since geneva convention say you cant attack hospital ship, then hospital ship shouldnt be able to attack you as well.

I think its the same excuse medics (not soldier trained in medical duties, different) have to be unarmed. The wearing of the red cross/crescent grants them protection under Geneva convetion, but the protection is invalid if the medic is found to be armed.

The convention is still valid in a conventional war between states, but COIN war against insurgents it probably doesn't apply (insurgents probably don't care anyway), so many medics nowadays are armed.

Pirates don't follow such restriction right? Many of of the medicines on board can fetch quite a price in black market and may attract pirates.

Wanna gain the wrath of the Navy? Probably you could try it, ONCE.

I don't think any sane pirate wanna tangle with a navy-affiliated ship, armed or not. laugh.gif

Also I think i't legal for the crew to have weapons for self-defense aboard:

QUOTE
ARTICLE 8 OF THE ADAPTATION OF THE GENEVA CONVENTION FOR MARITIME WARFARE

Hospital-ships and sick-wards of vessels arc no longer entitled to protection if they are employed for the purpose of injuring the enemy.

Neither the fact of the personnel of the said ships and sickwards being armed for maintaining order and for defending the sick and wounded. nor the presence of wireless telegraph apparatus on board, is a sufficient reason for withdrawing protection.

Why is this hospital ship armed?

Ok, I know this ship was originally a Makassar-class LPD, but I figured they'd remove all weaponry when they converted it into a hospital ship. hmm.gif

it not from Makassar class it from TNI-AL LPD Frosch Class, makassar class is from code 59X.

Frosch-class totally different looking. Also Frosch is an LST, not LPD.

You think they won't factor the longer build time and finance costs into the tender price charged to the govt? Its not new... other national defence industries also do it, and it contributes to high program costs and ultimately more expensive equipment for little reason other than to feed the industry.

Mainly the project have ceiling price.

Navy's strategic sealift vessel to be launched in Indonesia

By Alexis Romero (philstar.com) | Updated January 15, 2016 - 4:55pm

MANILA, Philippines - One of the two strategic sealift vessels acquired by the Philippines to boost the Navy’s capabilities will be launched on Sunday in Indonesia.

Launching is a Navy term that refers to the removal of a ship from dry dock to allow it to float at sea for the next stage of tests. A ship is launched to ensure that it is working properly before it is delivered to its buyer.

“We got a word from the Navy that one of the two strategic sealift vessels we ordered from Indonesia, from the PT PAL shipyard, will be launched this January 17. Our key officials will be in attendance to see the launching of that ship,” Armed Forces spokesman Col. Restituto Padilla said in a press briefing yesterday.

“The acquisition of the strategic sealift vessels is a very important milestone for our Navy. It will increase our capacity for humanitarian assistance and disaster response during critical moments when we our hit by storms,” he added.

In 2014, The STAR reported that shipbuilder PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) won the bidding for the purchase of two brand new strategic sealift vessels for the Philippine Navy. The notice of award for the P4-billion project was issued to the company in December 2014.

PT PAL offered to build the vessels for $86,980,000 or about P3.864 billion, well within the budget ceiling of P4 billion.

The first strategic sealift vessel will be delivered in May while the second ship is scheduled to arrive next year.

The strategic sealift vessels can be used to perform civil-military operations and can transport a large number of soldiers, logistics equipment and supplies. They can also accommodate three helicopters and can support disaster relief operations.

Padilla said the ship can also be deployed as a command and control center that can coordinate rescue, recovery and retrieval efforts.

“This ship can also be used as floating hospital in case our health center and hospitals in provinces that were affected by disasters become unavailable,” he said.

Padilla said the vessel can also be used as a supply ship in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) and other Philippine territories.

Two CH-53 Sea Stallion Helicopters Involved in Collision in Hawaii, 12 People Missing

user posted image

QUOTE
The U.S. Coast Guard says it has responded to a report of a military aircraft collision involving two helicopters off the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii, Chief Petite Officer Fara Mooers told ABC News.

Responders are searching for 12 people in a debris field 2 miles off the coast of Haleiwa. Each helicopter was carrying six people.

The Coast Guard received a call from the Marine Core Air Station, Kane’ohe Bay, at 11:38 p.m. local time Thursday requesting assistance.

Officials launched Coast Guard aircraft -- a MH65 helicopter and an HC130 Coast Guard airplane -- from Oahu.

The Coast Guard is searching the debris with assistance from a Navy helicopter crew and the Honolulu Fire Department with a helicopter and rescue boat on scene.

They have not located any personnel at this time and are continuing to search.

Syrian Army flanks the Islamists in southern Aleppo

user posted image

On Thursday morning in the Aleppo Governorate’s southern countryside, the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group), Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zinki woke up to find themselves flanked in Al-Rashiddeen, as the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division and their allies launched a massive assault on the northern and southern flanks of this strategic town.

The Syrian Arab Army’s 43rd Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division – backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the pro-government Palestinian militia “Liwaa Al-Quds” (Jerusalem Brigade) – began their assault on Thursday morning by striking the Islamist rebel defenses at the small village of Al-Hawsh (captured by Nusra the night before), killing several enemy combatants before advancing past Nusra’s first line of defense near Al-Rashiddeen.

In addition to striking Al-Hawsh on the outskirts of Khan Touman, the Syrian Armed Forces continued their military operations inside of Al-Rashiddeen’s 4th and 5th Precincts; these sites were flanked by the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division and their allies.

Al-Rashiddeen’s 4th and 5th Precincts are still under the control of the Islamist rebels; however, they are cutoff from their primary supply route that links them to the strategic town of Khan Al-Assal to the west.

The capture of Al-Rashiddeen and Khan Al-Assal would be devastating for the Islamist rebels in west Aleppo, as they would find themselves flanked once again.

War zone blasts may alter brain permanently: study

user posted image

QUOTE
US military members who are exposed to repeated blasts in a war zone may suffer permanent damage in parts of the brain that lend emotional stability, said a study Wednesday.

Researchers have described mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) -- more commonly called "concussion" -- as the "signature injury of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," said the report in the US journal Science Translational Medicine.

More than 250,000 US service members have been diagnosed with mTBI around the world, and post traumatic stress is a common accompaniment.

Indonesia & Denmark are in talks to co-produce unspecified naval vessels.

Indonesia and Denmark to pursue industry collaboration

Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Industry
14 January 2016

Indonesia and Denmark are discussing a potential defence industrial collaboration programme featuring the co-production of naval vessels and accompanying mission systems, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Jakarta has said.

According to an MoD statement on 13 January, defence industry officials from Denmark held meetings in Jakarta with counterparts from Indonesia, including defence minister Ryamizard Ryacudu.

The statement said the theme of the meetings was defence industry co-operation based on technology transfers to Indonesian industry. Products under consideration, it said, include unspecified naval vessels, radars, and other electronic systems to support naval operations.

The MoD quoted Denmark's ambassador to Indonesia, Casper Klynge, as saying, "This is more than buying and selling.
