Pindad increases its Komodo 4x4 tactical vehicles range with a new Recon variant

IndoDefence 2014, which is held at Jakarta from 5 to 8 of November, has been chosen by Pindad to highlight a new light armored tactical vehicle focused on recon missions, the Komodo Recon. The Komodo is a specific armored vehicle that enables ground troops to conduct operations that requires high maneuverability.

The Komodo is equipped with bulletproof body and has a defending capability through its 7.62 mm turret-mounted machine gun. Komodo has been deployed for Indonesian Army Special Forces (Kopassus) and Indonesian Police Special Forces (Brimob). PT Pindad has secured strategic partnership with foreign companies for a better armament system. The partnership has resulted satisfactory performance for the end-users.

The new Komodo Recon variant is a 4x4 light armored tactical vehicle based on the well-known Renault Trucks Defense's Sherpa chassis. Equipped with full automatic transmission and a Renault's 4-cylinder engine, which allows a power range of 230Hp, the Komodo has a max speed of 80km/h. Thanks to a fuel tank capacity of 165 liter, Komodo Recon's maximum range extends up to 450km.

Komodo Recon armor consists in bullet proof steel and 38 mm bullet proof glass. The Recon variant weighs 7,500 kg and has a payload capacity of max 1,500 kg. It can carry up to 5 soldiers with complete equipment. Komodo Recon can be outfitted with a 7.62 mm or a 12.7 mm turret-mounted machine gun.

Pindad new recon vehicle has a length of 5.4 m, a width of 2.3 m and a hidth of 2.2 m. It can cross trenchs and fords of max 0.75m depth.

Indonesian Armed Forces have placed an order for 40 vehicles, which 8 has already been delivered. Indonesian Military also shown interest for a Komodo mobile artillery command post variant and has signed a new contract for 56 Komodo special platform vehicles, which will be delivered by 2015 and equipped with MBDA's Mistral surface-to-air missile platform.

Is this original version or recon variant? Too plain-looking for me. I was expecting some sort of opto-electronic gear like IR unit or long range cameras in a recon unit.

IR or some sort of opto-electronic gear (the small square type beside the commander & in front of the gunner) can be seen clearly from this pic:

ToT means more money to be poured later, and again budget is still main concern

Remember the KS-1A deal? They projected we can build ToT FN-6 SAM to 100 unit per-year
But no budget..

ZBL-09 Assault gun variant with 105mm rifled gun. From the people standing beside it, we can scale how large the vehicle really is.

Pretty much on par with other 8x8s, wonder if our AV8 can mount assault gun or go crazy with howitzers

I think if the turret ring size is right I think you can install any turret you want, as long as the hull allows the weight. I think AV8 turret ring size at most can only fit a medium sized 2-man turret, I haven't seen any mention of plans installing anything heavier than a 25mm turret.

ZBL-09 started originally with ZBD-09 IFV with 30mm autocannon and later upgraded to ZBL-09 modular system with all the variants I mentioned in earlier posts.

Looks like they completely throw the apc function, the rear ramp door is only a small panel now

If then this is a tank destroyer thru and thru

Not sure AV8 can do the same

Same with SP Artillery version, they've removed the rear ramp and left a small door. I also doubt they can fit any useful amount of infantry with large fighting compartment of that large 105mm turret taking up space in the passenger compartment.

A bit strange though, that they don't have a stabilizing system like outrigger legs or rear spade. Combined with the vehicle's relatively low weight snd wheeled drive, each shot must rock the hull significantly, causing not so optimal accuracy.

Hawk is awesome.
I would love it been upgrade to have more deadly ground attack.
perhaps addin more gooding sensors to it as well.

But like everyone.. it old

It like asking an old horse to do more work although it a very good old work

QUOTE(Avex @ Nov 11 2014, 08:57 AM)
looking at how China able to even introduce their weapons and sell it to international buyers. We may laugh at China for their weapons, some called it copy, but in fact reverse engineering is so much harder. In a 10 year of Zhuhai show, they have manage to cover so many grounds and produce a full range of weapons.
Even North Korea and Taiwan and South Korea is so much more capable of producing their own weapons.
Compare to these countries, Malaysia looks like some pariah country. 10 year period China did so many things, we produce nothing to even able to sell.
We have the funds, and capability to build an industry, but then it looks like even Indonesia can even do so much better
*
Thre still very large doubt on china weapon quality

Reverse engineering is not necessary better. I think u dont understand that if you copy something, it not necessary better it might look the same but who knows it any better in capabilities.

Look at china jet engine, until now they can't get the copy right and have to take from russia. Anyway, there news they are actually developing a new engine that at least on par with russian equivalent

Btw we are no big in defence budget. I always hope thre military man holding top position in the MoD not someone who know nothing that even a military fans can know better than him

QUOTE(waja2000 @ Nov 11 2014, 09:28 AM)
not really, M-346 can do CAS, traning jet, but lack of EOD, ground sensor, so can't do ISR, SAR day and night etc ...
anyway Hawk already in our airforce it still continue serve other few more year, not more than 5 year have to retired.
Scorpion more role can add in, it have 20k hours life compare to M-346 at 10k life.
i not means other jet like M-346 or Yak130 event L-15 not good, all very good.
i means Scorpion can do more role and mission which attractive to Air-force. also the price and service life.
if our country have MPA, AEW&C, Scorpion jet maybe no much attractive to as.
*
textron also say the engine will be replaced with more powerful variant with the expense of fuel economy. More like the current engine is just for demonstration

Btw the sensor suite does not come with the plane, we have to get it from somewhre to fit into it internal center bay

Pernah jumpa enginer sapura. He say can letak without much modifications. Maybe suspension keras sikit and horsepower boost sikit. It ecu control anyway. Structure wise can put as it wide enough but may require some structure reinforcement for the possible large recoil

Masalah... cost. Those minor redesign also take time and cost. How much he wont say. If turret get from china boleh, cheaper? His answer boleh 'but do u trust china engineer enough for them to come help us especially on military hardware?' It just trust issues generally

Second, no interest. I not sure about this but putting a large caliber gun is not something our army want or really interested in for now. Its role is to replace our aging apc. Rather get a dedicated system such as self propelled artillery
