Hi all, in a dilemma right now

Preferred brand: Anything goes (prefer no acer)
Budget:4k ish, can stretch but prefer not to
Usage: Photo processing in LR, medium gaming (Planetside 2 and Guild wars 2 are the most demanding games I'll ever play) and word processing.

Important context: Will be flying to UK in september, and I'll need a laptop that can act as a desktop over there but still be portable enough to be lugged around in my bag to the library etc. Hence reliability is an important aspect.

I prefer 13-14 inch but 15 inch would be fine if it's slim (GE60 Ghost?)

I'm thinking of Illegears 13 inch vs Aftershocks 13 inch vs Alienware 13 vs GE 60 Ghost.

Illegear has a promotion now so that'll be great, but I'm worried if the 72% colour gamut screen would be enough for photo processing.

Also, when should I buy it assuming that the 960m cards are probably coming soon?

I'm fine with that because I can send the laptop home to my parents for repairs I suppose....

I don't mind paying more for the alienware if it has international warranty. and I read that AW13 has an i7 model now?

No experience with Planetside 2, but Guild Wars 2 (the vanilla 1 anyway) is a processor bounded game. Thus investing in an i7 would be recommended vs a high end graphics card.

On another note. time for V25 perhaps?

My budget is above 5k but below 6k...im interesting in Msi GE62 Apache Pro or Alienware 15... Both specs are same
Which is better?
*pls gv me some reasons for ur opinion, really needed, thx
*
By comparison both notebooks are equal as they have i7 processor and Nvidia 970M GPU with the MSI GE62 being cheaper by RM500.

But there are also a few other slight differences to consider.

Check the Intel i7 model as MSI has recently upgraded to the i7-4720HQ. Only minor differences with i7-4710HQ but a newer chip nonetheless.
http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/0/Intel_C..._i7-4720HQ.html

Alienware HDD is usually 5400RPM while MSI GE62 is using 7200RPM HDD. So make sure you upgrade your HDD if buying the Alienware.

There is one major difference and should make the MSI GE62 Apache Pro the better choice. For the lower price, you're getting a 15'6 UHD 4K IPS panel.

Ok going to post my needs.

Gaming laptop
budget RM5k+
I want something that will last me for some time (2-3 years)
Branding - No concern.
Screen size - 15.6"

Initially looked at MSI but that was around dec '14. Open to any suggestions.

If you want something future proof then start saving money and get the GT72 with upgradeable MXM graphic cards. Lols!

But seriously, check out the new GE62/72 Apache series from MSI.

Got 3 models with Nvidia 965M and 970M GPU. And they now upgraded the cooling to dual fan and also supports Super Raid 2 which means you can add up to 3 SSD for faster read & write speed. And SSD slot is also using the latest m.2 SSD format.

Based on your requirements, the GE62 should be quite good for you.

Hey Decky,

There is the GE60 Apache and the GS60 Ghost? Which one are you referring to?

IMHO, the GS60 is slim and very portable and suits creative designers. There used to be a GS60 model with 3K panel that is perfect for use with Lightroom. Not sure if you can still find it now. But no worries, all of the MSI notebooks can support 4K output to external monitors also. icon_rolleyes.gif
