Actually, both are equally good pets. It just depends on the buyer. Rats are more interactive and can be trained well using treats as if training a dog heheehh.... of course I do not train my rats that way but they are very nice to handle.... my friends are quite surprised when my rats sat in their arms for 1 hour. They enjoy being cuddled. Gerbils only can be held for a short time.... they do not like long handlings but a few handlings a day is fine.

I got 6 hahahah.... 4 females and 2 males. So I am getting ready for 40 future rats if they each gonna give me 10 baby rats each time LOL....
Some will end up as pets while some will need to be food for other pets.... circle of life so I can't really help it anyway. But still quite a number will become pets to anyone who wants them lah.
I have experienced with fancy mice, gerbils, hamsters and now rats.... my favourites are still gerbils... next are my rats then only hamsters and later on mice heheheh....

QUOTE(snowcandy @ Mar 21 2007, 10:17 PM) I only have experience with hamsters. I have 2 with me now and they have been with me for almost a year. So I'm pretty much a newbie with rats. Hehe. Will do some reading up about them though. You can have a go at these 2 websites... I find them very useful since got many links. http://www.curiosityrats.com/infodiy.htmlhttp://www.petratscanada.com/ratcare.htm

Hahah... gerbils are active and smell less.... Rats are smarter but smell a bit. A gerbil cannot sit still.... so a rat would be a good pet to bring around.

QUOTE(Reanne @ Mar 26 2007, 06:19 PM) lol I brought her to a hairstylist to cut my hair once. She was sitting on my shoulder and when the guy lifted my hair, he yelled 'OHH MY GOODNESS! What's that??' But he only got a light shock, he said that she was a very pretty rat and so white. LOL I guess he's never seen a white rat before. I'm gonna have many white rats.... and black hoodeds heheheh... Oh oh... I spotted a rat pup that looks like your Autumn. Cute cute. Chubby Chubby. And I did something I have never done before..... I gave 3 gerbil pups to my rat to foster.... and guess what? All of them have full bellies of milk hahahah...

QUOTE(snowcandy @ Mar 26 2007, 06:27 PM) Wow. That's so cool! And once again I'm being facinated by the wonderous things rats can do. Hahaha... yah... facinating. Only mice and rats can foster other pups.... gerbils may attack sometimes but they can foster other gerbils pups. Sometimes a dominant gerbil may kill strange pups coz not their clan while hamsters.... hahaha... hamsters are worst. Rats and mice make good mothers naturally.

LOL.... I prefer Suggies and my dogs... somehow got very strong emotional bond with them. Rats for me are fun to have and to play with but for long term companionship, suggies and dogs are the best... Gliders can live 15 years.

QUOTE(kurikuraX @ Apr 21 2007, 11:07 AM) Wah cfp! nice home u got there for those rats! Im just go through the infomation on the very 1st page. Is the rat chow is hard to get here? Actually i know a lab supplier which supplied a rats chow and i forget how much he sells per bags. In UPM also we got sells those rats chow pallets in Veterinary faculty..they sells in kg later i'll go check for u guys Rat chow is hard to find.... now Pets Wonderland got bring in LM Farms lab blocks but they look so so... old and is not nutritious enough. What brand is the rat chow in UPM? Hmmm.... If it is possible for us to get, we don't mind hahah.... would be good for our rats too. Hope to get some good news from you.

QUOTE(Reanne @ Apr 21 2007, 10:30 PM) UPM doesn't use proper lab blocks. They use a brand of stockfeed called Gold Coin. Ohhhh.... stockfeed.... then dunno what it contains inside... Oh, I gave my rats a treat last night... canned dogfood... they really LOVE it but this is only a treat for them hahaahah.... it smells so so so so goooooddddd.... like luncheon meat.

You can get some mealworms and start to train them to answer their names or answer a universal call hahaha.... You can try what a few zoos do.... when ever they feed the animals, they blow a whistle and the animals will come when they hear the whistle.... so you can make a universal calling like a word or something to associate food.... then they will soon learn to come when you call them ahahh... I have not tried this with my adults coz I got them quite big already.... so I'm starting to do this with one of the babies I have.

QUOTE(snowcandy @ Apr 23 2007, 12:19 AM) Okays, btw, what do you feed the mealworms to keep them alive? I still have to figure a way to overcome my fear of worms. xD Hahah... mealworms just need a container with some oats inside and once awhile you feed with some vegie... that is all.

Mealworms are smooth and wriggly.... at 1st you will feel disgusted and geli.... but later once you get used to it, you won't think about how they feel in your hands anymore haahahh...
