Subject: [Technology] Community facing problems

Dear Editor,

Hello, my name is Nicholas and I would like to highlight to The Star regarding a major issue we have been facing. Over at http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=135140 ; for more that 4 1/2 weeks have we been having problems with StreamyX. After numerous calls, and eMails to both AT&T and StreamyX, the issue is yet to be resolved.

We are a community of World of Warcraft players. StreamyX's 219.xxx.xxx.xxx IP range is causing massive latency, around 2-6k pings. This causes US base website to load slow, sites such as CNN.com, MSNBC.com. Search engines are fine.

Would you please visit: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=135140 and help us with our plight ?

Thank you.

Regards,
N|cholasC.

Streamyx just called *surprise surprise* and asked me to troubleshoot with the technician. I told them I'll call back and do it tonite coz I'm leaving now. Don't think it'll help, but at least somebody DID take action based on my report I sent in 3-4 days ago.

Remember to ask him to bring his OWN laptop and modem when he goes over to your place. That way, he won't have an excuse that your PC or modem is malfunctioning.

And if he tells you that it's congestion on the international link, show him that a simple dial-up connection works better wink.gif

Good luck!

TMNET TEMPORARY SERVICE INTERRUPTION

This is to announce that TM Net Sdn Bhd's Internet service is currently experiencing a slight drop in performance caused by several outages due to service degradation at some of its international links to Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Korea, Japan, Thailand and United States. Our multiple link providers which subscribe to the international carriers are still trying to restore their system for TM Net service.

TM Net is currently running slightly short on international capacity due to the problem. The congestion will be alleviated as soon as the international carriers fully restore their services for our connectivity. Meanwhile, we have taken immediate action to divert some traffic through our tmnet Eastgate service as well as to other back-up links to reduce the Internet international traffic congestion. The international providers are carrying out rectification works in stages and we will be making an announcement when the service has resumed to normal.

TM Net Sdn Bhd apologizes for any inconvenience caused but at the same time we would like to assure you that what we are doing is necessary in order to restore the service as soon as possible.

Customers can call our TM Net Customer Interaction Center at 1-300-88-9515 or 1-300-88-1515 from 8:00 a.m. till midnight or email at custcare@tm.net.my for further enquiries about the service.

---------------------------------------------------------
Has the net line gotten worst ? or its the same (ping) ? I seriously hope they are talking about the problem we have been experiencing for 4 weeks, not a NEW PROBLEM that is occuring just today.

Guess, this means we don't have to goto Clickers, Wildside.

Its a new problem sad.gif I'm usually able to get sub 500 ping on 60.xx.xx.xx or 218 or 219.93 IP, but today its totally busted. I was playing fine with 500 ping just an hour or so ago (we killed kazzak! He's sooooo easy we're gonna farm him for loot every 7 days barring interference) then suddenly my ping went up to 800...ok, still playable.

Went with guildies to dance and was planning a DM run when suddenly I lagged bad....then saw my ping 2000. Then lagged again....5000. When it hit 8000 I quit and restarted modem.....got 218 (I was playing on 219.93) and couldn't log on or log into the WoW official site. Restarted to get 219.93, wait 10sec to login to WoW servers, didn't even bother to load the game sad.gif

What can I say? maybe after 1 BIG problem they'll fix all the other problems thats been plagueing us. Chances are tho that nothing gets fixed adn we all have to ween our addiction sad.gif

Bah, gonna go sulk in a corner now.

It's a new problem to everybody else EXCEPT us.

It seems everybody, including the people on 218.*, 60* and even the 1515 dial-ups on 219.92.* has hopped on our bandwagon.

Interesting how the level of solidarity amongst Malaysian broadband users goes up when it's no longer just someone else's problem. wink.gif

Trip to Clickers will still be necessary if regular service resumes for everybody else except those of us stuck on 219.95.*

The thing is, it may be down because they are fixing OUR 4 week old problem. However, like diswasher said, hopefully when they do fix the NEW problem, the OLD one will revert back to normal.

Oh Im confused, please make sense out of this someone biggrin.gif

Well, here's what I posted in the thread at the Streamyx forum below...

QUOTE
Optimistically
Telekom and TMnet will take the opportunity to fix their routing tables and the gateway (MYgate?) pathing. Everything becomes well again, and the weekend gaming orgy can proceed.

Pessimistically
This will the last straw that broke the camel's back. Internet provision in Malaysia sinks to a new low.
And yes, I hope it goes back to normal for us as well after this... and in time for the weekend.

It's no fun hanging around in IF looking at auctions and washing mooncloth every four days like I've been doing lately.

There's Scholomance to finish and Rakh'likh to kill!!

Well, we technically cannot complain our old problem now since they officially admitted there IS a problem. Whether the problem is that same problem, we'll just have to wait until they announce that all their problems is resolve and our problem still not. As of now we still got problem.
Problems, problems, problems, what to do....... wait lor, we are good at that mah....

I believe it's a new problem - and it just happens to make the old problem even worse, that's all.

I'm betting it's a submarine cable fault, in which will take days to resolve, if we're lucky... re-routing would not be simple as that.

Don't hold your breath guys..

Jeff Ooi has posted the Streamyx distruption on his wegblog at
Jeff Ooi

Can someone who is registered to his screenshot comments page, please drop a message and link our thread here and inform them our problems that started 3 weeks ago? I would do it, but unfortunately the registration process requires a valid e-mail and I'm at work and I'm not willing to use my work e-mail for personal stuff.

I'll do it later tonite when I'm back home if nobody does it.

I don't know if posting there will help, but I'm hoping it will attract the mainstream readers and not just geeks like us. smile.gif

I'm not.. which is why I've made alternate plans for the weekend..

So umm, anybody want to donate something for a return air ticket for me and my PC to the States for the weekend? I'm not unreasonable and expecting First Class or anything. Economy will be fine biggrin.gif

But seriously, I suppose this will be a good weekend to work on and finish up my borang cukai taksiran sendiri and then do some shopping at IKEA.

Posted on Jeff Ooi's Website as an article comment (Awaiting his approval):

This problem stems from the IP range 219.xxx.xxx.xxx of StreamyX. Our community has been having this problem for 4 1/2 weeks now. It's not new, I personally have called StreamyX 13 times - longest call was the 11th call lasting 1 1/2 hours.

Then they told me it's beyond their boundaries and I have to contact AT&T. Which is rediculous because StreamyX is the provider, I dont complain to their supplier, I complain to the person that sold me the good.

5 emails sent to AT&T, 8 eMails to StreamyX, 1 to The Star. Best thing is, I got an eMail this morning from their customer care saying "Our international links has been restored" - then they post this news up that there's a problem.

Our community spoke to the same customer care exec, and the best thing is - this guy claims no one has complained before *laugh*. When we have 3 forums regarding this issue for over 4 weeks, it's not a simple matter.
