Prefer FREMM,
ya about $100m, if we construct 3-4 ship, cost still acceptable.

rather go for PAAMS with integrated SMART-L

closely similar to type 45
*
Gowind is too small to fit in SMART-L,
the size radar is huge for 3000 tons frigate, at lease 6000 tons level.
also power requirement is huge.
also SMART-L going to un-popular it will be replace with newest 4 fix panel AESA radar.
Thales I-Mast is best for 3000 tons level balancing size and capability.

Thats pre-songlap price. Gowind already RM1.6bn each how much do you think this will 'cost'?

Wasn't Aster 15 and ESSM already turned down in favour of MICA VL?

ROC Air Force AT-3 trainer plane missing in central Taiwan during training flight

user posted image

QUOTE
Taipei, Sept. 22 (CNA) The military was continuing a search for two missing pilots Tuesday after their AT-3 Air Force Academy training aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers earlier that day during a routine training flight.

The Huadong Defense Command said that a total of 60 servicemen would soon reach the area near the location where the aircraft was last seen on radar screens to search for them.

In addition to the ground search effort, the Air Force also deployed an EC225 rescue helicopter and an S-70C rescue chopper to search for the missing pilots and the aircraft, but as of press time, the search had proved unsuccessful.

Due to heavy cloud, the helicopters could not be flown at a low enough altitude to conduct search and rescue work, officials from the Air Force's Chiayi base said, adding that the helicopters had been recalled to the base.

The Air Force was expected to dispatch another S-70C the following morning to continue with the search effort, the officials said.

well technically not that expensive, bcos Integrated Mast already include all Radarr, comms, sensor, electronic EOD, into a mast, it speed up installation on ship, no need each item install, cost just 10-20% higher on all item buy individually , but it also simplify maintenance later, all maintenance can be done inside mast in any time. cost about $50m each set, but can shorted ship construction+outfit 1 year time (also saving cost). I-Mast pre-construction in factory and ship to shipyard plug and play install. and it is complete all-in-one system for all radar/sensor/comms. much better perform than single unit.
As many discuss on early thread, Gowind Smart-S 3D radar only support ESSM and VL MIca, not support Aster missile. And RMN specify LCS-Gowind ship as ASW role, so anti-air capability just basic, so just accept with MICA-VL。just like France spec Fremm, as ASW role just with Aster 15 SAM, not include Aster 30 in ship.
also for Gowind, price tag is include about 20% TOT/IP cost and shipyard upgrade.

Integrated Mast is new generation combine sensor/comms/system all-in-one for new generation navy ship.
newer navy ship start adopt to use this kind concept. like FREMM-EL, Type 26, F125, Holland class. DDG1000. JSS

also Thales I-Mast 400/500 much better than Herakles with dual 4 fix panel AESA radar. and advantage of integration.

Try the Crushing Power of Russian Su-30SM’s Gun!

QUOTE
The 30mm GSh-30-1 automatic cannon is a part of the armament of such Russian combat aircraft as MiG-29, Su-27, Su-33, Su-34, PAK FA and others. Its rate of fire can reach 1,800 rounds per minute. The cannon can strike air, water and ground targets with armor-piercing high-explosive incendiary and armor-piercing tracer ammunition.
The Su-30SM is a supermaneuverable multirole fighter designed to gain supremacy in the air. It is an heir to the legendary Su-27.

Germany's Got a 4-Barrel Laser Gatling Gun

user posted image

Drones are becoming a big problem for armed forces worldwide. They're small, difficult to detect, and operated by armies and terrorist groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

The drone threat isn't just limited to the Middle East: in 2014, South Korean authorities found North Korean drones had overflown the Blue House—the official residence of South Korean President Park Geun-hye.

This week at the Defence and Security Equipment Industry in London, German defense contractor Rheinmetall Defence Electronics showcased a new sea-based anti-drone laser system. The system, according to Chinese web site qq.com, features not one but four high energy lasers (HEL) mounted on turret, making it look like some kind of laser gatling gun.

The principles behind the laser gatling aren't exactly the same as a regular, bullet-spitting gatling gun. The four 20 kilowatt HELs are designed to be fired simultaneously, in a technique known as superimposition. All four fire at a target at once, and Rheinmetall's technology combines them into a single powerful 80 kilowatt beam.

According to the company, using superimposition there's not limit to the amount of energy that can be focused on a target—just add more lasers.

Each HEL's ruby-red lens is protected from the elements by a cover that swings open moments before firing. Such protection is essential to prevent "blooming", a process by which fog, mist and other airborne water droplets cause lasers to defocus and rapidly lose power.

The gatling laser can reportedly shoot down a drone at 500 meters. Lasers can also detonate ammunition, explode artillery shells, blind the sensors of another ship, and even burn holes in smaller ships., The real range of the system is also likely much longer: in tests Rheinmetall's 30 measly kilowatt laser exploded an 82-millimeter mortar in midair at 1,000 meters. The result will be ships protected from a variety of threats—at the speed of light.

To give you an idea of what a laser weapon is capable of, here's a video of Rheinmetall's land-based system:

DRS Technologies providing new soldier vision system

user posted image

ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- DRS Technologies Inc. is to provide the U.S. Army with a new technology that integrates night vision goggles with thermal weapon sights.

