allow me to clarify something on the charges on the maxis wireless broadband, since i'm a freelance agent for a certain retailer which specializes in maxis products.

Anyways, I'm sure you heard of the "384" and the "768" package. They are priced at RM68 and RM98 respectively.

However, the real charges are at following

1st time charge (included in the 1st month bill) would be:

RM100 (Activation)
RM50 (Installation)
First month bill = Depending on which package.

Let's say you take the RM68. Add in 5% Govt tax, you'll get RM71.40. Then, because the first month's bill also comes along with a "itemized billing, you'll also be charged that, hence the first month's bill would be RM 75.xx (unless you cancel the itemized billing for the subsequent months). You need to call in and tell them that you would want to cancel the itemized billing before they do so.

Oh, one more thing. If you don't want to have the phone package bundled, its also advised that you cancel it early, and return the phone unit to Maxis from right after the delivery of 1st month bill to the end of the delivery of the 5th month bill.

But you'll still get it, during installation.

And be warned, Maxis do not entertain applications above 5th floors, for very good reasons.

edit: typo.

for the phone service, the standard home plan is waived for the first 6 month. Even in idle mode, the moment after the 5th / 6th bill comes forward, you'll have to pay the monthy fee.

That is, you have the option to choose from 2 plans:

The voice plan:
http://www.maxis.com.my/personal/hsdpa/wireless_packages.asp

Please remember, in addition to the RM71.40, the Rm15 is applicable if you do not delete it after the first 6 months. Of course, if you're interested in using the phone, i'll recommend the Home Plan 38 (for obvious heavy usage comparisons)

I'll see what else I can help with. Meanwhile, feel free to ask any questions, be it technical or structural in nature, I'll try my best to answer even though I have only very little knowledge about the entire modem and the systems run by Maxis.

According to maxis when i first apply, 768kbps is the minimum speed it can achieved. Max is 1.5mbps. I think they changed the rule. Now the service is on best effort basis as shown on the web.. Feel like getting cheated.

Anyway, did anyone get to use the maxis broadband mail? When i access it, it shows
"You have not activated your mail box. Please activate before login again"

May I know, as a freelance agent, which Maxis retailer gave you such a joke? True that there are many jokers around, but this is definitely one of the extreme ones I've not heard in quite some time.

Even if one subscribes and uses it in Maxis tower (the one near KLCC) the technicians CANNOT guarentee a 768kbps minimum.

On best effort basis, Maxis aims to give minimum efficiency of 70-80% (unspoken, not written at least), although yes, that is based on BEST EFFORT BASIS. In terms of signal strength, are you very far from your nearest node? How high is the elevation? Is there a clear sight of the station? what is the altitude difference between your modem and the station? All of these comes into factors when one really wants to know what's wrong with the speed.

As freelance agents, given all criterias are set, the lowest one would achieve is 650-670kbps, and the highest is 1.5Mbps (again like i stressed, given all criterias are set)

For the Maxis mailbox, go to www.maxis.com.my and register your mailbox over there. Its a new feature that has just been launched.

maxis on paper terms do not allow subscribers above 5th floor (if you're on 5th floor its still okay)

Note, that depends on the location, but on paper, no.

When it comes to building heights, the topography comes in.

Let's say you stay in a hilly area. And the base station is based on a ground. The issue here is that while you may be staying below the 5th floor, the fact is that the range and the conditions of the topography may be in such an awkward position such as where you're equivalent to a 20th floor.

Not getting the idea? Okay, just imagine the base station is on 1m above sea level. You're in penang, and some of the condos are high up on the hills. let's say you stay on ground level 5. True, but when you look around from the building, you easily surpass even any other lvl 20 building. That becomes an issue, unless you live near a node, and have a very clear L.O.S (Line of Sight), then you're within the "prescribed nominal" conditions.

Then again, check your modem if it has downgraded to EDGE connection. EDGE, being a 2.75G, can still best UTMS speed given proper conditions, but then again its subject to the traffic at GSM. 3G runs on a different infrastructure.

With the new Super Saver plan from Maxis, I'm not surprised that their GSM network is congested to near full capacity.

One of the ways is to check your gateway access, and go to your self portal (and check if you're on UTMS / HSDPA / EDGE / GPRS.

Upload is always 25-35% of the download speed. Judging from yours, your upload is nominal compared to the downloads you're getting (as per on the spot)

@ GTO:

which reseller sold you? As far as I know, Gombak is not even in the list yet. Only near future we'll cover with 3.5G. I'll have to check my list. For others who wants to subscribe, I'll suggest that you go to www.maxis.com.my/bb and check the area coverage for wireless by key-ing in the street address number.

