If anyone is curious, the RPG the guy is carrying (which is actually a chinese-made Type 69 grenade launcher) has a HE-airburst warhead for anti-personnel duties.

On impact, the warhead will detonate a small explosive charge to 'bounce' itself to a height of 2 meters where it then detonate the main charge and scatters 800 steel ball bearings along with it.

Interesting, I have heard of the antipersonnel RPG round but never seen it. What a low-tech fuze method! Does Msian army have these AP RPG rounds for our infantry squads?
QUOTE(Fat & Fluffy @ Jan 20 2016, 11:59 AM)
but according to description above, the 'HE-airburst' that you mention sounds more like a frag warhead
*
Well... technically all RPGs are 'airburst' in that after 5 seconds of flight they self-detonate. But this is probably the AP frag round.

I personally never saw any RPG-7 in ATM service (real or photos) ever used with anything than the basic HEAT warhead. But that's just me. Also, our RPG-7s are ones made in Pakistan.

I also wonder if you could use chinese-made RPG rounds with Russian launchers? hmm.gif

Parliament pushes for boost of defense industry

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The House of Representatives' (DPR's) Commission I and the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) held a hearing on the development of the primary weaponry defense system (Alutsista) at the Navy Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, Tuesday.

The hearing was held to discuss the modernization of alutsista as the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) chief had earlier emphasized that strengthening the Navy and Air Force (TNI AU) is a priority, Commission I Chairman Mahfuds Siddiq stated.

During the meeting, a plan was also discussed to grant some naval ships to the Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla).

In accordance with the nation's maritime axis vision, the naval weaponry system must be modernized to guard Indonesian waters, he affirmed.

"Currently, the TNI AL is actively supporting the tasks of the maritime affairs and fishery ministry, but it does not only detain boats involved in illegal fishing activities as it has to guard the nation's entire maritime territory," the politician from the Justice and Prosperous Party (PKS) said.

Chief of Staff of the Navy Admiral Ade Supandi said the hearing with the legislators also discussed defense budgeting.

"The role of the DPR's Commission I is crucial," he added.

The first priority is to stop operating old or outdated alutsista. Ten warships will enter the conservation stage and will no longer be operated.

However, the warships will still be maintained if their replacements are not yet available.

Therefore, the Navy needs the DPR's support regarding the allocation of the budget, he said.

Communication with the Commission I is crucial for the Navy's development planning, he added.

On Monday, PT PAL Indonesia launched two warships: a Destroyer with guided missiles (PKR) and a Strategic Sea lift Vessel (SSV)-1.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli emphasized that it is time for Indonesia to control the shipbuilding market in Asia as the nation has the ability to build modern warships.

He said the government will continue to support the maritime industry by providing facilities, including for the shipbuilding industry.

Technology SITREP: How Russian engineering made the current operation in Syria possible

user posted image

QUOTE
Russian airstrikes are amazingly accurate even though the Russians are flying at over 5000m above ground, well out of reach of man portable air defense systems (MANPADS).
QUOTE
They are even flying at night and in bad weather.  This is even more puzzling considering that most of the work, at least in quantitative terms, is done by old SU-24s (first deployed in 1974) and SU-25 (first deployed in 1981).
QUOTE
The original bombs of “WWII” technology were simple gravity bombs.
QUOTE
with the increase in the speed of aircraft a one second delay in releasing a bomb could easily result in a miss by 600-800 meters
QUOTE
some reinforced targets needed a direct hit (command posts, bridges, etc.).  Two main type of guided bombs were developed: laser-guided and TV guided.
QUOTE
The laser guided bomb work very simply: the aircraft (or ground spotter) “paints” the target with a laser beam
QUOTE
The TV guided bomb also operates in a simple manner: the weapons system officers centers the bomb’s TV camera on the target and glides the bomb towards it
QUOTE
The advent of satellite guidance ushered a new era for guided weapons.  For the first time it became possible to use GPS (or, for the Russians, GLONASS) satellite signals to guide a bomb to a target.
QUOTE
The Americans came up with an elegant solution: the JDAM.  The Joint Direct Attack Munition kit was a way to convert “dumb” (non-guided) bombs into “smart” (guided) bombs by attaching a special kit to them

user posted image

QUOTE
The Russians came up with a much better solution.

Instead of mounting a kit on an old bomb and lose the kit every time, the Russians mounted a JDAM-like kit, but on the airplane.

