the reports are out! latest from hardware.fr about component rate of returns:

http://www.hardware.fr/articles/954-1/taux...posants-15.html

notably, ssd section (ssd is still the component that has the least return rate since years ago, compared to other components like ram, hdd, mobo, gpu, psu, etc.):

top brands - samsung and intel are coming back (last report it's kingston that leads all others)

Samsung 0,20% (previously 0,28%)
Intel 0,27% (previously 0,34%)
Crucial 0,28% (previously 0,42%)
Kingston 0,29% (previously 0,26%)
Sandisk 0,62% (previously 0,56%)
Corsair 1,67% (previously 2,02%)

http://www.hardware.fr/articles/954-7/ssd.html

there are some more ssd information in the conclusion page, too.

Playing games on SSD is really spoiling me.

Lately, I get annoyed if the loading for games is more than 30 seconds.
*
lol! this is bad biggrin.gif

QUOTE(changsheng12 @ Dec 20 2016, 11:37 AM)
so after eye-ing on the garage sales pages, I found that sanDisk and kingston ssd is pretty hot there, the price for ~240gb is around the same range,
so my question is which MODEL is recommended? this is my first ssd and i am quite confused  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif
*
what are the models?

QUOTE(kianweic @ Dec 20 2016, 11:55 AM)
I would go with Sandisk as it is a more established brand.

Having said that, I also have a Kingston SSD (in my Dad's PC, I think) which is working quite well so far. I think it is more than 3 years old.

between PNY CS1311, Sandisk SSD Plus ,  Kingston UV400, which one is recommended? I guess the performance won't be a lot of difference in daily use. So I just want to know which model is the most reliable among these. biggrin.gif
*
sandisk ssd plus.

QUOTE(kianweic @ Dec 20 2016, 03:06 PM)
Wow, that is very low rate of defects (ie. less than 2%) in comparison with mechanical HDD.

Hope to see SSD which as much capacity as HDD (ie. above 6TB) moving forward.
*
no they are below 1% (0.20% for samsung ssds; for hdd, seagate is at 0.70%). the main point of this report is for purchase reference only.

.. ssd with that size will be expensive; samsung 850 evo 4tb is almost 7k. you can do a lot of things with that money lol! (i think i will get titanx instead hahaha!)

Damn that is too expensive for me.

I will probably get a new TV and set aside for another room setup (eventually) with Ultrawide monitor.
*
Exactly.

These days the price for some pc parts is just ridiculous here. It's better to spend money elsewhere

Some Steam games I have installed on my SSD:

1. Dragon Age Inquisition
2. Tyranny
3. Deus Ex Mankind Divided
4. Fallout 4
5. Skyrim Remastered version
6. Crysis 3 and etc

The loading time for these games have significant reduced on a SSD as compared to my Western Digital Blue HDD.

Will slowly move more games to my 1TB SSD.
*
yes, of course.

you can use ram cache for all drives (2 to 4gb each with romex primocache). it's another level of smoothness hehe

Oh ho, Samsung SSD 960 EVO M.2 and Samsung SSD 960 Pro M.2 are available in Jakarta.

Evo is even cheaper than 950 Pro, 500GB for RM1,270.

I am going to buy it soon. Time for an upgrade finally.
*
this is so nice.

i checked lelong just now; there are only 2 sellers over there. retail shops still has no sign of them yet :/

The pro version is around RM1,700 which I think it is a bit too much.

I will just stick to the Evo version.
*
the price is still high now. they are just released.

imo use pro for work; for home/gaming use, 960 evo is one of the best choices now (until competitions take over, or 950 pro drops price) tbh, not many people can actually use up all that speed at home, and we already know for gaming, even sata ssds perform similarly to boost load time.

Wah, you get to use Samsung 950 / 960 Pro for work.

I can't even get them to upgrade this 3 year old laptop with a SSD. Heck, I would even pay for it.
*
only when i am doing work with desktops at home. my laptops are old; running sata ssds only hahaha

for new laptops i still wait for something nice; maybe after all planned upgrades for desktops are completed. actually my laptops are still capable and good enough for work.

edit: rumors said gtx1080 is dropping price in some regions; that should mean one thing: a new card is coming out biggrin.gif

nice! the wait is finally almost over biggrin.gif

QUOTE(goldfries @ Dec 21 2016, 09:37 PM)
And in this world there are still people saying HDD not much different from SSD.

From my experience, games these days load a lot of stuff so SSD is the way to go.
*
when i see comments like that i just skip ahead. i have friends that insist on calling certain ssd models ram-based storage (while a quick search for datasheet immediately revealed that they're flash-based/mlc-based pcie models). i then realized things like facts do not exist in their world. it's best to let them learn by themselves.

