no i always use dgpu so nvidia cp has a complete set of functions. try press fn + f7 to toggle the switch from igpu to dgpu or vice versa.
*
You are right, switching to dGPU only will have full list of settings in Control Panel.

How does it work actually? If toggled the switch first time, in device manager will have only GTX770M listed. If toggle second time, device manager will have both iGPU and GTX770M listed.

unless you keep it in the box permanently, it's just inevitable normal wear and tear. it's not doing you any harm either.

fyi you can look up aw casings at taobao. it can always be replaced with a new set. alternatively, you can pm putochip123 to see if he still help the aw owners to refresh the laptop casings (subject to availability).

Also I don't know why my Alienware fan is buzzing loud when I play heavy games like FIFA 16 on High settings just after an hour playing.

huh? gaming will make fans working harder. that's normal, as long as the cpu and gpu temperatures are good (below 80c)

how long is the laptop with you? if a laptop is still used actively for gaming, it's better to keep the cooling system in better shape, e.g. clean the cooling system once in a while (fans, vents, replacement of thermal paste), put a notebook cooler under it, and play games in air-conditioned room if possible.

a good gaming laptop can run under load for hours, and still dissipate excess heat very efficiently. you never need to do undervolt or anything to sacrifice its performance to achieve that. alienware is a good gaming laptop, and it has a decent cooling system. i overclocked my aw18 cpu to 4ghz since day one. i never had overheating issues, be it cpu or gpu. (cpu is usually below 80c; gpu is usually below 75c; those are max consistent temperatures under loads for hours) all i do is to maintain the cooling system once in a while (6 to 9 months once. actually i can do once a year because my place is not really dusty)

edit: the max temperatures are measured at room temperatures. in air-conditioned rooms they're a few degrees lower.

hi long time no see smile.gif

i just install intel drivers (inf, rst, mei, igpu) and reboot. then install nvidia modded driver and reboot. the rest i use windows updates to find appropriate drivers for me. (as long as there is no exclamation marks in device manager i'm good lol)

in terms of laptops, these days i only use aw18 for gaming.

er the one i had previously should be either aw command center or osd. i used the w8.x version from dell. install .net framework 3.5 from programs and features, then install those. all are good here.

wait, are you using 120hz screen or 60hz? it worked on the one with 60hz screen.

to me aw m17x r4 (60hz screen with gpu mod), and asus g55 are among the older machines that can run w10 without issues. most drivers are ready. g55 is the machine i used to test tech/insider previews before w10 launch. after that i used aw18 for testing (to check sli compatibility).

Uh? Be careful, there were some folks that found out in w10 edid corruption might occur, hence making the display panel to become bricked.

What do you mean you lost the link? Go to dell support page, find the laptop, choose its driver page, change is to w8.x. ( w8.0 and w8.1)

Based on the information I gather from internet so far.

The program is due to overclock program called EVGA Precision X.

At 1st,

Win 10 + Nvidia Driver ---> This create a vulnerability of the EDID of the LCD can be access directly by program

If this happened, there is no turning back. The vulnerability will always stay there.

And if you install EVGA Precision X, that program some how will access the EDID of the LCD and corrupt it.

That mean, once you install Win 10 + Nvidia Driver.

Even if you revert back to Windows 7, Windows 98 or Windows 95, as long as you install EVGA Precision X, your LCD EDID will be corrupt.

So, for those who already install Windows 10. Stay away from EVGA Precision X and you will be fine.

That's one of the findings (yes only precisionx. Not afterburner or nvidia inspector) but how do you explain initial cases that didn't involve precisionx? Mr Fox didn't use precisionx when his 2 screens bricked.

The edid corruption can be fixed with edid-rw with the rom file extracted from the same screen.

No, his findings is he did installed precision X when he bricked his screen.
When he fixed the EDID and uninstall precision X, it never happened again.

What Mr. Fox facing more precisely is, only newer version of the precision X will cause the EDID corruption. But still don't know what version yet.

Some other use that report is with different issue. Which most of them can see the screen is on in post or bios, just that is blank/black when it enter the OS.

So now it is still unsafe to upgrade my AW17 to GTX980M after I upgraded to Win 10? How about GTX970M?

it's better to double check first. if not, download the edid tool just in case. (someone has made a linux bootable package for download the last time i checked)
