will the Maxis Broadband & Maxis unlimited 120 package share the same network?
that day, maxis broadband sent 2 technicians to my office to find out/solve the connecting problem for me, they told me "yes".......sure or not? rclxub.gif

I think same network. but u can do more with 120 package.
120 can do BT (no time limit/duration), no capping at 3GB,

Do they share the same network - Yes

What are the differences - The Unlimited data package has no caps. You get a direct IP to the Internet. There is no smart ZTE router that blocks torrent etc. On the other hand the modem supports 3.6Mbps (I heard it can support up to 14.4Mbps with a firmware upgrade). On the other hand most phones only support speeds up to 1.8Mbps (at the most 3.6Mbps)

Well , so far it looks good. Its far better then JARING when it comes to upload. At this moment I can get around 100-200Kbps upload (if I place the modem near the window). I can still get around 50-60Kbps (if its inside my house). As for the download , I can get 80%+ of the subscribed speed at all times (and sometimes even more). But then it really slows down during the night (maybe its because they allow p2p during the night) , but then the latency is consistent and stable , which is well a good news for me. The drawbacks you ask. Well there are a lot

Firstly , you don't get full control of that modem. Maxis automatically blocks and unblocks port for you. In other words you can't host a gaming server , HTTP Server , Torrentflux server or p2p. Its all nat'ed and at sharp 1 in the morning its all opened and you can freely p2p at amazing gila-gila speed (roughly around 80-120Kilobytes/sec) till 6 in the morning (fair deal). After that it will be at 0KB/s (even though the client can connect to seeders/peers it will be at 0). Fair enough I say. Next up , the problem lies with Maxis itself. I dont trust Maxis 100% on their charges. They love to play tricks (they certainly do have lot of tricks up their sleeves) and try to lure you into something. Oh they should improve their International Links. Accessing websites that are located out of Malaysia takes ages to load. I've to use a local proxy to get decent speeds. I did not have any sort of 'International' Link Problem with JARING (Unless of course there is a major "outbreak").

Look at the latency. Its amazing. I am downloading python and my friends are playing World of Warcraft and DOTA on our local servers. Its still amazing. Oh yeah they do suffer minor lag spikes (Streamyx users will not face minor lag spikes as their latency to local servers are less then 100 ms). So I think its good enough. Oh yeah you can forget about playing MMORPG on international servers.

good review prasys. I used to try out 120 package, and I was very impressed with the latency to local servers. Being used to DIGI edge latency which is a horrible 550 -850ms, I got a nice surprise to note 150ms latency ! this is DEFINITELY much better than Dial Up. I was able to play DOTA too on Maxis rclxms.gif

Another cool thing about 120 package is people can still contact me through my 3G handphone while it was being used as a modem. I can surf and talk over my 3G phone at same time. It gives me the feel of ADSL with data/voice capability.

The only downside I could say about 120 package is the 3G signal tend to be very weak indoors and I can just be roamed into their GPRS network if 3G gets too weak. ah, with GPRS you know the latency to expect = 500 + ms.

And of course, the price is a bit dear at 120.

lastly, I feel Maxis network management is at par with Jaring. The fact that they block bit torrent from 6am to 12am shows that the network engineers at least have the common sense to manage their network bandwidth well. well thought-over policy I would say.

Finally returned the somaport (bye-bye JARING , love you...You'll be always in my heart no matter what)

To your question : Yes its possible. You can share via a router. The Modem itself acts a router for your information. I'm using WRT54G + Maxis broadband

allow me to clarify something on the charges on the maxis wireless broadband, since i'm a freelance agent for a certain retailer which specializes in maxis products.

Anyways, I'm sure you heard of the "384" and the "768" package. They are priced at RM68 and RM98 respectively.

However, the real charges are at following

1st time charge (included in the 1st month bill) would be:

RM100 (Activation)
RM50 (Installation)
First month bill = Depending on which package.

Let's say you take the RM68. Add in 5% Govt tax, you'll get RM71.40. Then, because the first month's bill also comes along with a "itemized billing, you'll also be charged that, hence the first month's bill would be RM 75.xx (unless you cancel the itemized billing for the subsequent months). You need to call in and tell them that you would want to cancel the itemized billing before they do so.

Oh, one more thing. If you don't want to have the phone package bundled, its also advised that you cancel it early, and return the phone unit to Maxis from right after the delivery of 1st month bill to the end of the delivery of the 5th month bill.

But you'll still get it, during installation.

And be warned, Maxis do not entertain applications above 5th floors, for very good reasons.

edit: typo.

for the phone service, the standard home plan is waived for the first 6 month. Even in idle mode, the moment after the 5th / 6th bill comes forward, you'll have to pay the monthy fee.

That is, you have the option to choose from 2 plans:

The voice plan:
http://www.maxis.com.my/personal/hsdpa/wireless_packages.asp

Please remember, in addition to the RM71.40, the Rm15 is applicable if you do not delete it after the first 6 months. Of course, if you're interested in using the phone, i'll recommend the Home Plan 38 (for obvious heavy usage comparisons)

I'll see what else I can help with. Meanwhile, feel free to ask any questions, be it technical or structural in nature, I'll try my best to answer even though I have only very little knowledge about the entire modem and the systems run by Maxis.

My Maxis wireless 768 speed seems to be deteriorating day by day. When i first subscribe it, it can reach 170kB/s. Now only max 110kB/s.

And they seems to change to 3 type of packages now. Now mine is power package. Wonder how can i get the modem show on their page. it looks really nice. And the power package shows can reach 3.6Mbps, which means 400kB/s. Now my speed is only a quarter of it.

What is ur speed guys?

Whats wrong with that. You're getting what you're paying for what. They have just capped the line so that its fair for the rest

According to maxis when i first apply, 768kbps is the minimum speed it can achieved. Max is 1.5mbps. I think they changed the rule. Now the service is on best effort basis as shown on the web.. Feel like getting cheated.

Anyway, did anyone get to use the maxis broadband mail? When i access it, it shows
"You have not activated your mail box. Please activate before login again"

May I know, as a freelance agent, which Maxis retailer gave you such a joke? True that there are many jokers around, but this is definitely one of the extreme ones I've not heard in quite some time.

Even if one subscribes and uses it in Maxis tower (the one near KLCC) the technicians CANNOT guarentee a 768kbps minimum.

On best effort basis, Maxis aims to give minimum efficiency of 70-80% (unspoken, not written at least), although yes, that is based on BEST EFFORT BASIS. In terms of signal strength, are you very far from your nearest node? How high is the elevation? Is there a clear sight of the station? what is the altitude difference between your modem and the station? All of these comes into factors when one really wants to know what's wrong with the speed.

As freelance agents, given all criterias are set, the lowest one would achieve is 650-670kbps, and the highest is 1.5Mbps (again like i stressed, given all criterias are set)

For the Maxis mailbox, go to www.maxis.com.my and register your mailbox over there. Its a new feature that has just been launched.
