Yemeni forces take over Saudi military site

World Bulletin / News Desk

Yemeni soldiers and Popular Committees fighters seized control of al-Me’zab base in southwestern Saudi Arabia near the border with Yemen on Friday.

The Saudi forces in the base fled the site en masse.

The Yemeni forces released footage of the military base following the operation to seize it.

Earlier on Thursday, Yemen’s army and Popular Committees took control of al-Tuwal heights in the Jizan region of southwestern Saudi Arabia.

Yemen’s al-Masirah reported back then that the Yemeni forces entered the mountainous area near the border with Yemen and destroyed several Saudi military vehicles as well as ammunition forcing the Saudi soldiers to withdraw from the region.

The United Nations says that, since March 19, over 1,800 people have been killed and 7,330 injured due to the conflict in Yemen, which was exacerbated by the Saudi airstrikes.

Malaysian naval chief says priority is upgrades, but ASW helos, corvettes on shopping list

Dzirhan Mahadzir, Kuala Lumpur - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
20 May 2015

The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is prioritising upgrades and service life extension programmes (SLEP) over the next five years, although it is also seeking to buy anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters and new corvettes, the service's chief has told IHS Jane's .

Admiral Abdul Aziz Jaafar said that during the 11th Malaysia Plan, which lays out the Malaysian government's fiscal spending plan for 2016-20, "the priority and the focus of the RMN is to ensure that our existing assets maintain its high degree of readiness in performing its operational duties in protecting the sovereignty of the nation."

This means that the emphasis will be on "upgrading and planning the Service Life Extension Programme of our existing frigates and corvettes", he said.

user posted image

QUOTE
BEIJING — China is contributing 600 personnel, including 49 from the military, to multinational disaster relief exercises in Malaysia, the first time it has taken part in such an effort, the Defence Ministry said Saturday.

China’s contribution will include experts from the foreign and civil affairs ministry, along with local government bodies and troops from the army and paramilitary forces, the ministry said.

One of the navy’s most modern amphibious dock ships and its accompanying helicopter will also play a role in the drills, it said.

The name buk is sensitive now especially since it associated with mh17

but the rumours goes it one of the system currently considered for our air defence system. Ironically, on both Ukraine civil war and MH17,
Buk shows it capabilities in shooting down both side fighter planes as well as high flying civilian planes

Swedish Fighter Jet Best Bet For Malaysia's Defence - Manufacturer

(Source: Bernama news agency; published May 21, 2015)
KUALA LUMPUR --- Sweden's latest Gripen fighter jet has what it takes to shoot down the competition to defend Malaysia's skies. Its manufacturer, Swedish-based defence and security company Saab Group, believes the reasons lie in the Gripen NG's cost-efficiency and multi-role operational performances.

Saab Malaysia Vice-President Thomas Linden said the Gripen multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA) was among the first aircraft to focus on air-to-air combat, based on the operational range, payload and built-in Net Centric Warfare (NCW).

He said the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) was currently reviewing the Gripen in a move to replace its ageing 10 Russian-made MiG-29 aircraft.

"RMAF is now evaluating our offer, and I strongly believe that Gripen will be the best solution for Malaysia in defence," he told Bernama after attending a lecture on 'Combat Air System: Future Development, Challenges and Way Forward' at the National Defence University of Malaysia here today.

The talk was presented by Saab Aeronautics's Chief Engineer of Future Air System, Knut Ovrebo. Swedish Ambassador to Malaysia, Bengt G. Carlsson attended the event.

Linden said Gripen NG was one of the best choices as a new generation fighter jet, and had recevied positive feedback and reviews from RMAF and others during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA 15) in March.

He said Saab had been in Malaysia for 40 years supplying the Malaysian Armed Forces with high-performance, cost-efficient defence systems such as navy and army radar systems, airborne self-protection systems for fighters, naval command and control systems and army support weapons including anti-tank weapons.

It also supplied military equipment to many armed forces in the world, and had supplied the Gripen NG fighter jet to South Africa, Hungary, Czech and Brazil.

Meanwhile, Ovrebo told Bernama that Gripen NG, which was equipped with a 27mm Mauser BK27 gun, litening and reccelite, was not only usable in times of war but could also be used for daily training.

He said Gripen also has several advantages such as excellent combat efficiency, situational awareness, seamless collaboration and high survivability.

He said Gripen had been designed to be multi-role whereby, it could perform air-to-air, air-to-surface and reconnaissance missions.

"Besides that, the fighter jet can perform a wide range of missions from offensive and defensive counter-strikes to air policing and tactical air reconnaissance, he added.

Guys,

Just curious, how do you distinguish naval ship by classification?

There's destroyer, cruiser frigate and etc, so what's the different? Just merely by size and armandment?

Germany, France to Develop New Battle Tank to Catch Up With Russia’s Armata

user posted image

The German Defense Ministry has announced its plans for the "Leo 3" (as it's likely to be nicknamed in Germany) to replace its main battle tank, the Leopard 2.

The main reason for the modernization is believed to be the Leopard 2 service life, which is set to expire by 2030.

US Trying to ‘Beat’ Russia’s Armata – German Media

The German media, however, suggest that the real reason is the recently-presented analysis by Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) on Russia’s reinforced combat strength and its recently showcased T-14 Armata tanks, which were presented during the country's Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9.

A column of Armata tanks, equipped with 125mm cannons, rolled through Moscow's historic Red Square on May 9 as Russian President Vladimir Putin and a number of foreign heads of state, including Chinese leader Xi Jinping, watched on.

The BND analysis suggests that even though the combat vehicles unveiled at the parade are still somewhat pre-production models, when completed, it will be a tank with the highest levels of armaments.

According to Deutsche Welle, the manufacturer of the current Leopard 2, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, is scheduled to fuse with the French firm Nexter Systems over the course of this year.

This has prompted the German media to report that the new Franco-German firm, with more than 6,000 staff and a combined turnover of around 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion), could be a strong candidate to win the contract to develop a new battle tank for the German Bundeswehr.

Just before the Victory Day Parade in Moscow, the US bimonthly magazine The National Interest reported on why America should really fear Russia's Armata T-14 tank.

The magazine suggested that Russia actually might be able to deliver in the field the tank of greater speed, maneuverability, firepower and survivability vis-à-vis anything being produced for Western armies.

The Armata is a Russian prototype of a heavy tracked vehicle platform that will be used in the construction of a next-generation main battle tank and a range of other combat vehicles.

The tank's main armaments include a 7.62mm remote-control machine gun and a 125mm smoothbore cannon. The tank is operated by a crew of three, which are housed in an armored capsule in the front.

The military vehicle is also equipped with active counter-mine defense and a suit of circular-view high resolution cameras. It can fire rounds while in motion and travels at a speed of up to 50 miles (80.47 km) per hour.
