Quite similar to my usage:
I mainly use my Western Digital Blue HDD for games and movies.
My SSD mainly serves as an operating system drive with programs.
I usually move some of the AAA Games to my 240GB SSD when I want to reduce the load time.

I am aligned with your view on that HDD though slow is still useful for archiving.
I am more than happy to continue to use HDD to store photos, movies and etc that are unlikely to be accessed often.
basically the optimal pc setup today is ssd (os, apps, games) +hdd (downloads, data). the system can leverage on their strengths, and they cover each others' weaknesses. I mainly use my Western Digital Blue HDD for games and movies.

optimally we should move storage out of our pc/laptops, e.g. nas or an old computer as file server in a local network, or usb-based external storage (turn it on only when you need it; don't do 24/7), and perform sync/backups regularly. since the pc is a minimalist setup (e.g. 1x or 2x ssd, and/or 1x hdd) it brings many benefits as well, e.g. boot faster (less hardware connected to it); easier to maintain; in such cases as malware attacks, recoveries are much quicker, and you can help prevent most of your data from getting affected.
multiple data backups (especially the important ones, encrypted or not) are always king. no matter how careful we are, shit do happen.
of course hdd is still the better choice for storage.