Introducing the SVP-24:
QUOTE
SVP stands for “специализированная вычислительная подсистема” or “special computing subsystem”.  What this system does is that it constantly compares the position of the aircraft and the target (using the GLONASS satellite navigation system), it measures the environmental parameters (pressure, humidity, windspeed, speed, angle of attack, etc.).  It can also receive additional information from datalinks from AWACs aircraft, ground stations, and other aircraft.  The SVP-24 then computes an “envelope” (speed, altitude, course) inside which the dumb bombs are automatically released exactly at the precise moment when their unguided flight will bring them right over the target (with a 3-5m accuracy).
QUOTE
every 30+ year old Russian “dumb” bomb can now be delivered by a 30+ year old Russian aircraft with the same precision as a brand new guided bomb delivered by a top of the line modern bomber
QUOTE
pilot does not even have to worry about targeting anything.  He just enters the target’s exact coordinates into his system, flies within a defined envelope and the bombs are automatically released for him.  He can place his full attention on detecting any hostiles (aircraft, missiles, AA guns).  And the best part of this all is that this system can be used in high altitude bombing runs, well over the 5000m altitude which MANPADs cannot reach.  Finally, clouds, smoke, weather conditions or time of the day play no role in this whatsoever.
QUOTE
since the SVP-24 is mounted on the aircraft and not the bomb, it can be reused as often as needed
QUOTE
SVP-24 has now been confirmed to be mounted on the Russian SU-24s, SU-25s, Tu-22M3 “Backfires” and the Kamov Ka-50 and Ka-52 helicopters, the venerable MiG-27 and even the L-39 trainer

There's also VOG-25P grenade which also can "jump" after it hit the ground.

Islamist rebels launch another offensive in northern Latakia

user posted image

On Wednesday afternoon inside the Latakia Governorate’s northern countryside, the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) launched another counter-offensive in the Turkmen Mountains (Jabal Al-Turkmen) to recapture the territory they lost to the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard last week.

The Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra and the Free Syrian Army were able to seize the villages of ‘Ayn Al-Hawr, Wadi Sheikhan, and Al-Ghumaymiyah after a violent battle with the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade and the National Defense Forces near the strategic mountaintop of Khan Al-Jouz.

Following the capture of Al-Hawz, the Islamist rebels began to lose momentum after their forces spread too thin along the front-lines of Jabal Al-Turkmen; this allowed for the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade – backed by the National Defense Forces and thee Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) – to regain the initiative near ‘Ayn Al-Hawz.

According to the battlefield correspondent Eyad Al-Hussein, the Syrian Armed Forces were able to recapture the village of ‘Ayn Al-Hawz and much of Al-Ghumaymiyah, while also forestalling the rebel offensive.

Currently, clashes are still ongoing between the Syrian Armed Forces and the Islamist rebels inside the village Al-Ghumaymiyah; this site is imperative to Nusra and the FSA because of its proximity to the heights of Khan Al-Jouz.

The government is in the process of negotiating with PT Pindad regarding the purchase price of the armored vehicle called Badak.

He said once these vehicles are received, the government is planning to upgrade its weapons in the interest of state defense.

"We are still negotiating the price. We have agreed to buy 50 units in the first stage. The next stage will be upgrading of all weapons which are still in good condition," he said.

Turkish army enters Jarablus

user posted image

QUOTE
According to the ANHA reporters who obtained information from local sources, the Turkish force of military vehicles and heavy equipment accompanied a mine detection and removal device. After crossing the border, Turkish soldiers moved westwards within the Syrian territory.

Sources reported that ISIS gangs in the area were all unresponsive to the activity of Turkish soldiers, and just watched them as they moved.

According to another unconfirmed report, a Turkish troop of thousand soldiers has now been deployed on Syrian land close to the border.

U.S. Navy's 'Great Green Fleet' Uses 10-Percent Biodiesel Even As Fuel Prices Plummet

user posted image

QUOTE
Three years ago, the Navy won subsidies to help three companies build biofuel refineries to supply warships.
QUOTE
Since then, oil prices have dropped about 70 percent--but the Navy's "Great Green Fleet" is ready to sale.
QUOTE
the Great Green Fleet is an aircraft-carrier task group led by the nuclear-powered USS John C. Stennis, with escort ships fueled on a blend of 90 percent diesel and 10 percent biofuel.
QUOTE
The Department of Defense uses about 14 million gallons of fuel per day, with the Navy responsible for about a quarter of that, according to the Defense Logistics Agency.

IS controls several oil fields but it is believed that the air strikes have damaged revenues and the oil infrastructure that it relies upon. Last week, the coalition also bombed an IS bank where the group had been stashing millions of US dollars.