Work on the next-generation system will be performed under an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract worth as much as $367 million, DRS said.

"DRS has a long history of providing the U.S. military with leading thermal weapon sight and night vision technology and we look forward to providing this important future capability to ensure our warfighters remain the best equipped in the world," said Shawn Black, vice president and general manager of Infrared Sensors and Systems at DRS Technologies.

"These devices are a result of years of DRS-led innovation and development through U.S. Army and DRS investment. The result is a device that affordably and significantly improves the ability of troops to see and engage targets more rapidly in degraded combat conditions."

The new system is based on the company's Enhanced Night Vision Goggle III and Family of Weapon Sight (Individual) programs. Connected through a wireless system, the weapon-mounted thermal sight is designed to transmit imagery to the night vision goggle, allowing troops to stay protected while raising their weapon over an obstacle or around a corner, without exposing themselves to enemy fire.

yes, the results from TOT/IP is train many ship designer and engineering, we should start built small vessel patrol boat first.
so Gov should BNS ask propose design 500 tons patrol ship to replace our Perdana, handaanl, Jerung Kris gun boat (about 16 unit, 40 year old ship), those ship design as patrol boat with cheaper cost and low level weapon to built, like usd 40-50m per-ship, basic surface radar+navigation radar, with 1x 40mm main gun + 12.7 navy gun as weapon should be enough. target 24-32 unit, construction can be divided to few local shipyard which have capability to construct it. main job is for anti-Piracy/anti-smuggling/SAR. we have so many sea border issue, need alot patrol boat.

If I see that project completed in time within a reasonable budget I will seriously raise the flag for BNS. But until then, TOT and IP... I don't believe it at all.

Malaysian Navy needs more ships to improve security

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) will require additional assets, especially ships, in order to step up security in local waters.
At the moment, six more multi-role naval vessels are needed, said Navy Chief Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar.
Speaking at a press conference during the Navy Media Day on Tuesday, he said the Navy needs to have 50 ships, but currently only has 44.
Abdul Aziz explained that apart from the assets mentioned, other naval systems are at a very satisfactory level.
"What is lacking are only platforms to conduct patrols and surveillance," he said.

Satellite Imagery Shows Russian Military Buildup in Syria

user posted image

New commercial satellite imagery shows in remarkable detail Russia’s escalating military buildup in Syria.

Images taken by Europe’s Pleiades satellite network and released by AllSource Analysis in collaboration with GeoNorth and Airbus clearly show four big Su-30SM Flanker-C and 12 smaller Su-25 Frogfoot fighter jets parked Sept. 20 at the al-Assad International Airport in Syria.

The Russian arsenal in Syria has grown over the past few days to include 28 ground-attack and multi-role fighters, including Su-24 Fencers, according to the Pentagon.

Russia has also deployed to the country 14 helicopters, including the Mi-24 Hind gunship and the Mi-17 Hip transport, a number of SA-22 surface-to-air missile systems, and large fixed-wing surveillance drones, according to multiple news organizations, including The Washington Post and Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, as my colleague Richard Sisk reported, the Russian embassy in Damascus was mortared on Tuesday and the U.S. remains leery of any buildup that seeks to support the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

“We continue to believe that anything that’s done in support of the Assad regime, particularly militarily, is counterproductive and risks worsening an already bad situation,” spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, told reporters at the Pentagon.

His counterpart at the State Department, John Kirby, agreed. “If there’s a constructive role they (the Russians) want to play against ISIL, we’re willing to have that conversation,” he said, referring to militants affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, which the U.S. is targeting with airstrikes. However, if the Russian intent is to “prop up Assad, that’s a whole different matter,” Kirby said.

Republican lawmakers last week blasted the administration’s strategy in the Middle East.

The $500 million effort begun last December to train and equip Syrian rebels in the campaign against ISIS has thus far only produced a handful of fighters actually on the ground in Syria, Army Gen. Lloyd Austin, head of U.S. Central Command, recently testified before Congress.

PLA armored company on routine training exercise ambushed by two 'enemy' attack helicopters, resulting in 80% losses

user posted image

During a recent routine training exercise with the Nanjing military district armored brigades, a few commanders decided to sneak in a surprise element to the exercise: An ambush by two attack helicopters armed with 'anti-tank weapons' on an armored company.

The armored company was reported to have reacted poorly to the surprise helicopter attacks, with conflicting and confusing orders given resulting in reported 80% loss for the armored company. Out of a typical PLA armored company of 14 tanks, this would amount to about 11 or 12 tanks lost to the attack helicopters. The outcome of the botched exercise was claimed to have caused an 'uproar' at Brigade command.

The U.S. Army’s Foreign Military Studies Office took note of the exercise in its monthly journal OE Watch. “It was … apparent that commanders were not staying abreast of recent changes in warfare,” the journal stated.

According to the journal, the 'enemy' ambush was sprung after "When they exploited the victory and staged attacks on “remnant enemies,” two “enemy” helicopter gunships suddenly appeared and fired a number of anti-tank missiles. Facing the abrupt counter-attacks from the opponent, the Fourth Company was knocked off stride and forced into a messy condition. Multiple tanks were hit, releasing red smoke. The battle damage rate of the tanks reached 80 percent."
