well all learn different thing. if u wanna be a chartered qs go for consulting qs firm. consulting qs see the thing in client perspective, help client administer contract. while main contractor is about bidding the accurate price (not too low end up losing money, not too high end up lose the tender).

Can civil engineering graduates work in a QS firm? Do they have to pass through any exam? Comparing QS and civil engineering which one has a better prospect?

I've seen a house ad/banner with a big wording that says:
RM400k
Then the fine print below shows RM600k minimum, RM900k maximum.

Why is it advertise as RM400k?
What's the hidden message / tactic here?

can. no need pass any exam. both also have prospect. but if u study at civil engineering then better u in consulting engineer firm. QS more on contract & costing, engineer more on design.

pretty standard. brick thickness is 100mm. then plaster both side is 25mm each make it 150mm. 130mm-150mm u see probably is try to align to ur wall. try to suit to door frame thickness they plaster accordingly.

but of course the wall did have different thickness for the purpose of different fire rating, acoustic etc. but not really applicable to bungalow la sweat.gif

Hi there, thanks for ur reply. Does that mean QS firm is not as strict as consulting firm? If civil engineers can work in QS but can QS graduates work in consulting firm? Does QS have their own governing body like civil engineering has BEM?

qs firm will hire u still. just that not priority. in fact engineer can visualize thing better coz the engineer and seen the actual work and the sequence so got advantage here. and consulting qs don't need u to register in BQSM to work v them but surely u can't be partner / associate coz u can't be Sr (chartered QS)

for qs is almost not possible to join coz no design knowledge at all maybe fundamental but not sufficient sweat.gif

Thanks again for ur reply. Do I need a degree in QS to register in BQSM in order for me to be a chartered QS? If it is not possible is there any other way for a civil engineering graduate to be a chartered quantity surveyor?

the other way probably would be go to ISM to sit for exam from part 1 I think sweat.gif

why not just work as engineer? coz after like 8 years u will find out no difference work which profession and u wasted lot money and time pursue QS? sweat.gif

this thread was a lot more helpful than what I've expected biggrin.gif I'm currently a civil eng student undergoing training under contractor side. It was really nice to obtain hands-on experience in the site, and I'm thinking of moving forward into my career as a site project planning engineer.

can any sifus advise me how to go about this? I still have a second training next year which I may try to apply into consultant firms under design work (hopefully). But I'm still fairly interested in project planning.

u should try consultant firm on ur next training / intern. surely contractor and consultant is different. consultant is abt design whereby contractor is abt project management. what u study mostly meant for consulting engineer part though sweat.gif

hey guys, u may ask me anything about construction industry and i'll try my best to answer all ur question.
biggrin.gif

Construction Industry is so complex and actually affect various party namely,

House buyer / Purchaser
Developer
Consultant (Architect, Engineer and etc)
Main Contractor
Subcontractor / Vendor / Supplier
Local Authority (DBKL, BOMBA, SYABAS, TNB, TELEKOM, POS, JKKP, IWK and etc.)

u can also ask me about construction law. I know a lot abt that too biggrin.gif

how to roughly estimate the external work rate?
building we could say RM80-100/ft2. But how is on the external works

1. Drainage RM/m?
2. Sewerage RM/m?
3. Water reticulation Rm/?
4. road work Rm/m2?
etc

Hi there! Glad to meet a civil student here biggrin.gif Do you mind sharing how's your daily work at the site like? Do you work under sun all day? What do you mostly do at the site? I am currently a civil engineering student as well but i literally do not like what i am learning right now especially designing. What i know is site engineers usually dont do designing. Am i right? i hope i can find a career that does not require me to do designing in the construction industry.

if u a competent engineer that work with contractor, u can always propose design to consultant smile.gif

why? u might propose a system that benefited to ur construction sequence and hence save time. in construction time is money. beside that u might have cost saving on that particular system / design u propose, hence client is happy also.

I see, thanks for your reply! I'm afraid some consultant companies don't give much exposure about designing work to the new interns sad.gif I do want to learn as much as possible from our trainings. As far as I know from my batchmates, they're only helping in terms of paperwork. Any company recommendations? Maybe it's better for those who have already completed their studies > internship than 3rd year halfway > internship.

It depends on the project, mine was already 80% completed so I just help out in inspection of almost finished units/supervision of workers. I don't know about our actual job scopes but I do know that the civil engs in my company will handle the structural design in the site and they will be responsible if there's any structure failure. Why not design? It's pretty exciting rolleyes.gif I'm also a female working at the site btw, most of them will treat you like their daughter/younger sister haha but you'll still have to be careful when you're alone in the site.
