Hi~ When I was in Perth, I stayed just 5 mins from Curtin. Most of my friends that i met outside school were studying in Curtin uni. I also got friends who did Pharmacy courses there. Yes i agree that they always complain about how hard the course is. The degree course is also a long process, i think it's 4 or 5 years. You do have to put in a lot of effort into studying it. It is also interesting to know that around 70% of the uni population are asians! biggrin.gif It's funny isn't it~

Life in Perth, for most ppl who go there to study uni, they complain that Perth's life is super boring. Even I did. But once u get to know more ppl, its pretty alrite. Words to Malaysians, don't always go shopping by converting all those Aus dollars to Ringgit. Cos if so, u will not buy anything at all. The prices there r much higher, especially food if u dine at restaurants. I suggest that u stock up on groceries especially pasta, then cook at home. It's much cheaper that way. Go shop for groceries around 4.30pm, that's when all the fresh foods' prices r reduced. If u wana find some cheap places to eat, i got a few places to recommend. But i think u better msg me personally as i duno if i can mention those names here  blush.gif n oso cheap places to shop! some clothing prices r even cheaper than Msia tongue.gif

Public transport is super efficient~ i'm actually back in Msia now but i wish to go back there already!!! biggrin.gif many good points there, i just didn't appreciate them when i was there. so, i mite go back there soon thumbup.gif

Were you staying in Vic Park?? Coz I had like tonnes of friends who were staying there. Walking distance to the main bus stop in Curtin. The hostels there are pretty good too, especially Vickery coz they had tennis courts there and I play there quite often. I stayed in Murdoch, right opposite of Murdoch Uni. The corner house facing the underpass bridge. So, my bus ride from my house to Curtin was nearly 45 minutes.

Totally agree with you when the first impression on Perth was a boring no life place. But I find the place quite ok once I got used to it. Went travelling quite often to Swan Valley for wine tasting in the vineyards and their dining there is absolutely superb. Travelling down south to Albany was fun as well. Initially, I was doing the AUD$ to MYR conversion everytime I went out. But after 2 months, didn't bother doing the calculations anymore? The chicken rice in karawara Coles is cheap. AUD$4 for a bountiful plate of chicken rice at the time when I was still there (which was nearly 4 years ago). And there is this japanese outlet called Mr. Samurai or something like that. Their fried chicken rice sets were fabulous and cheap. Man I miss that place.

Just talking about the environment is making me miss the place already. cry.gif

the trend is that after august it usually goes down a little to around 2.8 and by year end or early of next year will be around 2.9 - 3.0

This is just the trend i saw n went through, don't take it at face value

So you're saying you based what you say on your personal observations for 4 years?  If anything, they'd devalue the currency so tourists can buy more things when they come over wouldn't they? wink.gif
*
Ok, firstly u cannot just wanna conclude that they devalue it to attract tourist. There is a balancing act, to devalue and attract tourist but on the other hand it increases the price of foreign goods. You cannot see it in one way, you gotta see it both ways.. Economics is not about giving definite conclusion but prediction, as accurate as possible

I heard that UniSA, Curtin, UTS and Uni of Melbourne are good...but I do not know which one to choose from and also, I heard that the rent is quite high there..will it be cheaper for me to stay at hostel?

In terms of general living costs in these cities, UniSA (Adelaide) will be the cheapest. UTS and Melbourne will the one of the most expensive. Perth is also no longer that cheap now, through still cheaper than the SYD/MEL.

Generally, staying in a student hostel is more expensive than living outside. However, I STRONGLY recommend staying in the student hostel for the first 6 months at least. It gives you time to get used to the place, the environment, and the general cost of living. Because when you first arrive, you're not sure if $150/wk for a particular place is cheap or overpriced.

As a guide, from my experiences being in Brisbane, staying in the student hostel will set me back around $250/wk, through that includes utilities, 3 meals, a fairly nice room, plenty of places to socialise and not that far from uni. Living outside with friends, I'm paying $130/wk in rent, about $5/wk in utulities, and once you add in groceries etc, $210/wk for just living is possible. What prices are like in other places, I cannot say.

If I was accepted into all uni's in the list through, I'd go to Uni Melbourne anyday!

Why not? It's getting harder and harder to get in, with the "Melbourne model" and all. And it is one of the top uni's in Australia.

I agree with haya that it is the safest bet to stay in the student hostel at least for the 1st 6 months. It'll get u ready for wat's to come if u wana move out n share wif some house mates. I was studying in Perth so I'm not so sure about Unis in other places. Perth is really a quiet place compared to Msia and u will surely feel bored when u first arrive there. But i guess that will prove it even more that Perth is a place to do some studies tongue.gif. ANywayz,There's really nothing much to do during ur free time other than getting online. Everything is expensive compared to Msia, but u will hav to accept it bcos that's just the way it is. Doing the Aus Msia currency conversion will really scare u! hehe...

Anyways, in terms of financial stuff staying in Aus, 1 thing that can ease it is to get a part time/casual job. u will hav to apply for a working visa n it will only allow u to work for 20 hours max in a week. However, 1 hour will earn u around AUS$10! Cool right??? that's RM28 an hour shocking.gif I was earning AUD$18 back then when i was in Perth. If u need more info on working visa application, pm me n i'll explain to u.

You may want to consider UNSW too, as their Accounting and Finance disciplines have been consistently ranked top in Asia-Pacific in the past few years, and they have recently merged with the AGSM, forming the biggest business faculty in Australia. If UniSA, Curtin, UTS and Melbourne are your ONLY viable options, then Melbourne is the best choice as their business faculty is currently the 2nd in Australia, above all other unis. This is all only important if you really care about rankings.

Through my own observations, the best place for a degree in Accounting and Finance in Sydney is UNSW or Sydney University. There is virtually no difference between them as they are pretty good. Macquarie and UTS would be next up the list in Sydney.

Almost all Australian universities reconise UEC for university entrance, not just Melbourne. It is only IPTA's that do not reconise UEC.

For E&E engineering in Australia, I guess the most popular uni I have heard during my time of study for this course would be Melbourne Uni and Sydney's University of Technology. The other unis are OK, but these 2 are more reputable I guess. I could be wrong though, better consult IDP and see.

If your 1119 for SPM is 3(b) and above, I think you don't have to take IELTS. I took IELTS last time because my college told me that it's a pre-requisite. But when I arrived in Aus, I was told that I don't need to take IELTS because my SPM's 1119 results was 3(b).

I'd say choose university of melbourne or unsw

University of Melbourne will be adopting the American university system in 2008, so that's another factor to consider when studying in Melbourne.
This meaning if I still remember, is that your first two years at University. You'll be taking basic fundamental subjects, then in the 3rd year, students
will be able to get into the majors. 4th year they can choose to either take up honors or take industry training. This gives student the option to decide
in their 2nd/3rd year what they really want to specialize, rather than choose right after coming out of high school.

Also this makes it easier for students that wish to take up masters in the U.S. if they wish to have a change of environment.

I think you can find out more about the Melbourne model on their website.

There really r many good uni choices in Aus. It all depends on ur requirements e.g. whether or not u can withstand the weather there, the distance from Msia, whether or not u know anyone there, n most importantly the availability of ur course in that uni. Do not hesitate to research more about unis in Australia to find out where n which uni suits ur choice better. Most of those recognised unis r listed on Google. U may do a search e.g. Bachelor Electrical Engineering Australia. Just key in the keywords related to ur course n it shud display many choices.
