Indonesia ready to buy new submarines in Russia — defense minister

Military & Defense  September 22, 8:36 UTC+3

The minister noted that Russian subs can perform longer missions underwater and cruise at lower depths compared with the subs from other countries

BANGKOK, September 21. /TASS/. Indonesia is considering Russia as a potential supplier of new submarines for its naval forces, Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said on Monday upon the end of his meeting with deputies of the national parliament.

The meeting was held behind closed doors.

The new purchases had been endorsed by the president, Ryacudu said, adding a remark that it was much better to buy five new submarines than ten second-hand ones.

He named Russia as an expected supplier of the submarines, saying the Russian subs could perform longer missions underwater and cruise at lower depths compared with the subs from other countries.

Ryacudu did not specify the type of the submarines the Indonesian Armed Forces had interest in or the possible date for signing of the contract.

Russian Minister of Industry and Energy, Denis Manturov, said during a visit to Jakarta in October 2014 that Indonesia was considering a purchase of diesel-powered submarines of the Varshavyanka class.

Venezuela to Buy at Least 12 Russian Fighter Jets - President Maduro

user posted image

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — Venezuela will purchase at least 12 fighter jets from Russia, President Nicolas Maduro said Sunday.

"I will talk to [Russian] President Vladimir Putin to deliver at least 12 new [Sukhoi] Su [fighter jets] to Venezuela and replace the one lost [on Friday]," Maduro said as quoted by the Noticias24 news website.

On Friday, a Venezuelan Air Force Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jet crashed on the country's border with Columbia.

The Venezuelan government also plans to sign a contract with China on military equipment delivery, the president added. The equipment will be used to fight drug trafficking, particularly from Colombia, according to him.

The Sukhoi Su-30 is a multi-role fighter aircraft (NATO reporting name Flanker-C) of 4+ generation developed by Russia's Sukhoi Aviation Corporation.

Ukroboronprom to ship next batch of tanks to Thailand by year's end

17.09.2015 | 16:48

The next batch of Oplot tanks, the latest development of the Ukrainian armored industry, will be shipped to Thailand by December 31, 2015, First Deputy General Director of state-owned Ukroboronprom Concern Serhiy Pinkas told UNIAN.

"We have met the latest deadline for the delivery of five tanks under the contact with Thailand. The next deadline is set for December 31," Pinkas said in an exclusive interview with UNIAN.

Pinkas also pointed to some difficulties that the company had been facing while manufacturing these tanks.

"I can't say that the production of Oplot tanks is smooth and easy. It's far from being easy. I can only say that a personnel reshuffle at the Malyshev tank plant is a signal that not everything has been good there. Now we have bought metal for [manufacturing] a very large batch of tanks. The situation with the supply of components has improved. In short, the pace may not be the one we would like to achieve, but let us wait until the end of the year, and we'll make an official announcement then," Pinkas said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in early 2015 Ukroboronprom's management announced plans to produce 40 Oplot tanks in 2015, and reach the production target of 100-120 tanks per year in 2016 and on.

In June 2015, the company's management dismissed the director of the Malyshev plant for the failure to fulfill the Oplot production plans. For this end, Ukroboronprom said private enterprises were engaged in the production of the tanks as the concern's own production capacities are insufficient.

In 2011 Ukraine signed a contract with Thailand for the shipment of 49 Oplot tanks worth about $250 million. The first batch of five tanks was delivered in late 2013. Another five tanks were shipped to Thailand in June 2015.

Ukroboronprom's management repeatedly noted that it was more economically feasible to export Oplot tanks rather than use them in the Anti-Terrorist Operation in eastern Ukraine, while channeling proceeds from the export to upgrade mothballed military hardware.

Philippine Army's Mechanized Infantry Division to Get Another 114 M-113s

Wilfrey Morena | 23:00 | 0 comments

The Philippine Army (PA)'s Mechanized Infantry Division(MID) is scheduled to get another 114 M-113 armored personnel carriers (APCs) starting November this year."Hopefully, they will arrive by the middle of November this year," MID head Major Gen. Mayoralgo Dela Cruz said in an interview Monday.

All will be coming from the US as these are declared "Excess Defense Articles."Dela Cruz said the Philippines did not pay any money for the acquisition of these M-113s except for the shipping and refurbishment costs. The PA operates around 343 AFVs (armored fighting vehicles) and APCs.

Around 85 percent of these AFVs are on green status (fully mission capable) while another 10 percent are on yellow status (undergoing repair) and five percent are on red (beyond repair).

