Hi all, I'm looking into buying a folding bike for leisure riding. I've been eyeing on the dahon models but unfortunately there isn't any sold in Sabah.
I went to a few shops and they only had:
TRS buddy system
BTWin Hoptown320
I see that usjcycles sells Dahon SUV and offers shipping service.

Any advice for someone with a budget of around 1k?

Call Kimbell Jaya, ask for Jimmy. He can send the bike to Sabah if you want. Anyway, the price difference can get the courier charges free. 012 2927636. Call him to see what's in stock. Almost all brands available.

Thanks for the advice!
Contacted him today and he listed out a lot at that price range:

Geometric windspeed 8speed
HTG alloy sport rim with disc brake
Amis FAC 2.1
Java TT
Speed gear aries
Dahon SUV

Now being the beginner that I am, I have no idea which one I should opt for, especially since I don't get to check the bikes out.

Also, my concerns I have for buying online is the after sales service. For example, am I able to do maintenance on my own? Do I need to buy any spare parts? as I haven't owned a bike before.

Thanks haha! Guess I'm thinking too much as if it were a car.
I've been only riding free rental bikes before so I hadn't had to worry about these things.
Right now I'm leaning towards the Dahon suv and probably Java TT.

i would recommend Amis or Trinx. I owned a trinx, so far nvr fail me, really a value buy.

For others, i think they are 7/8/9 speeds, will be suffer if u r riding for tour or when climbing hill. if you are riding around town, sure 7/8/9 is enough.

Appreciate all the help!

After reading around, I've decided that a simpler bike would be more suited for me as a beginner as there will be less things to take care of. Also they're cheaper biggrin.gif

I also realized that I've been riding on a single speed before this and had no problems, so any bike listed should be an upgrade. I'm not in a rush.

I really like the design of the dahon although it's on the heavy side.
Before I get the bike, should I also consider any accessories to go with it? Is there any special care for the steel frame to prevent rusting?

Greetings from Brunei,

Been looking to get into cycling to lose weight but needed something that can fit in the trunk of my car. Installing racks is not an option so looked at some of the folding bikes on offer.

I'm 130kg so I was skeptical that these bikes could hold my weight. The sales people i spoke to said folding bikes can handle the weight but they also suggested something more robust, usually 29" MTBs.

But my wife encouraged me to get it and I finally decided to pull the trigger. Tried out the Raleigh Visage at the shop and it seemed to handle my weight well. I also loved the style and colour.

I've had a few rides with it now, all around 10km. The last time I rode a bike was more than 15 years ago and I had forgotten just how fun it is.

The bike is holding up well. The tyres have not popped and the rims are still round (a good sign). The seat was a bit uncomfortable so I've put on a cushion and the handles came with rubberised grip with hurts the palm. I've now wrapped it with badminton grips I had lying around and it feels much better.

My aim now is to ride to work (20km) once I've built enough confidence but that might take a while as Brunei is not as bike friendly as other countries.

Can anyone recommend a bottle holder that fits folding bikes... And what do I need to know about maintaining and riding such bikes.

Thanks for any information provided biggrin.gif

Hi guys. Used to be quite involved in riding road bikes about 10 years ago. Have not touched a bike since. Looking at getting a foldie now to tinker around and ride casually with the young family. Based in Australia currently. Cheapest value for money foldie I seem to be able to find is the dahon mu n360 at aud940 and the dahon jetstream p8 at Aud889. Any ideas on how these rate? Are these value for money buys or am I better off buying in Malaysia and bringing back to Aus? Open to suggestions?

Or should I save money and get one from here http://www.cellbikes.com.au/brands/Dahon-Folding-Bikes

any normal bottle holder can use already, all same the mounting bolt holes.

maintain bike, very easy, just keep it clean, put some lube one the moving parts ( not on seat post ya biggrin.gif )

if chain becomes very dirty ( after certain KM ) then u use degrease to clean n brush it, put lube again...
