Hi guys and girls,
for those who has a AKG headphone maybe you can share the experience you have.
we have grado and sennheiser, but i like to make a AKG fan club as well.

i just got my AKG K601 as i could not afford the K701. so much nicer the 701

anyway this was difficult to decide between AKG K601 and Sennheiser HD 600.

but in the end i felt that aKG fair better in my ears compare with the HD 600.

im not saying hd 600 not good but, hd 600 has its points but i did like the dynamicness of the sennheiser but got tired after listening to it for a while.

dont know why. but akg seems to sound smoother, maybe due to the sound staging.

i tried out almost any kind of music i can find in the shop.

test was with a cyruss preamp and with a micromega cd player as the source.

sound between 2 headphones were really close but certain thing like bass attack in the sennheiser was much better, this i must say, in term of detail i still felt that the akg is much better, bass was tight and vocal on the akg was much more natural.,

the sennheiser had much a louder sound but it does gives good impact on music.

on the clasiccal music, you might think that the hd 600 fair much better, i agree with that but sound like the hd 600 is not as natural as the akg.

well this is my first reference level headphone and had just love to fall inlove with it.

kind of difficult to drive compare to my grado sr 60, but definately sound much much better.

i got mine K601 at rm 1300, and the 701 cost about RM 2K

the 701 comes with a better packing, and i have checked and compared with the 601, 701 goes 2 hz lower. i think should have more other small small things used in.

the difference is really huge. couldnt afford the 701 yet

I buy online from US, almost at your price of 601. . Quite reluctant to tell u the thruth. Did u bargain?

saw some K701 selling at headfi for around US$250-270 mark. RM2k seems really marked up. curious to try the AKG sound but am hesitating to pull the trigger!

bargain also how much can get, rm 400 discount, the selling price is at rm 1600 leh, unless i kena konn lah.

but if compare to internet, of course lah, i didnt try b4 and not my style also leh. i like to buy tangible things. dont mind paying extra

you should try it out, the sound is really natural, staging is good, bass is not bad deep and tight,
not as noisy as sennheiser. gives me the headache after listening too long.

anyway sudah beli akg, kind of loving it, cant wait till my ld 2 + to arrive next 2 weeks and that i think will be even better.

my grado only require a quarter on my sb audigy but the akg requires 3/4 of the volume level to sound right.

i think need some push.

I have a K340 that needs an amp but even without the amp the soundstage it produces is quite impressive.

701 quite choosey on source, they will not make bad record sound good. Have paired ld3 with 701, does not like it instantly, feel it eat up detail. Anyway vocal was brilliant.
Tube amp does add organic feel to hp compare to SS amp.

I guess 601 need lot of burn in time, heard from review the sound not "come out" till few hundred hours.

sonyman, u really should practice some open-door policy(as in attempt internet sales once in a while) for your future purchases hehehe

I got my K701 around the price for your K601. Local dealers can rip you off real bad for certain items.
The K701 takes quite long to run in before the pleasant stuff surface so have patience towards the K601 as I suppose the family traits are not too far off from each other.

anyway i just didnt expect to buy it at all, just drop by the hifi shop and saw the 601, asked for the 701 but the price wasnt right, told the shop that the 701 is selling at rm 1300 on the internet, but he said u believe a not, anyway i had stayed in the shope for 4 hours, and the 4 hours really paid off between senn and akg,

glad there are many akg users there, wether reference or entry level, everyone owns a akg. yeah!

Well, K701 is just starting to show some of its colours but at times, I simply prefer some fun-sounding phones (maybe simple grados, ksc75, philips 805) for leisure. The K701 offers that serious, flat accuracy that brings on a reference sound quality but unfortunately, sometimes I am just not in the mood for reference listening.

A guy from headfi did mention that you should run them in for 1000 hours before they bloom, but seriously did the AKG team run them in for 1000+ hours before saying "Yeah, that's the sound sig we wanted to hear, lets start production guys".....I would guess the team probably listen to them straight up or maybe after a day/or two of running in before they decided to mod or settle for the final driver/assembly....in the industry like any other, time is essence/money....production must not take too long to start....1000 hrs is definately a no-no each time they come up with a modified h/phone driver...anyway, just my $0.02......

I bought a 701 on Coobra's behalf from TTVJ and it cost <RM1300 shipped to msia. But the 701's price has increased since then(new unit). I know there's no point saying this now, but if you really want some good equipment and dont mind used...you should start learning to buy from the net.. those hd6x0 are DIRT CHEAP nowadays...you can probably get them for like only RM800+, or even less, shipped to msia for used pair.

next time when i get my 701 sure from the internet.

I'm the poorest here. Just have the humble k81dj bought in singapore. I will never ever buy from asia sound cuz they really mark up to unreasonable prices.

1. all this while i thought that the 701 cost only rm 1200 at asia sound which is still within my budget. if like this then 325i loh it seem.

2. my headamp is only the little dot micro, which is not even here yet... hehehee! and akg is famous for its hard to drive driver... little dot 3 also not nice loh imagine the micro... another reason to 325i.

KL to Singapore is not really far. unless you are from Penang... then it's seriously far.

i used to take a night train where i can sleep 10.30pm, reaching there at 7am... after immigration and stuffs, stepped into singapore at 8am, just nice for 2 half boiled eggs and teh O'. then take the 10.15pm night train back to KL on that same day.

crazy? that's what my friends said everytime i do this trip. buy the returns ticket at KL Sentral and it cost me less than RM 100 only.

Actually, all the ones I bought, all ask my sis to bring in for me since she study in sg and I study in subang. When go back to hometown then I collect from her. Great arrangement! But since delivery so easy, bad for my wallet...

