i feel like creating a version 2 of this thread, where in our first page, we put in all essential questions, answers and faqs. All of our hardcore information posts are jumbled in the middle of this whole thread

To make things simple, $1000 on average will allow you to survive on average spending(make it below average)

Declaring it as a gift still doesn't guarantee you'll be exempt from taxes. Due to the practices of those ebay sellers, they no longer trust the "gift" declaration. You can get away sometimes, but not always.

yea, i kinda guessed it too. like i mentioned, best bet would be taking away the receipts and boxes

im living on Rm5000- RM5500 a month including rent.
but u could pull if off with rm3000 or less- rent a room in the suburbs - $350 aud
u probably need a monthly tram ticket if ur in the suburbs - $100
food(homecooked),misc, entertainment,activities, $500
just rough estimates.

Ah..just because its suburn, its a herculian effort to find a room priced at 350. That will be exclusive of everything, and you'll need that money to jack in your table, just a mattress or a closet to hold your clothings. Unless you are really frilled on budget, that you have everything stuck onto your luggage bag still, and you prefer sleeping on the floor, working on your work through your tummy.
My breakdown

Rent $650
Travelling $50

I'll be spending about $80 per week for grocery shopping, food, and everything, thats about $320 per month

$1000.

my hostel is next to UWA, but around 10 mins walk + 5 mins bus to my campus. um 10200$ whole sem (till dec 14th), including stay, 3 meals (mayb take away lunch), internet (broadband they said) , elec water bills, facilities. I think divide by 11 months its around 927$ per month. + bus fee and etc, should be around 1000$ + per month too.

I received the computer as payment-in-kind for my services, so I had to ship it over otherwise it'd get unused.

so altogether, how much do u tink u spend per year, including tuition, 100k?

it depends on many different factors with the main ones being the type of course you're pursuing, and the area chosen for your accomodation.

more info on these and we might be able to give you a rough estimate. rolleyes.gif

You can't compare the 3 cities. They are different. Melbourne and Sydney would be more expensive than Perth. By a long way.

Just for the record, $2000/month (about Rm5800) gets me through in Brisbane. A rough breakdown can be seen below:

Here's a rough estimate of where my $220/wk goes to:
rent:$130
utilities$10-20
Groceries:$30
Bus fare:$12
Eating out:$10-20

100k cannot ah for mechanical engineering i think.
im in melbourne uni. $13924 per semester x2 for 2008 nxt year probably 10% increase in tuition fees again. ridiculous really.
so basically tuition fees already Rm83000+ for tuition fees already + living costs.unless u can survive 12 months with RM17k - Rm1500 a month, i think 100k not reasonable.
if your doing mechanical engineering with 24 hrs a week for lectures and tutorials,
i doubt that u are able to do that much part time working without affecting your studies.
You can probably save more money if you find a uni in the suburbs. i guess. less distractions and cheaper accomodation .etc

melb u is selling their world ranking reputation at a premium, by charging significantly higher fees than the rest of oz unis...........and uninformed parents and students are swallowing it hook, line and bank account......

i would advise potential students to avoid it, unless you have a scholarship or very rich parents.......better value, and just as high quality education can be had in any of the g8 unis......especially adelaide/uq........
