Cheap filter better than no filter. If your sponge filters are on the way, you can change to this when you receive them.

I use a HOB filter and only turn it off once a month to give it a wash. Apparently it's not good to turn off your filter for long periods as your beneficial bacteria will start to die and disrupt your tank's nitrogen cycle.

btw, sifus, can share the oto catfish image? I dun wan to buy the wrong fish again.
Is it the same name as Cory catfish/Dwarf Corydoras?

Sifu, the purpose for me to get oto is to clean my algae, does it means oto wont clean so well as compare to SAE?

I visit a aqua shop in taman desa yesterday, i bought few lava rock, coral, a stone (rm9/KG), and ph tester from them, they give me a lot of advice, and they have plenty of aqua plant, very nice shop to visit, stayed there for almost 2 hours to chit chat after work.

I am waiting for their ADA soil to arrive, so i can start my own aqua plant.....

and they have oto fish

there's always something that generate algae. try to look for the root cause of it. be it lightning too much, or feeding too much.. etc before introducing a CUC, do research what type of algae they eat first before purchasing.

Also SAE tend to be less useful when they adult or when they know how to take ready food.

anyone got experience with kuhli loaches and black eel like loaches?

apprently i bought 2 kuhli and 3 black loaches.

endup one week, water stink like crap, 3 black loaches MIA, one kuhli loach found in filter become dinosaur bone and one left hiding around.

Sifus, any specific name for the black color catfish that I own? They seem do nothing and only stick on my glass.

New into this aquarium and wanna share about my attempt to set up this tank ystd. Went to nsk kuchai to buy the materials which are flourite sand 1kg, amazonia soil 5kg (used roughly 4kg), HC x 1, rotala rotundifolia green rotala sp vietnam one each, and ludwigia sp super red. Thought starting this hobby would only cost around rm50-80 but I was wrong haha. I have a 1.5 ft tank, driftwood, led light and HOB.

Was told to wash the flourite before adding amozonia soil but I totally forgot it. Was to excited to set up the tank. But I guess there's no way for me wash it after adding all the soil so I just left it as it is.

This afternoon I did water change because there seems to be alot impurities floating the water. And I did not release the bubbles when I first soak the substrate so I did one round of bubble releasing though there are still bubbles trapped in the substrate. I added a buddha face for decoration, moved the hc and replanted some of the plants as floats up again. I have a bad feeling of the plants surviving. Did not turn on the HOB as the current is too strong and disrupts the setup in tank so probably will not use HOB.

Currently there no fauna in the tank yet except for one or two snails. Read earlier in the thread to BUNUH without mercy but I still left it there. Or should I just remove it now haha.

I am aiming for a lowtech tank or better yet, a close to self sustaining tank. Will add in my betta and maybe otto and shrimps. Not sure whether this is realistic or not.

Just bought 6 CAE + 2 male guppies for test run. (Heard bad things about CAE  )

1.  That LFS guy suggest this fish. I thought is SAE/Oto but after going back home, closely look it was CAE.

Wonder how to catch that little sneaky rascal CAE fish in my tank.

They are very laju and cilok-cilok.

2. Any suggestion CO2 set at JB area?

3. For 2.5 feet tank, is it better to use canister filter?

This hobby seriously need a high level of your patience.

i had 10 fish in my tank of 35cm wide. its overcrowded so i decided to change water every 4 days. every time change water one fish died. now has only 8 fish. all fish are tiger bard mix with albino tiger barb. there is nothing in the tank except for sponge filter. I changed 30% water change first and than 45% water change on the second time. What is wring here? anyone can help.

yes i mix anti chlorine to the new water in the pail first and than leave it for 5 minutes. than only use it to change water from the fish tank.

on the first time change water i change only about 30% fish tank water.
on the second time change water (4 days later) i change almost half of the tank water. I though the fish died on the first time because too much toxin in the water. so this time I change a bit more water. I use tap water which has a water filter outside of the house.

yah, what i mean is can i buy a sponge from the lfs's stable tank, then i stick air pump into it. i don't know if they sell that.

For me, stone and driftwood is the last thing to choose if you on budget...   

Stone : RM 8 ~ 12 per kg
Driftwood : Got grade you can choose

I've been to Aquacult Studio at Damansara Perdana. Have plenty of driftwood to choose and you can make bonzai and can choose what plant/moss to attach it. Small bonzai RM 200++.

Aquaparadise at Bangi also have a lot. These 2 shop only that I explore.
