Sony website. Anyway, my tv can only go up to 1080i...so no point lah.

Thanks folks! rclxms.gif
