This is a 24 inch folding model. Sometimes it is hard to get the tires and tubes. Also I sometimes thinks...............might as well get non folding bikes if we go for either 26 or 24 inch wheels. After all , it is not saving much space. I can fit 2 mountain bikes into my car with 2 passengers.  For the price, I can get better mountain bikes than folding bikes, espevially the second hand market.

Wow! over 6 footer ! blink.gif Wish I had your height. Imagine the cheap mountain bike frames I can buy. Large size used frames has not many buyers tongue.gif

The Raleigh is a good strong bike. 8 speed as well. The price is OK, usually difference between cheap and more is not much. Quite standardized. It's a good start.

tongue.gif Hahahaa. Told you so. Usually you will get something else. Lucky you didn't get the Mongoose. The frame is not suited to riders above 6 feet. There's a weak point in the frame design. The frame design actually follows the design of the KHS T20. The KHS is chromoly which is stronger and more flexible but they used the design for aluminum which makes the seat tube weak !

The same frame is actually used in Buffalo, Dema, Amis and many more, some with the rubber buffer and some just welded fixed at the seat stays. What happens to high rider is, usually, for high rider, the seatpost is pulled high and the seat post is not supporting the strength of the seat tube. So, when the bike in motion bumps and flexes, the welded joint of the seat stays and seat tube cracks if going over bumps too hard. Aluminum being a very rigid metal, they don't flex but breaks. Most likely cheaper bikes don't go through heat treatment to strengthen the frame , thus without the seat post acting as another butted layer in the seat tube (as the seat post is too high for tall riders) , the weak point cracks. Many cases already but hush hush ! mega_shok.gif

Moongoose has shorten the seat tube and eliminate the flex at the rear by discarding the rear absorber joint and Amis has added a higher brace between the top tube and seat tube. Then again, for tall riders, just skip this design, even the KHS, just to be sure.

Thanks for sharing, I should go for ads I believe,
Have to recompile my budget limit x.x

I will aim for on the road biking with you all in near future, Will choose for a standard bike so wouldn't spend again to upgrade in short period. As he not advise me to pick up mongoose if I target to upgrade in future, might consider the trink brand as the store Will be available after raya

Hi All,

Looking for some quick answers about 451 wheelsets
1. are all hubs the same 24spoke / 26spoke, just the wheel diameter difference?
2. is it worth the effort to get a custom wheelset since its just a 20" wheel vs cincai get a off-shelf wheelset
3. When they say double-walled aluminium, can u tell by just looking?
4. high profile - yes / no

many thanks sifu-sifu

1) 451 means the rim seat diameter, nothing to do with spoke number, tire width, tire type or hub size.
2) There are no correct answer to that. I will buy cincai 50buck custom becha wheels, sifu attigge will go for top of the range carbon, aero profile, ceramic bearing with 10mg weight (still off the shelf)
3) only when you remove the tire.
4) how fast are you going? 35km/h? and how syok you will get…

It's all about you, just buy what you want and happy to pay. It's your money wink.gif
or you can wait till you made up your mind smile.gif

Good call! So glad you skip Mongoose, really not for tall ppl like us. I am a bit shorter, only 186cm.
XDS frames are well built, should give you a few years of good abuse. or at least till you know what you need for a bike.

Hi All,

Looking for some quick answers about 451 wheelsets
1. are all hubs the same 24spoke / 26spoke, just the wheel diameter difference?
Yes hubs are quite standard to all bikes except for certain criteria like number of holes for corresponding spokes. There's no 26 spokes, I think you got wheel diameter wronged with the number of spokes. The diameter is the size...eg. 20 inch for folding bikes 26, 27.5 or 29 for mountain bikes. Roadbikes class their diameter as 700C which is actually just slightly less than 29 inch. Hubs also have or don't have bolt on treads for brake disc rotors.

Since this is the folding bike tread, I will say about folding bike hubs, they are usually 24 for rear and 20 for front (meaning spokes ya ! ) but it has become cheaper for manufacturers nowadays to just slap 32 spokes as they can get cheaper from mountain bike run offs! Dahon and Terns front hubs are narrower, only 74mm width while the rest are the same as mtb , 100mm. Rear are quite standard either 135mm or 130 mm wide. Can be used on either sizes anyway.

2. is it worth the effort to get a custom wheelset since its just a 20" wheel vs cincai get a off-shelf wheelset
It all depends on you. To be frank, the wheelset is the most important component on a bike that affects performance. The lighter it is, the easier it is to pedal and also the quality of the bearings and the tolerances of the engineering in the bearing system. To custom built a wheelset or 'cincai' as you said also depends and the best gauge is off course the price. Like they say, " good things are expensive and there are no cheap good things ".  Ever noticed when going downhill, you see some riders just coast down the hill without pedaling while you see some still need to pedal. That's the wheelset at work.

3. When they say double-walled aluminium, can u tell by just looking?
Usually YES !  Single wall rims are usually wider as they need more metal to be strong. Look at those 'ah soh' bicycles and then look at the foldie's rim which are narrower with higher profile. That's the difference. Double walled has another rim inside the rim for stronger built.

