Quite similar to my usage:

I mainly use my Western Digital Blue HDD for games and movies.

My SSD mainly serves as an operating system drive with programs.

I usually move some of the AAA Games to my 240GB SSD when I want to reduce the load time.

--

I am aligned with your view on that HDD though slow is still useful for archiving.

I am more than happy to continue to use HDD to store photos, movies and etc that are unlikely to be accessed often.
*
basically the optimal pc setup today is ssd (os, apps, games) +hdd (downloads, data). the system can leverage on their strengths, and they cover each others' weaknesses.

optimally we should move storage out of our pc/laptops, e.g. nas or an old computer as file server in a local network, or usb-based external storage (turn it on only when you need it; don't do 24/7), and perform sync/backups regularly. since the pc is a minimalist setup (e.g. 1x or 2x ssd, and/or 1x hdd) it brings many benefits as well, e.g. boot faster (less hardware connected to it); easier to maintain; in such cases as malware attacks, recoveries are much quicker, and you can help prevent most of your data from getting affected.

multiple data backups (especially the important ones, encrypted or not) are always king. no matter how careful we are, shit do happen.

of course hdd is still the better choice for storage.

I think you forgot about online back-up also (though not much space available from that and usually it is more expensive).

I just bought myself a 1TB Samsung SSD 850 Pro mainly for my AAA games. Couldn't get the Evo version as there was no stock and I didn't want to get the Crucial brand SSD.
*
No I didn't forget about cloud storage. I only use them for storing encrypted data. Because of the limited internet bandwidth here usage is less than good.

Nice for 850 pro smile.gif it should last you for a while.

QUOTE(imbibug @ Nov 23 2016, 10:04 PM)
No. Ssd's can hard brick after a power failure if the FTA table gets corrupted due to power loss, even if it is rare which isn't the case with disks even it is mechanical because of what I talked about.

Current cheaper ssd which cut more corners may be even more susceptible to power loss failures.

That doesn't make any sense. Ssds are supposed to be fast otherwise there wouldn't be a point paying the same amount for about 1000 times less storage capacity.

Then you have no idea about what I'm talking about. This is an issue about tlc voltage drift which affect performance in a very short time. Especially when you say that your only experience and knowledge about tlc is with Samsung's v-nand drives.

The 840evo has a 2nd firmware update since the first fix wasn't successful. The 2nd fix is basically a brute force fix by overwriting the same data on the spot alot more frequently to stop performance degradation.

Yes you get it. We are getting a lower quality product for the same price point.
*
I just come here to share my limited experience and stuff that i have learned about ssd. If i said anything wrong, please correct me. If you think my comments and suggestions are not good enough, please ignore them. I'm fine haha

All in all just pick whatever you think suitable smile.gif

I do agree that samsung's fix for 840evo is not perfect. However i only applied it once. It's been a while and its performance is still good, and its health is still at 100%.

*
Just grab one. Any pc will benefit from ssd. Even an old i3 laptop can be more responsive with it.

I am impatiently waiting for Samsung 960 Pro / Evo to be available here or at Malaysia and keep getting tempted to buy the Samsung 950 Pro.
*
uh? just don't always think about it lol

i think it's cheaper to get it from indonesia (from the price that you shared with us).

The 960 Pro is becoming available here in Australia on the 5th. My plan is to retire the 512gb Samsung 950 PRO sitting on the motherboard and chucking in a 960 PRO.

Going for the 2GB model for yourself?
*
So nice :/

I am going for pro 512gb first too; then wait for 1080ti. Again, patiently :/// the ram part will be later. For now 64gb is still good

I think 1080ti would be able to run 4k @ more than 60fps.

Are you planning to upgrade to 128gb of ram? That is a lot. Considering I am only using 32GB of value ram (which I think is already more than enough).
*
I hope so haha; now i mainly play at 1440p with a 60hz 4k gsync screen. the wait is really no joke. It's been many months :/

Yeah 128gb is my target, so that i can run vms with more ram for each of them. For personal use, 32gb is more than enough. (Value ram or not is not important, the size is)

so whats the best ssd for price within rm250, i think my ssd is dying and i need to act fast..also looking at storage capacity at 256GB

for 240gb-range drives under myr250.00, there is one oem sale thread:

https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4122898

also, it's better to have an ups for your computer if it's a desktop. it's not just your ssd that is at risk.

Can we check the age/power-on of the SSD by plugin into our PC?
*
I'm not sure how to check the exact age of a ssd. I usually use search engines to find out release date, data sheet, etc. However with crystal diskinfo you can check the power-on count and hours.

If my system S.M.A.R.T says my SSD is failing and ask me to backup the files, is it a sign to change SSD cause it can still boot up as normal.

Checked Crystal Disk Mark and it shows my SSD health is at 97%
*
most smart utils (unless otherwise specified) were designed mainly for hdd, not ssd. it's possible that some important attributes were interpreted incorrectly by them. more modern, actively-developed disk information tools like smartctl (part of smartmontools), hdd guardian (gui for smartctl; https://hddguardian.codeplex.com/), or crystal diskinfo can provide more accurate results. however the best way to determine your ssd's health is still using ssd tool set provided by the ssd manufacturer. (if they cannot tell us the true ssd status of their ssd, i don't know what else can)

to be safe, yes back up data regularly.

Hi guys,

Is Crucial MX300 performance equivalent or slightly lower compare to samsung Evo?

In amazon.ca, they're selling approx RM1060 for 1TB. Tempting to get 1 b4 Christmas.

Using it for programming & gaming, computer on 24/7, probably a lot disk read & write.
*
there is a relatively significant performance gap between crucial mx300 and samsung 850 evo technically, but for normal use, including programming and gaming, i think it's good enough.

Hmmm, have to wait a few months.

Hopefully, early January, I will need to reformat my PC soon though.
*
yeah haha i hope so too

just reformatted mine last weekend; also took sm951 out of pcie adapter, cleaned the chips with alcohol and applied a little thermal paste on them; so far it never exceed 40c under my workloads (usually stay around 36c); will change the thermal pad as well when new ssd is available.

All master sifus , right now any recommended ssd ? prefer ~250gb with budget <RM400.
Just to upgrade my laptop speed as the hdd's speed is killing me already T.T
The only game i play is dota 2 anyway so 250gb is pretty sufficient.

NOTE : It would be greatly appreciate if any recommended and trusted seller's links is provided ! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

check out garage sales here; there are plenty of good deals there for 240gb range sata ssds. (some are of professional grade too)

edit: just do cod if you're not comfortable.
