Hi all, want to know if you are only able to choose one job between a job with higher pay and a job that you like (with below average pay), which would you choose?
Thanks in advance.
Salary vs. Interest, Which will you choose?

Both. I won't take a my 'ideal' job if the pay is waaaaaaay to low. Neither do I take something that I don't like

If it is so, take it up Option 1. Learn from it and switch job once you found something suitable for you. At least you won't be jobless and gain nothing at all.

I rather choose Interest ... if you get a job with high pay but you don't like the job descriptions; such as have to work for longer hours or you unable to foster any interest with it. What's the point?

Hmmm let say average salary for Degree graduates is 1.8k, if the job of my interest only offer salary at range 1.3k-1.6k, will it be considered low?

Well let's take an example, the starting salary of a fresh graduate in electronics engineering field is RM 2.3k to 2.5k and I got an offer from a job that I like very much but the salary is RM 1.6k to 1.8k with some allowance, I will choose the latter one.

When I was young, and fresh, just came out from Uni, I would definately go for salary but as time grows, you gain more experiences in working and you are able to bargain and demand, the interest of you can begin to take a little portion of it, not more, because at that time you will have a lots of commitment. Hire Purchase, Housing Loan, PTPTN, Insurance Premium, Car Insurance Premium and etcetra.
As time goes by, and your graph is stagnant, can't increase another as you have obtained the maximum, you will look into your interest. You will have excess money ( provided you don't overspend and invest wrongly and other money losing activities), then you will use that money for your interest. Open a small prawn mee shop? Or a florist? For my current stage, interest begins to take a little portion of it already. |

How you develop it as your life career?? And when you no passion, no interest in your job, most likely you wont do a good job. Interest, you like your job, and you willing to dedicate yourself into it the correct way(not by blindly addicted to a PC game, eg). Nothing is wont have much future. The sky is the limit, it is up to how you develop yourself. Then again, when you do your interest in your free time, its fun, when you get serious about your interest, your interest might start gets boring... |

I agree with socratesman as its not only those 2 options as in reality as you havent taken into account job location, working colleagues, supervisor and many other factors as it doesnt always come down into those 2 only ie interest and money. I think if thread starter describe a situation he is in would be more ideal

Mine will be interest. Since I always make myself interest in a job that have better outcome in future. So, interest come first before salary.

Mentioning about interest, sad but true that many people don't get to work on what they are interested in. For example, many people like to be fashion designers, game designers, superstar, football player, prime minister but ended up being accountant, sales clerk, programmer, marketting exec etc. (which is not something they really desired, regardless of whether the salary is decent or not)
But luckily, interest is not something that being fixed into your mind since you're born. It is being developed dynamically. And I agree with what nyprinz83 said. Whether you like the job or not is not solely dependant on your interest in the job nature or the salary, but also some other factors like your colleagues, your boss, the environment. So many people actually find themselves reluctant to work in job they didn't really like, but ended up enjoying it |

yeah, environment is another factor like some people mention previously.
if you like your job,but your collegue and boss treat you like dog,you wouldn't be happy working too. in the opposite, even though you dont see any future in your career, but you enjoy doing it and the collegue and boss are nice, you will be more happy than the previously mentioned. |

The question is hard to answer. If higher, how much higher? 10%?
Interest, how interesting? The higher salary job totally not interesting? Given a job that I really hate but pay high (10-15%), I will rather take the job I like. If it pays 30-50% more, that is something else to consider. |

Salary feeds you every month and pay your bills.
However, bear in mind that salary makes you happy at the end/beginning of the month only and job interest keeps you happy when you work. I myself have took a job which I didn't like for the sake of money and found myself happy only on the 27th of each month (pay day). That's a really sad way to live your working life. However, your interest should be reasonably realistic and the salary must be at least sufficient to meet your needs. The right choice should be a balance between salary and interest. Pay could be a very short term thinking. Everybody wants more money, but sometimes, if your are in a job which suits your interest, you will love your job (but not nessecarily the company) and you will also become better at what you do, and eventually you may be more in demand. If you can do a job you don't like really well, then you can still go far. However, most people will become better, happier and more motivated doing something they like and this kind of people may have a better chance to climb up the ladder. Salary can change in a blink of an eye once you found a higher paying job, but years of experience and knowledge takes time. |

bear in mind u work at least 8 hours a day, at least 5 days a week.
it's the thing u see almost everyday so there needs to be an interest in it or else u won't sustain. being interested in wat u do will make the pain (like working lots of OT) bearable and u'll perform better, hence leading to better salary |

Some company doesn't allow to claim OT even though you work more than normal working hours. It falls under job description implicitly.

This is a tough question, I use to work towards interest, but after fews year stick to interest, I think I will aim for salary now. Cos when you have more commitment, interest is not important anymore, because anywhere you work interest will become bored.

The ideal job is interest and salary must be balance, else choose salary over interest. You can only choose interest over salary if you're rich enough. |

I doubt there will ever be a right answer to this as there are so many pros and cons to choosing salary against interest and vice versa. Again it depends on the very situation and conditions a person is in currently and of course ultimately the individual itself. Maybe if he/she doesnt have a family to support can go for interest and any sort of salary ????

for current me...i will choose higher salary...u know y??
this is because we can take higher salary(let say RM2500) to do something that we wan to do...like do future investment plan, doing other business as ur part time to increase ur money....and so on... however if u choose ur interest job but lower salary(let say rm1600-rm1800),ur spending is limit only...so this will not encourage u to do other thing as i mentioned. For ur additional information, as a human, our interest may change from time to time...mayb after certain period, wat u wan is not previous u wan!!!!!that y i said interest is not my 1st option. That day i attend a seminar, after survey from country, they said almost 85% of worker do their work but that is not their interest. What they concern is not interest but money to survive only. the important is know to use this money for future financial plan No money no talk!!!No choice...we live at reality life!!!!! As conculsion, we must work for our dream!!!don work for money bcos this is quite hard for us to survive!!!!!!!!!! |

Depends on how high is high... very subjective.
No money, interest may get lost. With money, maybe non-interested job becomes new interest. For example, give you choice to play/test games for cheap salary RM2k or work in whatever desk job for rm5k. Which to choose? |
