you on crack or you were back in the good ol 80's?
Chances of getting a legit accomodation in the suburbs at such price is as good as zero, what more in the city.
If you mean $350 per week, i'm sorry, i misunderstood you. You can almost afford staying in any apartments or houses in the city.
But judging by it, $350 is per month

Then its a good range to start off
If its $300 per week, its still considered expensive. We are talking about a good range of about 180-280 for a good deal. Sharing is the way to go though. Unless you are lucky enough to get an apartment that is cheap, and enough for one person. I've got friends living off Spencer Street, $800-1000 per month, sharing with 3 people.

I think this is quite tough due to Australia's tough customs and quarantine regulations.

I have tried to do this before and I did get taxed. Basically, if the value of the goods exceeds $1000, you get taxed 10% (GST), plus a standard customs processing fee. You can't really get away by declaring it as gifts or anything because they will open up the package, check the contents and value the contents according to the average retail prices here. On top of that, you will need to fill in an export form from Malaysia (provided by the courier) and then complete another customs form here with the necessary amount payable before they release the goods to the receiving courier in Australia.

If you have to do it, I suggest a reliable international courier like UPS, DHL or FedEx (not sure if they do consumer delivery). These major couriers operate in major cities across Australia, so you can easily track your shipment.

Poslaju uses standard EMS service, which means they will be received by Australia Post Express. Generally less reliable than your average courier, but definitely cheaper. If they are not items of value, they're fine.
Afaik, there is no insurance for courier services, only best effort delivery. You can purchase additional shipping insurance, but they will be very expensive (this is not the normal registered post). The cheapest option with some form of insurance is probably registered air parcel (non-express), but that will take up to 2 weeks (10 working days) for delivery.

Laptops shipped into Australia will be charged taxes, regardless of being new, refurbished or old. Some electronic parts like PC motherboards, iphones, laptops or software (even genuine) may be rejected by Customs due to stringent enforcement of US export regulations (actually I suspect it's just Australian distributors putting pressure on Customs to avoid influx of gray imports). However, you can still try, there is just no guarantee.

I brought in a whole computer+monitor set last year from KL to Melbourne. 20kg = RM350 with DHL, and it arrived in 3 days. I guess I was pretty lucky as it didn't get held up by customs.

your budget of $350 per week's pretty high, shouldn't be a problem finding any respectable place in the city. i would recommend either Verve501 or Milano, search em' up! they've given me no problems whatsoever and these are new, as opposed to the other apartments in the city - furthermore, their one-room studios are big enough if you're planning to stay alone. drop me a PM if you happen to need more info. cheers. flex.gif

it will if they are convinced that it's brand new. however, if you fill out the custom declaration stating that it's a gift, you'll be alright. the safest bet is to get rid the receipts and boxes so it looks as if you've been using it for a while

Declaring it as a gift still doesn't guarantee you'll be exempt from taxes. Due to the practices of those ebay sellers, they no longer trust the "gift" declaration. You can get away sometimes, but not always.