4. high profile - yes / no
I don't actually see the need for high profile rims in folding bikes but hey ! Some want 'gaya' and some who are really fast riders, they might shave a few secs off! After all, they are not that expensive already.

many thanks sifu-sifu

If you want my frank opinion, For XDS , I rather go for a Trinx as both are what I call third level brands. Premium, Good and then third and then , off course there are lower. Even Raleigh where I categorized in the same level is better than the XDS. Brands like XDS, Exitway and Dema are factory borne brands. Meaning they are initially manufacturers for other main brands and then started to get into the fray themselves. Usually they can't compete with branded ones as branded ones, sometimes manufactured by them wants a full QC on the frames. So, where do these rejected frames go ? Same way as Dahon and FnHon. They are still usable off course as we Malaysian don't really thrashed their bikes.

Reason for Trinx is, they give better components at a lower selling price compared to XDS. At times I see about 300 bucks difference for the same spec. No, actually XDS is not famous for mountain biking, more of a normal bike actually. Wait for the Trinx, if you cannot wait, go Kimbell Jaya in Cheras Perdana. Jimmy should have stock there. Also Raleigh is also in stock there.

Not on my folding bikes and not even on my mountain bike. I am 102 kgs and I don't take the risk. Also I don't have any ceramic bearings in my stable as well, I can't afford. Remember, we buy only when we can afford.

It depends on which position you feel comfortable in. Some rides upright, some wants to be sportier and hunch their backs with their heads below their shoulders (make sure you use roadbike helmets for this position, without the sunshade, else youare going to get STIFF neck ). But I suggest you take the middle stand. Not too high like a monkey bar and not too low like a road bike. Just comfortable for riding.

Hi Sigu etigge, what are the brands for premium and good? Just want to know which one is worth to spend money on. Thanks

Premium brands are more like parlour bikes....status symbols. There are not necessary suitable, good quality, that's off course ! I mean there are expensive but adaptability and suitability, that's another question. These are like Bromptons, Birdys, Alex Moultons, Bike Fridays............ The good brands .....meaning quality and well researched ones for functionalities are Dahons, which actually the pioneer in folding bikes. Then his son Joshua branch out to start Tern because of difference in idealogy and policies. Under this group are KHS, Oribikes, Flamingoes and also Giant, Oyama and a few big manufacturers for normal bikes which saw the growing popularity of folding bikes and joined the fray. Then you have other China made ones which are cheaply manufactured because mostly they are contractors for the above brands. Brands like Trinx, XDS, Oscar, Twitter, Totem , Garion are all cheaper because they just buy off frames, ready made from China and market under their own brand. That's why they are not well researched or some probably check if designs are patented and if not, they also order and market under their own brand. Look at XDS which have a similar model to Java.

The most popular model for folding bikes is the dolphin design where Dahon, Tern, Garion and every brands regardless cheap of branded has a model. Look carefully and you will see Dahon's fold is exclusive to them only as they are patented. I have to admit though, their folding mechanism are the best and their folding design are also the best. I used to carry 3 folding bikes and 3 riders comfortably with Dahons in one car, a Boardwalk and 2 Dahon Speeds. I can only managed to fit in only one in the boot when I changed to Giant. And also I have to be careful with the handle post and folding joint area as the Giant, even a branded manufacturer can't make them as secure as Dahons and Terns.

That said about branding, you must also understand that bicycle components are all standard regardless of brands. It is only the level components that one brand choose over the other or in most cases, which components are factory excess and overuns that they can grab cheaply off component manufacturers. If you find a cheap frame, strong and the geometry suitable to your body anatomy and you fit in the best components there is, it might actually be a better ride than you buy a premium bike with mediocre components. That's why I always emphasize on a good frame to start with. Once you are over that, anything else can be improved, even getting your folding bike sub 10 kilograms.

That's why I always stress to newbies to get Dahons or Terns. That's because of the frame, fork and handle post. Other components can be modified in the near future , be it one month, one year or three years. Most riders goes for the best specs rather than the best frame. Eg. the components on my wife's mini velo, the Shimano Ultegra and the Speedmax wheelset has been through 3 bikes already. Whatever frame or rather bike she changes, the old components are shifted over the new bike. You don't lose anything and also the new components of the new bike is shifted to the old bike frame and easily sold off, as the components are new. It doesn't matter how long for you to complete collecting a groupset or wheelset that you like, eventually you will get it and then they are permanent. To spend 6 to 7 K in one shot is hard to spend on a bicycle but if you spend 2,5K on a good brand and frame initially, it is easier. Although 7 or 8 speed, you can start off and gauge how much you want to attain and how much to spend later on. Even if you spend another 3 or 4 K in a span of 1 or 2 years to upgrade, it doesn't matter, you are still riding. I mean 3K to 4K in two years, even if we don't spend on bikes, we will spend on others like food, tours etc.

It's only a few thousands and you may stop cycling after 2 circle around your house. Go for it!!
Do double your budget, there are a whole myriad of cycling attire you will need to buy. old saying, Gaya Mesti Mau. I know a few ppl whom budget for 10k bike annually.