Viewnet has stock for Intel 600P, but I decide to wait for Samsung 960EVO instead. (Next monht?)
Read the review about 600P, transfer rate is not as good as 960EVO.
So I stick to my existing old SSD first.
*
yeah it's better to get better options when budget permits.

for normal use, intel 600p is a budget ssd that is much better than sata options if you go 512gb or above, even if the writes are low. however in terms of performance, especially technologies used (nvme in this case) it's really better to get something that make fuller use of it. tbh dropping from peak to almost sata speed after slc cache used up is kind of a turn-off, but it's really ok for normal use if the price is right.

fyi, 600p price is way cheaper than 960 evo/pro, its a fair speed that you get. i'm using 960 pro, 960 evo and 600p on 3 units of latitude E7270, same specs. 960 pro vs evo = not much different if you transferring file below 10gb. basically if you like to transfer file below 10gb, 600p is sufficient enough lol.
*
Nice to hear someone who can share practical comparative results of these units in real world use smile.gif

It all boils down to budget, work purposes, and personal preferences eventually.

yup i bought 600p for myself, 960 pro / evo for my colleagues (they bought those unit in SG) and yeah so we tested the file transfer.

Windows 10 folder = almost 7GB size, 512GB 960 pro around 8 seconds, 500GB 960 evo around 11 seconds, 512GB 600p around 21 seconds.

price war:
512GB 960 PRO = RM1250 (direct convert from SG price, MY price surely +RM250 more later)
500GB 960 EVO = RM950 (direct convert from SG price, MY price surely +RM250 more later)
512GB 600p = RM650 (MY price)

#1 value for money + storage = 960 EVO.
*
that's cheaper than i thought in sg. thanks for the tip biggrin.gif

i use vm for work and they are at least 40gb per set; better options are still those with sustained r/w speeds. for normal use however i think 960evo should be perfect smile.gif

950/960 pro is of 5-year warranty, while 960evo is 3. the only version that has 10-year warranty is 850 pro.

a lot of sellers don't really read specs properly from official sources. it's always better double check to confirm.

edit: off topic: it's finally here; hopefully nvidia's ces 2017 keynotes tomorrow bring us good news about 1080ti

Well to be fair. Doing sales for PC components can also be quite demanding as there are many brands, many models and etc  just for a single product.

I am looking forward to see more competition in the CPU and GPU market. Both Intel and Nvidia have almost dominated the market for a long time. Rooting for the underdog hopefully to bring prices of the components down.
*
yeah i agree that it's not easy to manage sales involving pc components, however i also think it's important for sellers to get at least the key specs right, so that they don't confuse consumers right away.

competition is always good for us consumers. currently gaps between competitors and intel/nvidia is kind of huge, and most consumers will probably continue to choose the sides with better stability and performance. (unless these competitors make something more worthy to have)

nice; thanks for this smile.gif

to think about pcie ssd actually can be obtained at such an affordable price today is kind of cool i must say. a few years ago this thing was only available at enterprise, and they are expensive.

Yup, the price is no longer super expensive like before hence trying to mingle around with m.2 sata / m.2 nvme pcie now
*
i also found used fusion-io pcie 2.0 x4 drives that were about 10k+ in USD per piece a few years ago, but now selling super cheap at ebay. these drives are used, and use old techs, some are like over 1pb written after years of use; but compared to their rated endurance (some up to 10pbw), they're still a good deal. note that these drives are meant for storage only, not as boot drives. (they're unbootable in most cases)

fusion-io was acquired by sandisk.

guys,
sorry if this question a bit silly..

between samsung evo 850 120gb vs Kingston hyperX savage 120gb.

Which one is better? budget is limited for this two only (120gb)

thank you
*
the most obvious difference is 850 evo has 5-year warranty (or 75tbw) while savage has 3 (or 113tbw).

for normal use, longer warranty support might be a good option. (it's not easy to get to 75tbw in 5 years under normal use)

Hai guys, WTA your opinion on Transcend 240GB SSD220S is it any good ? because this ssd is RM309

THanks

for entry-level ssds, the bottom line is that under normal use, it should be better than a typical hdd. from reviews this ssd uses tlc nand, and has a good read speed but a very low write speed. (which should be fine under normal use)

hi,i am new to ssd.....may i ask is this ssd? http://www.gemfive.com/my/pendrive-nano-in...2days-np-30days

wanted to get this, since i using sata2 only..but i read its external ssd..so a bit pening wat it mean
*
it's an external drive. you should look for internal drives, even if you use sata2 only.
