QUOTE(alucard89 @ Jan 7 2018, 08:43 PM) Can use custom firmware like ddwrt/openwrt to mimic those mesh feature? Or it's exclusive for expensive routers like google wifi? I think there is no such thing available at the moment. Maybe in future, I don't know

QUOTE(Zot @ Jan 7 2018, 08:45 PM) Yes. TP is the cheapest. However, Asus now release firmware upgrade that allow many of its hardware to form mesh network even though they are not same model. This is very good since you can always ad more unit as needed. Visit Asus website. Those TP Deco M5 with the free 3 years anti-virus thingy - it should still work without anti-virus protection after it expires correct? i mean the router should still work fine on its own, just without any anti virus?

Actually most wifi router can bridge together to form seamless wifi access, I have one wifi router sitting on first floor and configured as bridge which connect to the main router. both use the same WIFI SSID with same password, just different channels, my iphone/ipad can roam between these two wifi AP without losing connection.

Yeah, I'm doing the same time also, device usually just pick the stronger wifi signal. Just curious how much improvement mesh network does than regular repeater setup

I don't know much about TP. Did not own on. I'm still using the ori router that came with TM Unifi . However. like you said, it should work.

Just curious how much improvement mesh network does than regular repeater setup Repeater and mesh is two different things. Please note that Bridging is different thing altogether. Home consumer APs is not powerful. Thought it say can support so many client, but actually it will significantly bogs down probably after more than 6 clients. So, in repeater configuration, you will have no problem in home setup. If in office environment, it is not wise setup, You will better performance in mesh networking.

QUOTE(weikee @ Jan 7 2018, 11:56 AM) Use mikrotik, is good. Have budget use Cisco. I was using Cisco router, later move to mikrotik for house usage. Agree with u. I'm using Mikrotik since 2010 very very stable. Experience with the Google WiFi before. Mesh network if powerful have roaming function, blocking, filtering, guest wifi etc but if u attach to your existing network it will create a new segment ip address that will not routeable with your existing network. That will create another problem if u want to publish some of your equipment to external. The beauty of the Mesh network no network cable require to extend your network except 1 cable use at primary equipment connect to your existing router. I will not go to 100% fully home automation. Will do maybe 30% to 40% only. The rest will use manually. This post has been edited by meLi: Jan 8 2018, 08:40 AM

Another problem with using in-band wireless (or wireless in general) would be the remote AP will not have full speed if the wireless backhaul speed in low due to distance or obstruction. You want to have good coverage but the signal is weak and the speed is only 15Mbps. Put another AP and backhaul through wireless. Then you have very good signal but the maximum speed would be still 15Mpbs

QUOTE(weikee @ Jan 6 2018, 11:32 PM) Depend, sometime ddos will reboot the router, crash the router, or halt the router and they can gain access. Or Maybe is just hardware issues Anyway, I never like tp-link, d-link and many of the taiwan/china brand. TP-Link waste bandwidth. https://www.ctrl.blog/entry/tplink-aggressive-ntpTP-Link resolved the issue https://www.ctrl.blog/entry/ntplink-fixed

Problem with smarthome now it depend on the fat network TCP/IP. The best will have to be on LoRa / LoRaWan or smaller tcp/ip footprint like MQTT. This can be use with radio frequency and not wifi frequency.
Like how the Wireless Alarm sensor, it can go far and battery last for 1-2 years, all still using low footprint radio frequency.

My Mikrotik is coming to 6th year now, i move from cisco 1841 to this, this because Mikrotik uses so much lesser energy than the 1841, and with wifi build in. Now hand itchy want to upgrade to the RB2011... waiting go below RM 500
