Dear cat experts, is it a wise choice for me to buy a cat for my retired mother?

1. Recommended type of cat? Or just kidnap a young'un from the streets mafia style.

2. How hard is it to potty train a cat? Is it just buy litterbox, plug & play? Is it something that's already hardwired in the cat's brain litterbox = shit & pee there.

3. Is it safe? ie. will cat suddenly go batshit insane and be a wolverine wannabe?, because i won't be at her house every single day, anything i need to be aware of leaving a cat alone with my mom?

4. Is a cat a good companion?

5. The house is a semi-d with a large plot of land and very empty 3story interior since only my mother/maid is living there, will the large area be a benefit to the cat?

Asking before I go and get any cats since i think it's a responsibility where i need to know more about it first.

I recommend going to a shelter WITH YOUR MOTHER and adopting one. The volunteers should be able to match you with a cat that has the appropriate personality to suit your mom.

2. How hard is it to potty train a cat? Is it just buy litterbox, plug & play? Is it something that's already hardwired in the cat's brain litterbox = shit & pee there.
Cats instinctively know how to use the litterbox, due to the natural instinct to bury their waste. This is why, when they start eliminating outside the box, the first step is to take them to the vet to rule out medical issues before tackling behavior.

3. Is it safe? ie. will cat suddenly go batshit insane and be a wolverine wannabe?, because i won't be at her house every single day, anything i need to be aware of leaving a cat alone with my mom?
Where the heck did you get that idea? Cats who do that have a reason for doing so, usually territorial issues because they see another cat on their property. Otherwise, that is a very very low possibility.

4. Is a cat a good companion?
Yes they are great companions, with their various personalities. This is why I recommend you go to a shelter WITH YOUR MOTHER to find a suitable cat for her needs and lifestyle.

5. The house is a semi-d with a large plot of land and very empty 3story interior since only my mother/maid is living there, will the large area be a benefit to the cat?
I don't recommend letting your cat out, due to a very much shorter average lifespan, but that seems to be common in Malaysia. Cats don't actually need large xy area. Even a small xy area is fine, but there must be a lot of z - as in height.

Asking before I go and get any cats since i think it's a responsibility where i need to know more about it first.
ANY pet is a lot of responsibility. I am of the opinion that a pet is for life.

Thanks, that answered most of my concern (duh i never thought to bring my mom to choose, should have thought of that... and also the cat/animal shelter part)

What do you mean cat needs alot of height? I dont think you mean 1st floor and 2nd floor indoor right, but more towards buying those fancy cat furniture from pet store? Since those are quite tall.

Cats prefer a higher "spot"? As of right now the house only is occupied in the ground floor with no plan to use any other floor for my elderly convenience's sake. There is only basic furniture(sofa, dining,tv,chair etc) with a whole lot of empty non-carpeted floor showing, so to welcome a new cat, i need to get 3-4 of those tall cat furniture and place them around?

Cats like to climb, and survey their territory from a higher perspective. It would be best if they have their own furniture, so you can direct their scratching away from your mom's furniture. You don't need 3 or 4, just one maybe two if you have the space.

Welcoming a cat into your home means preparation. You need to have litterboxes (general rule is one per cat plus one, so if you have one cat, you should have two boxes), non-plastic food and water bowls, and places for them to sit/climb like their own furniture and maybe their own beds. Keep the food and water apart (some cats don't like their water right next to their food) and definitely away from their litterboxes (You wouldn't eat and drink next to the toilets, would you?). Make sure the cat has toys and stimulation, otherwise it can become destructive due to boredom.

I don't cage my cats at all, but there are some here who do. Cats don't do well in very small areas.

It seems like a lot to take in, but trust me, it's worth it. A pet is a great companion, but you (your mom) must also cater to its needs.

Also, I highly recommend visiting http://jacksongalaxy.com/. He's a cat behaviorist with many great tips and tricks to owning a happy cat smile.gif

awesome companions! though i feel a single cat tends to be more attach to his/her human. my 1st cat was the lone cat in the condo for 5 months before i got another kitten companion for her.

by then she was already very attached to me and would come and sit on my lap and follows me watch movie or play games
my little one at first pee/poo whenever she felt like. maybe too young and couldn't hold her bladder. after a while she started using the litter box as well and starts to bury her pee/poo

i do cage my 2 kittens when i am not at home and at night while i am sleeping but otherwise they are free to roam the condo. if you plan to cage your cats, you may want place the cage where they can see outside at birds etc. or have another kitten companion for her. and if you do plan to cage the cats, try get a big one, like 3 story cage. they dont cost alot and it at least has a high vantage point for them to sleep

Use water spray to train. 8 yr old still young.

Talking about training, my cat knows how shake my hand when i give her treats
She loves her vitamin.

Spraying water is generally frowned upon these days.

A cat that is 8 years or older is considered a senior cat.

Has her eating habits changed with her regular cat food? It is also a good idea to have a covered trash can.

did you ever give her human food? Because it's generally a bad idea.

Negative reinforcement is the last (but cheaper) method to train your cat. Positive reinforcement on the other hand, requires time and money.

Since you're away from home, maybe you can ask your mother to spray water but not directly to your cat (maybe at the bin) everytime she approach the garbage bin.

Make sure to pujuk her after that with some treats. biggrin.gif

A good way of training your cat to eat her food again is to sit by her when she's eating.

But then again, personalities and adaptation phase differ from cat to cat.

Good luck! smile.gif
