Here’s One Idea How to Defend Ships From Ballistic Missiles

user posted image

QUOTE
The U.S. Navy has been in discussions with shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls about the possibility of building a missile defense variant of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock (LPD-17). The new vessel could eventually be equipped with new radars, railguns and lasers.
QUOTE
“You can put a lot of additional weight on the ship and you can put … some modern technologies like ballistic missile defense radars that are very heavy,”
QUOTE
Indeed, the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance suggests that a dedicated ballistic missile defense version of the LPD-17 could feature a 30-35 foot, multi-faced, S-band radar. Such a radar would provide much greater coverage than either the current SPY-1 radars found on current Aegis warships or the next generation Advanced Missile Defense Radar planned for DDG-51 Flight III destroyers.
QUOTE
If built, it would be the largest surface combatant built for the U.S. Navy since the Second World War.

A Coming Shift in Vietnamese Military Aviation?

user posted image

QUOTE
As several other writers have noted, the acquisition of Western aircraft (most likely the Gripen, Rafale, or Typhoon) would represent a huge shift in Vietnam’s defense trajectory. Vietnam hasn’t flown a Western warplane since the Vietnamese People’s Army overran Saigon, capturing 41 F-5 Tigers in the process. The Tigers that didn’t end up in the Soviet Union or the Eastern Bloc were soon grounded for lack of spares.
QUOTE
In this sense, Vietnamese interest in the Typhoon and its competitors is part and parcel with Hanoi’s other major diplomatic initiative, membership in the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP likely plays no small role in the willingness of Western states to contemplate selling their aircraft to Vietnam, including the potential for technology transfer. The TPP doesn’t mean that Western technology is suddenly secure in Vietnam, but it does imply a strong directionality to Hanoi’s economic policy. It also suggest that Vietnam is extremely serious about maintaining an adversarial posture towards China for the foreseeable future.

Burkina Faso hostage crisis: 20 dead at hotel & cafe; counter-assault begins; Al Qaeda claims attack

user posted image

QUOTE
Terrorist group Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to SITE Intelligence Group.

The attackers broke into a restaurant of one of the biggest hotels in the capital of Burkina Faso, and are now entrenched and the clashes are continuing with the enemies of the religion, AP cites a message posted in Arabic on the militants' “Muslim Africa'” Telegram account as saying.

Some 100-150 people are believed to have been in the hotel and restaurant at the time of the attack, according to witnesses speaking to media.

Two groups of security forces, reportedly local law enforcement and French special service personnel,  are taking part in the assault to neutralize the terrorists inside the hotel. Both groups entered the hotel through lobby partly set on fire.

More rescued hostages are being walked out of the Splendid hotel amid continuing gunfire. The walls of the hotel have been blackened by fire.

Footage Of U.S. Strike On ISIS Cash Facility Looks Like Scrooge McDuck's Vault Exploded

user posted image

QUOTE
The facility, which was not the first of its kind the coalition has destroyed, was used as a sort of ISIS money supply depot where funds were drawn from to pay fighters and to support other ISIS needs in the sacked city. Apparently, the coalition’s targeting folks have known about this facility for some time, but due to strict rules of engagement and its urban location, there was a effort over many days to survey it from the air, and strike when there would be minimum casualties. This is similar to the targeting process we have seen in the past when it came to other strategic ISIS facilities.
QUOTE
ISIS makes its money from plundering cities, black-market oil revenues, ransoms, donations from wealthy Sunni Arabs, the black market sale of antiquities, and taxes among other smaller rackets.

This A-10 Thunderbolt II Being Aerial Refueled Looks Like a Bad Ass Flying Shark MachinE

Here’s a photo of a US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker refueling an A-10 Thunderbolt II over the clouds. The perfect angle of the picture and the lovely nose art of the aircraft makes the fighter jet look like a flying shark machine that has a machine gun as its mouth and scars on its battered nose. It’s such a cool angle of this apex predator of the sky