If you're not in the list, you can ask me, and i'll double check (since i do keep a copy of the list, the up to date one)

Then again, if you're not in the list, then for sure your area is not covered YET.

Do you have any idea where to get the complete coverage list ?
*
Erm, the list is not to be released to the public, as far as I'm told. However, I'm allowed to refer to the list to help you out. Please mind that I'm supposed to be doing sales and stuffs like that (which I won't, considering I'm only a freelance agent that only wants to share what-so-ever experiences that I have).

@riku2replica:
Yes. As long as there's Maxis coverage, then there will be Maxis line. For 3G however, its a slightly different case because the ZTE modem comes with a signal booster, whilst I'm not so sure of the new USB Modem. Better yet, we often advise our potential customers to try running around with their 3G phones and check for the signal before applying.

@GTOForce:

Hmm. I can't help much, but if you PM me your street address (just the jalan only) i'll double check. Then I try to see what may have went wrong.

In regards to the selling broadbands, yes. Its agents who do it. However, I would kindly remind that even the WBB counter in Maxis KLCC (the small green counter) is not directly owned by Maxis, but also by another retailer. That's the retailer that I'm working with currently as a freelance agent. So please make sure of the offers given by retailers are checked thoroughly.

@ruffyfluffy:
All wireless modems will have huge latency. Its a well known fact.

Well, technically, you CAN. They didn't promise a blazing fast ultra-low-latency-real-time connection, did they?

All Maxis did was just to say "you can play online Games". Technically speaking, if one were to play, let's say.. UTOPIA (the ultra legendary browser Online Strategy Game) , Ragnarok Online, and others, then yes. You can enjoy a very good game in it. I believe most of other games that comes out from Korea falls under this category, where latency isn't too much of an issue.

For latency based games like World of Warcraft, Counter Strike, and others, its all based on how you adapt to the latency.

Do A Ping Check for 5 minutes straight. For best results, do it on 3 tries.

Give me a report on it. If you wish, you can send it in a PM. I'm not sure whether this is also a support thread for Maxis Wireless Broadband? Because I don't want to infringe any rules.

We'll see how it goes.

BTW, do a traceroute check also.

Seems to be enough. Its pretty obvious that your signal is not on full strength. You're having quite a huge loss of packets, and the tracecert that you gave me isn't proving otherwise either.

I think that's why its reverting to the HSDPA (even though its 768, i'm suspecting a HSDPA connection)

TRy boosting the signal, (the parabola technique seems to work) and see if its any better. Direct it to the station that you can see.

For Maxis USB, what would be the best SIGNAL type? I've tried to log on at KLCC ground (open-air), the connection kept switching between
HSDPA and UMTS...would running programs like Net Speed Booster helps or making things worse?

==============================================
*
There is no HSDPA connection in KLCC. What you're actually getting is the signal from the nearest UTMS base stations. The HSDPA connection that you got was from an internal server from Maxis Tower. (its a station built within maxis tower so that maxis tower could get a HSDPA signal). I hope that clarifies the question. You should not be expecting a HSDPA signal yet, because there isn't one in KLCC, and the signal burst is not strong enough to penetrate KLCC. (or even the nearest areas)

The problem is the signal shows HSDPA full bar (5) but the speedtest results remain poor. The problem is that I've yet to witness
HYPER speed to confirm if it is Hardware/Software or Maxis problem. Is there a list of specific location that you can get full strength
HSDPA signal?

====================================================================================
*
The reason you're not getting a full speed is that you're within two or more coverage zones. KLCC runs under a UTMS, and areas surrounding a huge part of KLCC are only equipped with UTMS stations. Maxis has a internal server that caters for the uses in Maxis Tower, and to a certain extent the signal crosses over to KLCC (but not full penetration)

Hence that is why even though it says its HSDPA, but you're actually only running on UTMS. The only way to get a full strength HSDPA speed (in KLCC area) is to be within the Maxis Tower itself.

From all the post i saw it's still slow my brother can get 180kb/sec download from the dedicated sever with HSPDA he's using RM 120 package.
*
If your brother is using Maxis Data Plan (postpaid supplementary data services) then yes, that is to be expected. This is because there are some limitations in the broadband plan vs the data plan, and I think I made it quite clear that both are running on two similar parallel infrastructures. What I mean to say is that, the source is the same, but the methods and limits differ from each another, hence such difference is normal, and it will continue to be so for many various reasons.

after i survey, maxis will go history after the binding contract expired.

I will shift to izzi.

Izzi looks more promising.

Do have fun, and and do tell us what you feel of Izzi.
Though I must warn that they don't perform as expected, and the latency is quite high for Izzi.
