It seems my temp is uber high at 80+ even at idle. I guess it's time to replace the thermal paste?

Yes that's way over tolerable limit. (85c under load; and you have that at idle) You must clean up the fans, heat sink, and vents for cpu and gpu. In your case, normal thermal paste like mix-4 will do the job well. For better thermal performance, I suggest you use gelid gc-extreme.

Cool. Will the Arctic Silver 5 do? So I need to get some rubbing alcohol too, eh? Damn it. Anyways.
The 3 vents at the bottom and 2 rear of the laptop?

As5 is a good paste, however it needs curing time; meaning they need time to reach optimal performance. In the case of as5, it's like 200 hours (it's stated in the as5 user manual; also take a look at the recommended way to apply it). Modern thermal pastes usually have no curing time. Just apply and that's it.

Basically you need a screw driver, a brush, a bottle of >90% alcohol, cotton/cotton butts, and thermal paste. It's better to do this outside of your house haha

You take off battery, press power button for a few secs to drain power; take off back cover, unplug fans cables; take off fans, heat sinks. Then starts cleaning up biggrin.gif

edit: i have tried some thermal pastes, including as5, ic diamond, tuniq tx-4, mx-4, prolimatech pk-2 and 3, coolaboratory liquid ultra (clu), and gelid gc-extreme. to me i think gc-extreme is a better choice, because it has good results, and it doesn't leave anything behind (e.g. ic diamond is abrasive and it leaves black stain-like marks on the copper heat sink; clu is conductive, corrode aluminum, and is hard to remove)

Done. Cleaned it just now. Couldn't find the Gelid GC-Extreme. But I guess this one will do until it arrives from Korea lol. Bought one from eBay. Should be fun to give a good paste a try.

Also did a clean reinstall of graphic drivers and it seems my games are running uber smoothly. Damn.

Oh and dude, do you think I should upgrade my GPU to something better in the future? Seems like it'll be a helluva lot of difference from my current.

Maybe the 770M?

you will not screw up. it's super easy so just do cpu and gpu together haha (usually gpu is not so much of a problem. the 3-pipe gpu heat sink is damn good)

other thermal pastes will do also. it's not that they are bad. i previously got gc-extreme from apes.my and storm88. i think idealtech have this a few months ago.

for gpu upgrade e_mc_square should be able to help.

Directly go to GTX 970m la... tongue.gif
If you want GTX 770m due to tight budget. I recommend you try out GTX 870m.
It is a very good card and running so damn cool blush.gif

Took a look at your thread, 870M is way beyond my budget. I've only got....1k to spare lol.

What about the 860M or the 770M? I don't really see a difference lol

MXM version of 860m and 770m is kepler
The soldered version of 860m is Maxwell version.

Don't get confuse. MXM version of 860m is slightly weaker than 770m.

tbh if possible get at least 870m. spec wise, it's relatively better than 680m, with 4gb vram.

680m is a strong card.

Yup,
I got two here, this is customer one. MSI GTX 970m 3GB GDDR5.
Surprisingly, mine, Clevo GTX 970m 6GB GDDR5 performance is lower than MSI one. blink.gif

maybe it's because of type of vram? not sure if the size of vram (3gb vs. 6gb) impacts performance also.

yeah it's yet another mystery to be learned the truth lol

since you did oc on gpu core only, i suspect it might have something to do with asic quality? (it's not about vram) can you obtain the asic quality of these cards?
