Hi all GPS Sifu,

Planing to get stand alone GPS navigator.
After I read from page 1 to page 65, seems like I still can't get my answer. So below is my few questions:- (Sorry for the noob questions)

1) Why most of the member also recommended Garmin, Papago, Way Way, Tom Tom.. or other good reputation brand? Price wise is not cheap compare to other China or Taiwan brand.

a) Is it because of the built quality?
b) Is it because of hardware specification different?
c) Is it because of map updated issue?
d) software?
e) Warranty issue?
f) Support?

From what I understanding... those China or Taiwan brand also can install Garmin or Papago software right?
So if install Garmin, we also can get free map from Malsingmaps and malfreemaps.com right?
Is it all the China or Taiwan brand install crack software/map so it can't be updated????

Sorry for the noob question again, because I really don't know why we must pay more for Garmin or Papago or other brand.
Hope all Sifu can clarify more....

Many thanks!!!! smile.gif

1 - branded gps perform well. unlike the 9 in 1 china stuff, those are unlicensed and their processing power is limited. Choosing a gps system is important based on price, affordability, userbility and most importantly the map which is the heart and soul of every gps. almost all recognise brands have their pros and cons but the thing that separates them distinctively is the maps which are available.
some brands u pay for the maps, some brands load in free maps for you.
In malaysia and singapore which u travel in most often, free maps are available from
www.malfreemaps.com
www.malsingmaps.com

both give out free maps, no charges no registration needed no strings attached. totally FREE. but only available in selected brands.
malfreemaps gives out maps for garmin units and papago units.
malsingmaps gives out maps for garmin units and mapking units.

so if its malaysia u're looking at, garmin, papago and mapking are it.
the rest of it such as igo, tomtom and route66 and even miomaps are just plain rubbish.
community maps (free ones) are better than commercial maps, due to the points of interests which are unrestricted and plentyful.

a)built quality for brands is there. you can see and feel the difference. warranty wise also plenty of difference.
b)china's hardware can be better than oem's. but u get what u pay for. the lower u pay, the lower your processing power.
c)china machines normally have no issues with maps since most use unlicensed products, therefore the maps also all cracked.
d)software not much difference.
e)warranty issue plenty of diff. is like buying a AP machine and ori machine. AP machines send back to the shop u buy from. ori machine u send back to any of their authorised dealers or cust care centers.
f)support for ori sure got. support from china is .......back at the shop u bought from unless they gulung tikar.

whether or not your machine is from china or ori, you can be assured of using malfree or malsing maps.
all that matters is the legality of your operating system and navigational software. those are the ones that need product license which i doubt is bundled with cheap < RM300 china machines.

you pay more for papago and garmin and mapking because of:

1) tech support
2) wide coverage warranty
3) licensing factors (legality)
4) a peace of mind.

the cheapest and decent gps i bought is gpsbay 3033 at courts mammoth at 299. its use mapking.
then i accidently corrupted my sd card where the mapking is installed.

after googling around, i succeeded installing garmin mobile xt 5.00 on it since it use wince 5.0.
now with latest malfreemaps installed, this gpsbay 3033 really great just like other expensive garmin gps set.

can anybody teach me how to install garmin mobile xt 5.00 on my gpsbay 3303

spec looks ok. 500MHz cpu with 128 of rams is sufficient to run almost all the gps softwares around.

*note - almost all definitely not all.

WinCE 5.0 is the most stable among all. Running WinCE 6.0 you might run into some difficulties depending on which navigational software you'd wanna install.

but do bear in mind, buying a device like this, raises the question of legitamacy. piracy is quite rampant in asia so therefore to minimise piracy and morality issues, lowyat.net has a zero tolerance on the piracy matter.