If you are contemplating selling ur sr60 before/after you got ur 701....suggest you dont do it the sr60 is still an enjoyable phone...unless you intend to replace the sr60 with the ksc75

coz the thing is i am thinking that there is no point for me to get a really good headphones as i am using my ipod (line out) and a headamp only... SR-60 is good enough for me. but then again, that was what i said when i had my phillip 890. until i tried the sr-60.

WRONG!!! I don't own the 701... i pinjam only but i do own the K240s and HD650

The K240 is a midrange phone (IIRC used to be their flagship) and is considered a classic phone coz it has been around for a long time. It was kind of the monitering headphone for musicians in the recording studio in the past. The "s" version was a later revision to cut down the highish 600 Ohm to 55 Ohm impedence.

As usual it has the classic midrange of AKG but the highs and bottom end are abit rounded off. It sounds better to me if you mod the stock to silver cable but then again it's nowhere near the HD650 or K701

still enjoying the 701 for the long future... i think AKG did a good job with 701...

Hey..there is different between mortal shop/ttvj online shop. From asia sound u got local waranty and have been taxed by malaysia gov.

Buy from ttvj is like "water good".Hard to claim waranty. You have to bear the risk.

He normally offer a better pricea fter u email him than what he show on web or else he might lose the dealership. Please dun question asia sound and compare to ttvj for the sake of welfare of all headfier. Todd is very nice guy. Eh..ya first time buyer got discount coupon, use it.

Yalor, like what the rest advise, it's wiser not to shoot them buggers at Asia Sound, just learn the lesson and be "sing dit" in future when surveying for headphone

Letting them know might raise some issues with AKG, although of course they aren't as sensitive as Grados. And TBH, Alex from Asia Sound already knows if I'm not mistaken.....

It will make no difference whether he raise the issue or not. Different distro set prices differently, you can even sell at MSRP without problem..they dont have to sell it to you for less at the first place. What'd you think local dealers could do? tell AKG distro about it? then what AKG distro would do? Tell the US branch about it? and what'd the USD branch do? ask the dealers not to advertise their selling price and do it discreetly, which is what they are doing now. The only thing that is definitely going to happen is....they will tell u what i just said..."you want a RM1300 K701? fly to the states n get it" and you'd be labelled as a rat..nothing else will change.

It's not surprised headphone in Msia is overly priced(Grado i think quite resaonably priced). It's a norm every audio related stuff in this land is expensive.

As 701 case, the price here already make it unaffordable hp for average malaysian.

For me, i dun think local distributor can offer anything extra except waranty. They are not even interested in marketing headphone. For me I tired of open my mouth to reduce the price. See they offer you rm400 discount for 601. Imagine how much mark up there. Our hp community is not big enough.

So bear with it or leave it.

he takes both...credit card will be better and easier...there were some hassles with paypal payments last time. But if you pay with paypal, you might save some money depending on the % ur credit card company charges you on currency exchange. Paypal only charge a fixed 2.5% fee....for me, im indifferent between using CC n pypal, they both charge the same rate

i still recommend to get ur audiophile headphones in SG...hehe..

i emailed a US site 2 days ago, the price for 701 is USD 244.42, but cannot ship outsite US. They said they can ship to a US address and ask the person to ship to u.

well todd is a very "caring" dealer. helped us to underdeclare our 701 to let it went thru....

the day my 701 arrives... it was the first time i got something so big directly to my house

it's the northen sound lights dealer as stated on head-fi. USD244 is really very cheap. Try to ask todd to match him..not sure if he will do it tofr international...but give it a shot!

well im actually testing my k 601 with a marantz integrated amp pm 43, i very old model, black one, has a headphone output, i just forgeotten that it has a headphone output untill just now while driving home.

now testing it with the regular music that i have been listening through the soundcard.

man this 601 sure does perform well with the correct amplification. i havent heard with the ld 2 + maybe when i free i drop by in yeah_guyz place and test run it.

not bad for a 601, i m also proud.

The 325i is better than the SR60, u must visit Music by design and they will let you try both, no need to buy (unless u get poisoned stat)....but of course the improvement won't be day & nite but obvious enough for seasoned ears.

BTW, u mentioned u spent 4k on room acoustics, but why so much when youuse mainly headphones (in your sig)? Unless u got some AV gear heading up

the testing site in MBD kl or singapore ?

i also got some hifi gear. tubes and floor stander.
the headphones are in kl, but the hifi is in a dedicated room in my hometown house.

the downstairs utility room got converted into the audio room.
and the system is years old liau, complete with vinyl and cd player.
loads of software. but the sound is still ok for me at the moment, still need a lot of improvement.

power source is quiet now compare to last time, and sounds much smoother.

Just auditioned K601 at Asia Sound today (no chance to try K701.. Asia Sound's showroon is now at City Square, same floor as Music By Design/MDB, d ampang park tenant agreement due in Dec 06, fyi)

Afterwards......since quite free today ...went to MDB to try out Grado 325....

Er....design and comfort wise...AKG lah...(no contest)

Soundwise (after spending 2 hrs here and there)..I like d Grado better...(sorry la sonyman....no harm intended here), just my dua sen. 325 has more clarity, the music has more "body" (not good in describing them), in simple words,music in 325 is more "alive" to me....but d earpad, aduh...really "pressure" d ears lah (one can change the pad to grado sr60 style though for more comfy)

AKG costs RM1260.00 @ Asia Sound (ask for Sierra) and Grado 325 costs RM1070 (MDB @ after discount...ask for Simon - nice fella la)

Pls take note...itu only my pendapat la....others taste differ individually, of course.

(too bad..couldn't try out AKG701 and sennheiser 600, hmmm, that would be nice..er right ah dinodog?)