Tomahawk Missiles Will Get Twice As Deadly By Blowing Up Their Own Fuel

user posted image

QUOTE
This new tweak could improve the Tomahawk's striking power through the power of what you might call extreme mixology. It's all about fuel-air explosions.
QUOTE
For example, when an Exocet missile hit the British destroyer HMS Sheffield during the 1982 Falklands War, the explosive warhead did not go off , but burning rocket propellant started fires that destroyed the ship anyway
QUOTE
However, creating such an explosion would mean turning all the fuel into a vapor cloud and detonating it efficiently. And therein lies the trick.
QUOTE
The Russians, in particular, have a range of "thermobaric" fuel-air weapons that make ferocious blasts
QUOTE
expert in the field of non-shock initiation of explosions, is developing a system that will implode a missile's fuel tank to generate a cloud of vapor and ignite it in a rapidly burning fireball.
QUOTE
The same technology would also enable a new generation of small, liquid-fueled missiles or jet-powered attack drones with a powerful punch.
QUOTE
unarmed scout drones fitted with a fuel-air device could be used as missiles if they encountered a high-value target.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, JAN.15, 2016

An agreement for deployment of a Russian air group in Syria signed on August 26, 2015, has no validity period according to its text published on Jan.14. The treaty specifies that the Syrian party makes available the Hmeimim airbase in Latakia province, and also “necessary additional territory as agreed upon by the parties.” The Hmeimim airbase and its infrastructure are used by Russia free of charge.

The Russian Aerospace Forces conducted a joint combat mission on destruction of terrorists’ infrastructure with the Syrian Air Force for the first time.

Syrian MiG-29 fighters met the Russian Su-25 attack aircraft, which had taken off from the Hmeymim airbase, and provided escort and protection to the Russian aircraft throughout their flight to the attack point and on their way back. Earlier, Syrian pilots visited the Hmeymim airbase, where they improved cooperation with the Russian pilots and familiarized themselves with radio communication rules.

Separately, the Syrian Arab Air Force targeted the militants’ positions at al-Sukari, al-Zabadieh, Hayan, Beyanon, al-Tamoura, Ratian and Ma’arseta al-Khan.

On January 14th, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) liberated the villages of Surayb, Ajouziyah,‘Abboudiyah, and Miltafah in the Aleppo province. The Kurdish-majority town of Tell Aran was also liberated by the SAA. The pro-government forces are now advancing towards the town of al-Bab located about 30 kilometers from the Turkish border. The town is a bastion of ISIS in the area.

According to the reports, a huge convoy of militants arrived the Latakia province to support the militants operations aimed to recapture the strategic town of Salma and its surrounding territory. The first militants’ aim is to seize the villages around the town. Then they will be able to launch an offensive to recapture Salma. If militants fail, they will likely lose the entire northeastern countryside of the Latakia Governorate to the Syrian forces in the nearest future.

Tiger Forces capture the village of Rasm Al-Sirhan in east Aleppo

user posted image

The Syrian Arab Army’s special operations division known as the “Tiger Forces” has continued their massive advance through the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern countryside, capturing more sites from the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) inside the Al-Bab Plateau.

Earlier today, the Tiger Forces – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF), Liwaa Suqour Al-Sahra (Desert Hawks Brigade), and Kataebat Al-Ba’ath (Al-Ba’ath Battalions) – imposed full control over the village of Rasm Al-Sirhan after a violent battle with the ISIS terrorists entrenched around this desolate area in the Aleppo Governorate.

According to a military source near the Kuweires Military Airport, the Tiger Forces and their allies had advanced to the village of Rasm Al-Sirhan after their successful campaign the day before in which they captured 4 villages from the ISIS terrorists situated to the south of Al-Bab city.

With the capture of Rasm Al-Sirhan today, the Tiger Forces and their allies have expanded their control over a large part of Al-Bab city’s southern flank; this will prove vital in the coming week as they target the town of ‘Aran, which is also situated to the south of Al-Bab.

Currently, violent firefights are taking place at the village of ‘Ayn Al-Jahesh and to the east of Rasm Al-Sirhan; it is very likely that the Tiger Forces continue to advance east of Al-Bab city in order to expand their territorial gains.

Rebels on the brink of losing southern Hama

user posted image

The Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group), Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) were able to hold onto the northern border of Al-Rastan Lake for nearly three years without ever conceding this important part of the Hama-Homs axis to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies.

However, this officially changed on Friday evening, when the Syrian Arab Army’s 47th Brigade of the 11th Tank Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) – seized one of the last villages on the northern border of Al-Rastan Lake, marking the bitter end to the Islamists three year long resistance in the Hama Governorate’s southern countryside.

