This is going to be long post, but I have considered all angles and need some advises / additional views as you all may be more thoughtful than me.

My current setup, Google Home -> LG TV (Turned half smart using Chromecast) -> Soundbar and Dining and Bar lights with Yeelight.

I plan to change my current light and fans switches (2 and 3 gang type) to smart switches to further connect with Google Home.

Basically, living room, dining room, staircase, 2 Guest Rooms , Upstairs living room and Master room lights and fans.

Now I'm looking at Sonoff, but most of the light switches doesn't have neutral, all but one of them has a side 20amp power for AC. First thoughts to pull the neutral from that , however may not be good idea safety wise? Thoughts?

Second thoughts, Broadlink or Xiaomi Aqara. However broadlink needs hub? Xiaomi Aqara seems to be only 2 gang type, I do need 3 gang switches by the way.

Appreciate some insights, thoughts into this.

Not long enough. laugh.gif

1. Can pull neutral from it provided it is the same phase. Different phase N wire will trip. I had done this with Sonoff T1 UK switch but I seldom switch on the aircon switch next to it.
Since you are using GH, why don't you use Sonoff Basic?

2. Ya, Broadlink need the RM pro to connect with GH.

3. Can combine Aqara 2 gang with 1 gang? Not suitable if using with GH.
PS: Can use Home Assistant to connect Aqara with GH. brows.gif

Since you are using GH, why don't you use Sonoff Basic? If same phase, will this be safety concern? Some rooms may have ac turn on daily.

1) Yes, using GH, however Sonoff Basic is? I am planning to replace wall switches, how will Sonoff Basic suit this?

3) Home assistant would need extra raspberry pie and config? In this case might not be favourable as I'm trying to minimize devices for the smart home. Combine Aqara 2 gang with 1 gang might be an option, but it creates extra drilling work lol.

Seems like either pulling neutral or broadlink is the best option.

Yes, concern here is on safety, as some AC will be turned on daily.

1. Oh, I thought you are primary using the GH to control the lights. Sonoff Basic is the wifi switch we install near the device. We control it either by Ewelink app, Alexa or GH.

3. Yup, Home Assistant needs RPi and configuration.

You better do research on Broadlink. Lots of bad review on it.

So after reading around.

Seems like i'll need a set of aqara (due to 1 location on stairs) need dual way switch.

As for Broadlink / Sonoff, sonoff is better off. I'll bite the bullet and try to get the neutrals sorted out.

Hope all works, else RM600 for the sonoff will fly...

Things to also consider -

Voice Assistant to a few devices like TV, Soundbar etc is cool but if you need to bark at Google Home every time you wanna turn on a light, that will be tiresome. I give you an example - say you have a dry kitchen, wet kitchen, and a bathroom at the back. Say you want to go to that bathroom at the back, you need to tell GH, "Hey Google turn on dry kitchen lights,------>Hey Google, turn on wet kitchen lights ----->Hey google Turn on Bathroom lights......"
Stopping in between each room. By the time the turn on the first set of lights, I think you already reach the bathroom. You gonna place a voice assistant all over your house?

Your house sounds pretty big. Have you counted how many switches you will need? Take a count first - how many 2 gang, how many 3 gang, etc.
And if your house is big, do you have any wifi dead spots now? You may need to set up a powerful wifi router to accommodate all these.

I counted that i need 4 pieces of 3 gang type and 5 pieces of 2 gang type, that will cover most if not all places.
Wifi dead zone, i may have some.

However other than placing GH all over the house, is there a better idea?

House is only 2.5k sqrt build up.

Probably you need a good AP for coverage. For a two-story house that size, only 1 AP is needed and still get get very good signal strength I believe.

Currently I'm running 2 AP, both with different names but ultimately linking to same router.
Not exactly sure will be an issue or not.
Can't find info online.

On side notes, I have gotten an electrician over, dude doesn't recommend pulling neutral from side 20amp switch. Dilemma.

Sonoff also can be set to be 2 way switch also. Can set scene where button 1 switch 1 (not connected at the live output) can switch light for button 1 switch 2, for example.
ohmy.gif How many switch are you buying? Wanna flash it to Tasmota firmware to integrate in Home Assistant? brows.gif

Always buy one with extra gang than you need (need 2 gang but buy 3 gang, for example) and program the extra gang to like switch off a group of lights.
For example, gang 1 and 2 is connect to lights then set gang 3 to switch off both gang 1 and gang 2 lights.

Better idea is to put automation. Ask kelembai for assistance. laugh.gif

Automation based on presence? I'm trying to avoid motion sensor at the moment, don't want too many gadgets lying around the house yet.

Currently buying 9 switches. But im back to square one after what the electrician told me.

Anyone else pulling neutral from ac/heater power just beside the wall switch?
Would appreciate more feedbacks.

There's no turning back once you tasted the satisfaction of using smart home devices. Ask idoblu on it. biggrin.gif

Unless it is different phase of neutral, the other concern might be the load on the circuit breaker I think.
Did the electrician say why it is not recommended?
Mine Sonoff wall switch also pull N from air con but the air con was rarely used / not used for long hours and it didn't trip when Sonoff switch and aircon is on at the same time.

He has concern the neutral support both and worried of overload.
But i have reservation on his experience dealing with smart switches.

The load pull should be minimal only to support the wifi for Sonoff.

I have option of Broadlink, Aqara and Sonoff now.

Broadlink (need hub) not favourable, but no need neutral. Someone mentioned alot problems, but when google seems minimal
Aqara (need hub) no need neutral, I'll need a set of this to replace one of my switch. Hoping can do it without hub.
Sonoff , best looking, no hub, concern on just the neutral.

i am also researching on all the different brands but i am more inclined to Mi ecosystem as it has more sensors and the aqara switch design is better. Never like touch sensitive switches (i.e. etouch).
However, i have read that the connection of the Mi gateway to Xiaomi mainland server can be quite prickly.
Any user feedback on this?

Thanks.
