I've read quite a bit on people customizing their resumes and sending out as many job applications as possible, but very little on networking, volunteering etc. to expand your chances of actually getting a job.

Anyone?

Networking and volunteering are pretty important in the resume. This is true esp for smaller companies. Think if you are able to refer to the person's actual name rather than hiring manager, or even direct to the managers inbox rather than generic HR inbox.

Always make an impact and never forget to leave your name card with the person. Though the above is not true if you have a specific and niche skill that is sought after.

I'm not saying that it's not an important part of the resume, I'm just asking what people are doing to network and get recognized, rather than randomly shooting out resumes to every email address and HR department out there.

For me for example, I would lean on my college alumni list (if you have a well established one), join several professional meetings (meetup, conferences etc) just to know people. My wife volunteered at the local park and got to know lots of people just from there. A close friend got hired this way within 3 weeks of landing in Sydney for example.

I just don't see networking being discussed much here, just how to blast out your resumes and hope for a job.

Networking is key. Speaking frm experience, a lot of business associations have members who have job openings or know of ppl who have job openings.
These jobs are not advertised in the normal channels as well ('hidden' job market)

I would encourage newcomers to join as many associations as he/she can and to attend functions and make themselves known. One needs to practice selling him/herself at these functions and make an impression.

Blasting CVs out is pointless. If a recruiter receives hundreds of applications for a role, what will make yr CV go up to the top of the list?

I was told, the moment the case officer contacts you, you're already in the pool.
Just quickly provide what the CO asks for and that should be it.

Good luck, tell me when u have good news!

if you have already submitted your EOI, higher points just means you might be invited faster

you'll get it via email, or you can check skill select also if you want, it will come the same time

ahhh thanks!... btw there is this subsequent entrant for 489... so if during EOI i said no, and if i want to add someone in later after getting 489 is it still possible even though when submitting EOI i said selected no when they ask if there's any partner or family member that will be tagging along under my application?

better email them, cos when you accept the EOI, you need to pay first so that you can apply for the visa...

and visa fees depends on how many dependents you have

alright! Thanks...

btw, am a fresh grad, and really contemplating on how soon should I go over to aussie IF (a very big IF) my visa is approved...? should i work here first for a while maybe 1-2 years then only head over? or should I just head over straight and start looking for job? or should I just keep applying for jobs in aussie while working here? I know job market is bad in aussie especially for us, not much job opportunity, and in order to manage expectations, I don't really mind any job actually... even if it is unrelated to what I have studied but of course, preferably related.

just some background, graduated from monash university (few months back), majoring in accounting, banking and finance and currently pursuing both my cpa (completed 1st paper) and cfa (level 1 candidate).

Is there any considerations of starting your career in Singapore first before considering the move elsewhere? Banking is not really a big thing in Australia comparing to Singapore and Hong Kong.

Also, with regards to any jobs not related to your field, that's what a lot of people say but after a year, that thinking changes. Be very careful and be clear with what you want to achieve in Australia. To be rich? This is not the place. For the kids, then you are getting somewhere.

Just my two cents worth.

Australian asset management is pretty decent though. Probably because theres tonnes of super funds around to feed the asset managers

Very difficult to get a graduate job in Australia. Bascially, you would be fighting with the locals for a crummy entrance job. But you could try, you never know your luck, especially since you have started on CPA and CFA.