The Syrian Arab Army’s 47th Brigade and their allies imposed full control over the village of Jarisah in southern Hama after a violent firefight with the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham on Friday morning.

In fact, the capture of Jarisah by the Syrian Armed Forces came just two hours after they seized the village of Deir Furdays; this aforementioned site is also located in the Hama Governorate’s southern countryside, but it does not border Al-Rastan Lake

With the capture of Jarisah, the Syrian Armed Forces have now taken control of all but one village on the northern border of Al-Rastan Lake.

Two days ago, the Syrian Armed Forces pulled out of Harbinafsah after seizing it 24 hours prior to their withdrawal; however, they have once again positioned themselves at the northern flank of the village in preparation for the final assault.

Thousands of fresh Syrian Army recruits sent to Aleppo

user posted image

The Syrian Arab Army’s “Tiger Forces” (Qawat Al-Nimr) and their allies are on the move in the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern countryside, capturing several villages that were once under the control of the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) inside the Al-Bab Plateau and the Deir Hafer Plains.

With the amount of territory the Tiger Forces and their allies have captured inside the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern countryside in the last three months; it would require a substantial amount of military personnel to protect the roads and villages in order for the Syrian Arab Army to progress further along the ISIS frontier.

According to a senior officer from the Syrian Arab Army in Damascus, a fresh batch of recruits that just graduated from training camp in the Qalamoun Mountains (Al-Nabk and Dayr Attiyah) have been deployed to this front in order to fulfill the army’s recent manpower quota.

The source further added that the aggregated number of military personnel is in the thousands.

Most of these conscripted soldiers hail from the Syrian capital of Damascus, as well as the Syrian provinces of Al-Quneitra, Al-Sweida, and Homs.

The arrival of these reinforcements should free up several soldiers from the Tiger Forces and Liwaa Suqour Al-Sahra (Desert Hawks Brigade) that are currently tasked with protecting the captured villages.

The US is considering a new plan for Syria — and the Kurds ‘will not be happy about it’

user posted image

The Pentagon is weighing a new request from Turkey to train and equip Arab rebels battling government forces in northern Syria
QUOTE
It is also an attempt to appease Turkey, which has expressed concern to Washington that the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG)
QUOTE
US-backed Arab rebel brigade aimed at enabling larger groups of Arab forces fighting in Syria would presumably serve as a counterweight to Kurdish territorial ambitions in the north
QUOTE
“Whether the YPG will actually listen to the US is a different story. But the US is effectively telling the YPG to observe Turkey’s red line,”
QUOTE
“Most likely the Turkish plan is to insert these forces into the Azaz border strip and to prevent YPG expansion into these areas in the future,”

QUOTE
"Turkey wants to prevent Kurdish expansion and stop them from linking the Kurdish administrations in Afrin and Kobani.”

Turkey is already beginning to worry about the “nightmare scenario” of Russia supporting the Kurds in Syria and facilitating their expansion westward

Russia was delivering weapons and heavy armor to the YPG while instructing them to attack opposition groups, many of whom are backed by Turkey.

GAM Militants Didn’t Fight For Sharia Law

user posted image

QUOTE
The quiet outskirts of Banda Aceh, the capital of a province once known as Indonesia’s bloodiest, hid a history of violent revolution and counterrevolution.
QUOTE
Hasan di Tiro founded the Free Aceh Movement, or GAM, in 1976 along separatist and secularist lines. GAM fighters trained in Libya and attacked Indonesian soldiers, who, in turn, killed thousands of militants and sympathizers, including civilians. Around 20,000 people died in the war.
QUOTE
The Indonesian government settled on autonomy for Aceh, but added a bizarre idea. Local sharia bylaws would govern Aceh together with the country’s national criminal laws.
QUOTE
This idea sounded strange because GAM, a secular paramilitary group, had asked for independence rather than sharia.
QUOTE
“None of us wanted sharia,” said Shadia Marhaban, a former GAM member who wanted Aceh to return to secularism.
QUOTE
“Their main targets are women not wearing headscarves, people gambling or drinking alcohol, and couples having sex out of wedlock,”
QUOTE
Some former GAM members allege the Indonesian government recognized sharia law as an attempt to divide Aceh
QUOTE
But neither the revolution nor the counterrevolution had won Aceh, where the conflict continued off the battlefield.
