QUOTE(flurkoneko @ May 10 2012, 11:43 PM) Yeap, I must say that its pretty damn good. And the filter swapping really changes the sound too. The bass from the dynamic drivers and the mids and highs from the BA are very coherent. The bass impact from teh dynamic driver is not like traditional dynamic drivers such as the IE8 where the bass is dark and aggressive, but complements the mids and highs from the BA's and they sound really good. Are they worth the Rm4xxx price tag? They do sound 'special' but i would still stick to my Westone ES5 customs for less then the asking price of the K3003. |

Just got back from downtown Tokyo, specifically Akihabara. Went to the Head-Fi renowned e-earphone store, got myself this:
![]() AKG-K550. Auditioned it in Yodobashi Akihabara, price after tax refund was Yen 27,480. Walked a few blocks to e-earphones, they're selling Yen24,800. I tested this against the Ultrasone Signature Pro and the uber high end Ultrasone Edition 8 at Yodobashi, sure there is a difference, but after the two flagship headphones I have in my possession, I'm not willing to go for another flagship. Plus, this is for walking around, not home use. Very isolating. |

Notice all these headphones are closed-end headphones.
In terms of difference in price: AKG K550 = Yen 24,800 Ultrasone Signature Pro = Yen 89,000 Ultrasone Edition 8 Palladium = Yen 127,800 Do the Yen to RM at your own risk of price tag shock. As for the sound, the law of diminishing returns applies. Sure the Signature Pro and the Edition 8 sounds better, but not to the extent that I'd like to pay for to get that kind of sound. It sounds better than the AKG K550, but not THAT much better that I'd be willing to pay that much more to get it. Better soundstage, details, resolution, and in the case of Edition 8, improvements across the mids, highs and lows. I'm planning to use the K550 on the go, so as much as I'd like to have the best, I wouldn't appreciate the best while being outside walking around with it. Plus, I don't want my head lopped off for thieves to steal the Edition 8 off my head. |

QUOTE(E1 - AKG @ Jun 4 2012, 11:21 PM) Always insist on the warranty card by authorised local distributor IMS to avoid fakes I would echo what Tyll of InnerFidelity and Mike of HEadfonia says about the headphone. The mids sounds dangerous close to being recessed, but in actual fact they are not. It just not as full-bodied as the other cans I have in my possession. Very revealing, resolving and coupled with my RX MK3-B and its bass boost, enough bass punch to my liking. Not as much as the D2000, but much more controlled and tighter. Build quality is SUPERB, it looks handsome and sturdy as well. The most important thing about the K550 is you must make sure the fitting is done properly. Any improper fit will result in audio regressing to sounding thin and harsh. I had to bring the cups forward and tilt it in towards my inner ear to get a good seal and proper fit to isolate nicely as well as getting the supposed sound signature. The headband is extremely comfortable, I had a listening session on the plane back from Tokyo this afternoon, I literally slept with the headphones on it, and not felt it. Supremely comfortable. Added on June 4, 2012, 11:25 pm Any in-depth review on the AKG K550 to be expected ![]() For the price I paid for it, this is a better headphones than my previous D2000. I needed a headphone that is isolating, full circumaural and sounds as good as either my DT1350 or my previous D2000. I believe that search is over.
