I also have the urge to buy AW13 R3 without the OLED (RM1.6k additional ??)

My last 2 alienware laptop M11x & M14x still working but i think they at their bottleneck already.

M14x (GTx555m model) with win 10 also feel sluggish even after fresh install

So is it recommended to get AW13?

My preference now is compact and easy to bring out travel

You won't go wrong with the new AW 13. Even if you don't opt for the OLED panel, color gamut and accuracy wise is on par with most good displays.

How is the display quality of FHD 1080p IPS panel for the new AW13? I am also going to buy one soon with IPS panel.

you can try set up a custom pagefile with size 512mb minimum and 1024mb maximum, if that's the case, and see if w10 runs ok.

I set to whatever Windows recommended me.

Hi all, any AW reseller here can pm me best price for the new AW 13 R3 (RSP RM6,611) and AW 15 R3 (RSP RM8,999) with i7-7700HQ and GTX1060? Dell online store recommended base spec will do. Thanks.

yeah that's fine too. i suggested the custom pagefile size is because it's much more smaller than the system-allocated one, so you get to save some ssd space for better use.

lol I put the page file into my HDD. Windows recommend 2.9GB, I set 2.9-24GB (1.5x16GB) and usually it'll use around 3.1GB. Maybe I should just assign 4GB into the SSD.

i also think you should set up 4gb page file in ssd if this is the case and see if it works for you. putting page file in hdd is ok but it's much slower when in use.

tbh aw (at least models that i used before and am still using) are good machines. with enough system resources (cpu, psu power, ram, ssd, etc.) they're really running at peak performance (even though they are getting old hehe, especially gpu). so far most common issues that i faced are all human-induced (my itchy hands).

Alright I've set 4GB on my SSD, and giving it a try since I still has some spare space there.

The AW15 thermal paste issue did freak me a bit. I don't want to mess with re-pasting myself.

for thermal paste replacement, i think you can call dell support to help you out, provided that you prepare the necessary stuff for them (thermal paste, alcohol, cottons, etc.) alternatively i really think it can be done with a bit of patience. (there are many screws, cables, and ribbons)

i wonder why they don't wanna keep the simplicity of internal design in aw. for m17x r4, you just need to unscrew the back plate held by 2 screws, and the cooling system is ready to be taken off and cleaned up.

Yes. I've seen the 17 R4 disassembly and taking it apart is a hell lot difficult compared to R1 and R2, which is the design I've been adored of since M17x years. Another is that they no longer use MXM GPU, so that means upgrades are near to impossible unless you can find the right person to solder the GPU.

true; it needs more patience lol

yeah that soldered thing. sad. to be safe imo it's better to do direct swap of the whole mobo, rather than asking someone capable to do soldering. we don't know for sure if the gpu swap can actually be done easily just by mere soldering. not sure if the circuitry in pcb is compatible for the replacement gpu.

Yeah, and that's more economic as well.

Anyway, after calculating my budget, I may get my Alienware 17 by this September or October. biggrin.gif
Soon to enjoy the privilege of console and PC gamer.

You mean I won't void the warranty if I do the recasting myself?

if you're careful, no (simply put, no damage to original parts, no warranty voided). tbh as long as you're careful and patient, nothing will go wrong. also, after the second time of disassembly, i think you can remember what to do in the right sequence to do a whole disassembly.

i also swapped almost everything that i could replace in my aws (took out stock parts and swapped ram, ssds, replacement hdd caddy for bdrom, wifi card, cpu heat sink, cpu, gpu, thermal paste, thermal pads; these stock parts are still like new today) when original parts (e.g. mobo, power jack, keyboard, power brick, display) had issues, dell techs came and helped me replace faulty parts only.
