Hi everyone,

Mind if I ask if anyone here has the above mentioned syndrome? Specifically sleep apnea.

I have googled about it somewhat and most recommended cpap.

I wonder is there any alternative treatment? Preferably more economical ones.

Have you done a sleep study?

If not you will not know whether cpap is required.
Also weight loss will be helpful. If you have not seen ear nose throat doctor, go see one too

How about ent doctor?

For the time being. Sleep on side. You can strap tennis ball on your back so you can't sleep on your back.

Whether you will get used to that , I don't know

With proper documentation, you can claim the CPAP machine cost from your EPF acc2.

What sort of treatment ? Surgery ? I have a friend who have done throat surgery. However a few years later, sleep apnea "came back" because muscle tissue have grown back. I am an APAP user myself.

Are you on trial with CPAP machine ? If possible rent and test, see which mask suit you. I would suggest you to get an APAP.

Did the doctor quote you for CPAP machine ? How much is it ?
It was quite expensive, 8 years ago. I am not sure what is the price now in Malaysia. So far I know the cheapest CPAP and mask is from the US.

There are a number of ways of treating sleep apnea :
1) Loose weight especially if your BMI>30
2) Sleep on your side if the apneas occur mostly on your back - for this you will need the doctor to explain the sleep report in a bit more detail ie spending 5 minutes rather than 5 seconds (by just telling you your AHI)
3) CPAP which is currently the best option as far as medical science is concerned
4) Surgery if your surgeon knows how to locate the exact site of blockage when you sleep by doing a sleep endoscopy and also is an experienced surgeon in sleep surgery
5) MAD (mandibular advancement devices) or TAD (tongue advancement devices) - not so popular, not so comfortable and effective

Please be aware that by not treating your sleep apnea, you are at a health risk - it is just like having diabetes and not treating it. Yo must never stop unless you have loss a lot of weight and another sleep study shows that your sleep apnea has resolved due to your tremendous weight loss.

Cheaper to buy from USA as the prices in Malaysia are about 30% more and they claim ti's due to their after sales service and two year warranty
AutoCPAP is the best and easiest to use as well as more comfortable but make sure the mask is one which you are comfortable with

Yeah, I have been buying from the US for many years now. Much cheaper. In contrary, I no longer use APAP, I discover CPAP is ok for me too. Mask wise, I found what suits me long ago.

Excellent input Babba and it couldnt be stressed enough on the importance of weight loss in managing OSA; a great majority of which, obesity is the culprit. No amount of CPAP time will help cure OSA, it will only allow more restful sleep-time, and hence affords the patient a greater capacity to assume more active lifestyles in the hope that this will contribute to better weight; on getting better rest and then proceeding to the nearest food-stalls will beat the entire argument. MAD helps but if tolerated. I have never prescribed TAD. A friend's husband got (what sounded like a) UPPP and a fellow doctor friend got a UPPP and of course these were curative (atho the former almost died from secondary haemorrhage ha ha no worries this is rare). Depending on overall weight, the amount of tissue that ''collapses'' so to speak, in the laryngeal area during sleep is actually so great that in some people, it is a miracle that their hypoxic (brain) time does not contribute to neurologically discernible brain injuries. Well laid-out answer Babba.

I dont work or live in Malaysia but a Sleep Study needs lab and the data generated is big, even for medical standards, and best read by experts in that field only; so is there a big General hospital there near Pochong? If there is, then thats your best bet

I remember I saw the test on SJMC or Sunway Medical website before, requires you to sleep there while their nurse/technician monitor you and your machine data.
BP Lab has too but apparently (from what I read on their brochure) they will come to your house and place the machine to monitor your night sleep, then come back and collect data. Haven't been through the test so don't know what does the test really involve. I have been considering to go for one, since my hubby mentioned sometime I breathe heavily then suddenly went all silent like I'm not breathing, although I don't remember I did. He will wake me up and I just turned around and continue sleeping.

I know I had been frequently fatigue despite enough sleep and eating well. Things seems to improve now after I started exercising diligently. Diligently, like 5 to 7 hours a week. So I will postpone taking the test. I can't afford CPAP anyway.

I did a type 2 Sleep Test in Columbia Asia(around 2K) and got myself a Resmed Airsense 10 Auto with mask for 7K. It is expensive but it solved my long distance driving and daytime sleepiness.

If you want to do at home, you can also contact CPAP distibutor. They do it around RM600 to RM900 at your house but consultation need to be done by specialist after you get the result.

Hope this thread is still active.

I got diagnosed with sleep apnea. ahi of 28.

ENTs pushed surgery over cpap but I’m using cpap now on trial for a month. It works BUT my symptoms are not typical Obstructive sleep apnea. I get a narrow throat feeling even while awake. Specially if I’m sitting down for long durations, traffic jam, a flight somewhere etc.

It got so bad that I had trouble breathing while getting a facial (Father’s Day present lol)

So this is where I’m exploring more surgical solutions. Any one has any recommendations on who to go to in KL? Reading up radio frequency ablation but don’t see it offered here. It’s one of the less brutal surgeries out there.

I don’t mind the CPAP but the day time symptoms are getting worse. I started keto and exercises over Ramadan till now. Dropped 3.8kgs and the symptoms are worsening. It’s driving me mad

Only go for surgery as a last resort. Its has lots of complications.

Exhaustion from over exercise can cause sleeping problems and sleep apnea. 3.8kg per month is a little too extreme a drop. Aim for 1kg per month, less carb (don't go keto).
