I bought some MQREIT shares today. I now have 12 stocks already.
Sifus, may I know how many different stocks should we have in our portfolio? Some books say 10, some books say can be up to 20. Some say it is the value of the stocks that matter, not the number of different stocks you have. BTW, what is the difference between this thread and the Stock Market Discussion thread? Isn't it an overlap? |

Hold what you're comfortable of holding. There's no 1 right answer, because everyone have different capital, different risk exposure, different mindset. But at last, I don't have the balls to do it. Otherwise I sai lang Pestech, Press Metal, Classic Scenic, Ta Ann, Protasco, Inari Amertron, etc. So I am sticking with so called "blue chip" stocks for now. Let me learn how to crawl first before I walk and then I will run. This post has been edited by Vanguard 2015: Feb 17 2017, 06:17 PM |

Less than 3 stocks is better. It forces you to think real good about what to buy. Buying a bunch? Lol. Tikam party ah? |

Got to catch them all. Playing stocks is exactly like fighting a war. Which begs the simple and silly question... Would you fight a battle without any preparation? Do you think it's go to just fight and hope to learn as you fight? What if you don't survive the fight? I've seen many lose more than their money in the market. |

Do try this yourself .... play only 3 stocks. one good thing that will come out of this is..... you will force yourself to wait patiently for the correct stock. * i know it helped me * sometimes I even do just one. |

Thank you everyone for your invaluable input. I think I will just 'invest' and 'trade' to the best of my limited ability. But I do follow certain rules of investment:-
1. Having an emergency fund of at least 6 months 2. Not playing margin or doing contra trading 3. Only invest with money that I don't need for the next 5 years or more 4. Prepared to see my stocks lose 20% or more or its value in a market correction I think I will follow foofoosasa's 'advice' and hentam some growth stocks. 😃 |

What i like about it is that it has enabled me to focus really well. I don't simply take any chances now. It's either i think the stock is really look and I can make tons of money from it or i just say no.... win big or stay home la. So far...the results has been truly outstanding for me. Try? Ps. Look at your many stocks.... Sometimes ...err...you see those coma ones....err....you got ask....why bother? |

Only you know your own risk appetite, you can slowly find it out yourself. IMHO you might be holding too much counters for a starter. |

QUOTE(Smurfs @ Feb 17 2017, 07:07 PM) I would say that depends on a lot of factors. Let's ask yourself what is your risk appetite? Let's say u have 10k, would u dump all in risky fund? I hope No. How many percent would u put in low risk and how many put in high risk. Then only u hunt your stock. Make a target to get the lowest price u expecting. Do more study. Lets take one example, capital. if one only have 5k as his initial capital, i dont think of any advantages of splitting 5k into 8 stocks. If can I also dun1 to rugi and cry out here. Do more study. Like the legendary said on rule on investing, Rule 1 : Never lost money. Rule 2 : Never forget rule 1. Let the positive motivation motivates u rather than negative motivation kick u. Haha. |
