Yes in order to read oil temp you need to install aftermarket gauge and adapter plate. OBD2 will get oil temp reading only if the car got oil temp sensor already. Could you have mistakenly referred to water temp instead?

Here's how I wired up my oil temp gauge very factory fitted look. being a picky person, I don't want to have a gauge sticking out of the dash like a sore thumb. It will make the dash looks very weird and not tidy looking.
