Seems like working at the site is not as scary as i thought  biggrin.gif  May i know do site engineers have to work under sun all day long?

depends on the project I think haha if the project's until foundation stage I doubt there's any roof/shade for them to hide under it while making sure everything's according to the plan. Of course there's site office but I'm sure they'll need to frequently check the structure. I'm still not sure about their specific job scopes though.

Brick wall calculator ?

Im about to do some diy on my fathers property, going to hire some foreigners and buy materials to do some work, but need assistant on how much stuff to order.

i only want to know how much sand to buy for given amount of brick wall, eg 1m3 etc...

what is the typical formula?
for a 5 feet wall height, how much sand, cement, bricks is required for every feet of wall? with no plaster on either side, i can work out the rest.

i am actually building a raised bed garden, specs are:
-1 feet high using cement bricks align in normal position
-no plaster at all, just cement for holding bricks together
-total about 350 feet long

i can work out how much bricks to order that is easy, just dont know how much sand i need.
cement i think i can work out but if handy please give.

my current understanding is a normal large metal cement mixer (which i dont have access too)
- 1 bag of cement, fill with sand/water can have a max of 4-5 kerata (wheel barrow) loads, each kerata load is about 2 Tong (large plastic oil bucket). each bucket can hold about 20kg of water.
so 1 full cement mixer is about 0.180m3 of cement? does that equate to something like 0.150m of fine sand?

I see, thanks for your reply! I'm afraid some consultant companies don't give much exposure about designing work to the new interns  sad.gif  I do want to learn as much as possible from our trainings. As far as I know from my batchmates, they're only helping in terms of paperwork. Any company recommendations? Maybe it's better for those who have already completed their studies > internship than 3rd year halfway > internship.

consultant firm give most job to junior 1. need to do lot design thingy. so prepared to work extra hour for that.

structure stage (casting concrete) yes! whether u M&E or civil engineer u have to exposed to sun in contractor. M&E need to concealing service inside concrete slab whereby civil engineer handle the concreting issue like some design issue.

u can use cement sand ratio 1:3. or 1:4 if u wanna save more cost. meaning 1kg cement 3kg sand in ur mixture of the cement mortar.

I am currently a civil engineering student as well but i literally do not like what i am learning right now especially designing. What i know is site engineers usually dont do designing. Am i right?  i hope i can find a career that does not require me to do designing in the construction industry.

First thing you need to be aware of is: where is the high value in the engineering/construction industry?

If you strive towards the high value areas then you are able to move higher up the chain and be in more demand (brighter future for you).

Generally being at the site full time doing supervision is low-medium value. In my opinion, design skills is high value. If you want to go further up as a civil engineer, I think having design skills would be useful.

hey guys, u may ask me anything about construction industry and i'll try my best to answer all ur question.
biggrin.gif

Construction Industry is so complex and actually affect various party namely,

House buyer / Purchaser
Developer
Consultant (Architect, Engineer and etc)
Main Contractor
Subcontractor / Vendor / Supplier
Local Authority (DBKL, BOMBA, SYABAS, TNB, TELEKOM, POS, JKKP, IWK and etc.)

u can also ask me about construction law. I know a lot abt that too biggrin.gif

Hi, Currently I am working in the sub contractor and I am confusing about my career pathway. My education background is in mechanical but now I am working as a project engineer in a electrical company. Is that right for me to aim for the assistant M&E coordinator? then after few years aim for assistant project manager?

Thanks if you really could give some suggestions. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

You mean the scale model.

Search on google using "scale model makers kuala lumpur" and you will get some hits.

Do you have any idea how to build an International School? What is the procedure for it? Which department I need to go first? Some said MOE, but part of MOE requirement is to have a CCC Building. So, I assume I follow normal procedure to build a buildings and then apply for International School permit, right?

Hi iwubpreve, can you explain to me regarding the deposits/bonds involved in a tender process?

- Tender deposit
- Tender documentation fee
- Tender bond
- Performance bond

What are the differences? For simplicity's sake, say we have Contractor A (successful) and Contractor B (failed) to submit for tender.

Who will submit which of the above to who (client, architect or QS?) , at what stage respectively?

Which of these payments do we have to return to each contractor respectively, and when?

Over the course of the construction, does any of these payments get cashed?
