Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is also pretty tempting. Lots of camera apps. Smaller screen 4.7".
battery life seems good

i didnt reccommend LG G4 since u wanted screen size below 5" but beware of the bootload problem that the users are facing where the phone are bricked

if u dont mind big phones... LG V10 (aka camera king at the moment) or Huawei Mate 8 (another good alternative)

Honor 7 Enhanced is also above 5"

that's why i prefer unrooted phone / as vanilla android as possible so i won't brick it

Currently my dad is using Asus Zenfone 4, mainly for calls, Whatsapp & Wechat only. Until these few days, not sure why but the phone is overheating until unacceptable level. Closed all the background app & close data usage (including Wifi & 3G) only solve the problem for first 2 days, and problem comes again. So I'm looking for alternative phone for my dad.

Mi4 for the extra 1gb of RAM. Imho, in 2016, minimum RAM on an android should be 3gb dy.

Btw u can also consider Redmi Note 3 (3gb RAM + 32gb ROM version) at RM919.

Have a look at Garage Sales for second hand Nexus 5. It's hard to find a pure android experience with ur budget.