One hundred and fifty of these are the United Kingdom-built GKN "Simba" with the remaining AFVs consisting of US designed V-150 and V-200 APCs, M-113s, Turkish made ACV-300s and British Scorpion CVRTs.

These vehicles give the PA its armor capability and are organized into a 14-vehicle mechanized infantry companion for deployment with regular units.

Russia, Iran Seen Coordinating on Defense of Assad Regime in Syria

user posted image

QUOTE
The U.S. and other Western governments are closely watching for what actions Russia, Iran and the Syrian regime take now.

One possibility, said analysts, is an operation around the ancient city of Palmyra to target Islamic State militants. Mr. Putin has described the Russian presence in Syria as a counterterrorism operation, and he is scheduled to address the U.N. General Assembly in New York on Sept. 28. He could cite Palmyra to back his claims.

Syrian warplanes have intensified airstrikes against Islamic State in Palmyra in recent days, according to opposition activists monitoring the conflict as well as Syrian state media.

Another target could be al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front in Idlib province. The militia and its allies control almost the entire northwestern province with the exception of two Shiite villages, where Hezbollah and other Iranian-trained militias are deployed.

“The first major operation will tell us what their intentions are,” said Elias Farhat, a retired Lebanese army general and military strategist, referring to Iran and Russia.

He said evidence from the ground indicates the Russians, Iranians and Hezbollah are establishing a joint-operational command center in Latakia, near the airport.

The increasing Russian-Iranian defense of Mr. Assad is placing the Obama administration in a diplomatic and strategic bind.

It quoted an unnamed senior military source saying Russia is considering a limited operation “that confirms the seriousness of Russia’s intentions.”

The source, who the paper said was involved in high-level military planning, said the idea would be to carry out a small but effective and highly visible operation, possibly involving air or artillery strikes against Isil militants.

At this moment, souring relation between Russia and the EU means that we can't get a custom-made Su-30MKM anymore. So the options are either Su-30MS or Su-35.

Cent Com reports 75 US-trained rebels return to Syria

user posted image

QUOTE
BEIRUT, Lebanon - About 75 America-trained rebels have returned to Syria to fight the Islamic State, the US Central Command said Monday, days after its commander General Lloyd Austin told a dissatisfied Senate armed services committee that only a handful of the earlier trained fighters were actively battling the Sunni jihadi group.
The newly trained rebels are reported to have entered Syria from Turkey crossing the border in gun-mounted four-wheel drives in a convoy, under air cover from the US-led coalition that has been carrying out strikes against the Islamic State.

The Central Command said in a statement that about 70 graduates of the $500-million Syria Train and Equip program had re-entered Syria with their weapons and equipment.

The statement said that they were operating as New Syrian Forces alongside Syrian Kurds, Sunni Arab and other anti-Islamic State forces.

Satellite Imagery Shows Russian Military Buildup in Syria

user posted image

New commercial satellite imagery shows in remarkable detail Russia’s escalating military buildup in Syria.

Images taken by Europe’s Pleiades satellite network and released by AllSource Analysis in collaboration with GeoNorth and Airbus clearly show four big Su-30SM Flanker-C and 12 smaller Su-25 Frogfoot fighter jets parked Sept. 20 at the al-Assad International Airport in Syria.

The Russian arsenal in Syria has grown over the past few days to include 28 ground-attack and multi-role fighters, including Su-24 Fencers, according to the Pentagon.

Russia has also deployed to the country 14 helicopters, including the Mi-24 Hind gunship and the Mi-17 Hip transport, a number of SA-22 surface-to-air missile systems, and large fixed-wing surveillance drones, according to multiple news organizations, including The Washington Post and Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, as my colleague Richard Sisk reported, the Russian embassy in Damascus was mortared on Tuesday and the U.S. remains leery of any buildup that seeks to support the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

“We continue to believe that anything that’s done in support of the Assad regime, particularly militarily, is counterproductive and risks worsening an already bad situation,” spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, told reporters at the Pentagon.

His counterpart at the State Department, John Kirby, agreed. “If there’s a constructive role they (the Russians) want to play against ISIL, we’re willing to have that conversation,” he said, referring to militants affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, which the U.S. is targeting with airstrikes. However, if the Russian intent is to “prop up Assad, that’s a whole different matter,” Kirby said.

Republican lawmakers last week blasted the administration’s strategy in the Middle East.

The $500 million effort begun last December to train and equip Syrian rebels in the campaign against ISIS has thus far only produced a handful of fighters actually on the ground in Syria, Army Gen. Lloyd Austin, head of U.S. Central Command, recently testified before Congress.
