As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Mourinho also spoke about his love for the Premier League. He believes that it's the uncertainty involved in the number of teams that can win the title that makes the league exciting and unpredictable.

"That's why I like the Premier League so much. At this moment nobody knows who is going to win the title. I know that we want to and I know that we can, but it's the kind of competition where I can't say," the Portuguese manager said.

During my time in Italy, when the league started each season I knew it would be Inter first, Milan second, or Milan first, Inter second. When I went to Spain it was Barcelona first and Real Madrid second or Real first, Barcelona second. In this moment I think the league is between us, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man United and Man City. Who is going to be first? Who is going to play Europa League? I don't know," the Chelsea boss explained.

A bit old for his rumored price. More likely to be someone cheaper and/or a bit younger.

Pereyra to play left winger, so Asamoah can accommodate the midfield, which will be vacant after Vidal's departure?

Who is LVg targetting then? I heard Klopp is blocking Hummels' transfer right? De Vrij or Martins Indi would be gud. Martins Indi reminds me of Ferdinand. Too bad he moved to Porto dy.

With a 352 formation, I think we will defo need another CB. Good to see youth players stepping up during the friendly game, they need more experience and hopefully they will be picked by LVG more often.

Shaw with Reece and Blackett as cover. On the right maybe Jones or Smalling will cover for Rafael or Valencia. Gosh we really need a good good CB.

No idea. If follow rumors he is going to sign 90% of the Dutch squad, Vidal, Hummels, di Maria, Miranda, Vermaelen, Varane, and everyone dalam kawasan yang sewaktu dengannya.

Really a case of have to wait until something more concrete comes out instead of all the goreng rubbish being thrown around by the media.

yes,

for cleverley case, he'd been at his lowest point last year, the change of manager might be the deciding point of his career at United

for blackett case, it's more pivotal than cleverley's case for the team I guess. Van Gaal opted to play Martins Indi and de Vrij as left and right center back in side which are the same with their preferred foot, players who are also able to play at full back, even when Martins Indi was subbed out, it was Blind slotted into his position, not another known center back (although it might also due to lacks of quality of center backs at the bench). Well United has Smalling, Jones, Michael Keane for de Vrij role, but none for Martins Indi role.

Evans didn't seem too comfortable at his role against LA Galaxy, but undoubtedly he's still rated as top defender, so he might be plotted into "center CB" with Jones being dragged out wider into right center back. So for Blackett case, it may be deciding point whether van Gaal will buy left-footed center back to be starting XI, or bench player, IMO.

We may also expect for van Gaal to play Carrick or Fletcher at the back. I personally would have very much tried hard to sign Kwadwo Asamoah instead of Vidal, good player who can play fluently as left wingback, winger, CM, and given his defensive quality can fill that left CB role *may also swap role in certain time with Shaw throughout the game*

Just my 2 cents, at the end of the day, van Gaal may opt to switch to 4-3-3 if the system doesn't work when the league's curtain has been raised..

well said, Blackett would be over the moon if that's the case.. biggrin.gif

so what other alternatives that are out there? a left footed CB... hmm.gif

Tom Cleverley is confident he can revive his Manchester United career because he 'is a (Louis) Van Gaal type of player'.

that would be a case in point lol

i don't go to other threads much, most times it's not interesting. if they discuss players or strategies (without bias) it would be interesting (and enlightening), but the few times i popped in to see whats cooking.. it's either blindly defending players or making some passive-aggressive comments about people who aren't rating their players/team enough, or outright ABU style comments.

Rumours that Cleverley will be the captain today. Fletcher played 90 mins and was the captain. Cleverley should be playing the full game as well. Hope to see the real TC23 later. ph34r.gif

i think they had to do that coz they cant get past our high defence line.. hence the number of offside calls. looking compact and nice but of course, there's the occasion danger of getting caught out. too bad Roma players not putting away chances that went by...

Well, to be fair United struggled in the first half, erm of the first half. Even new golden boy, Herrera struggling in the heat. After the water break, something must have been said by LvG because then United turned up more. Rooney's touches before the goal is almost becoming his trademark nowadays but nobody can deny the sheer brilliance of that shot. After that, confidence up a bit, play bit better.

It's pre-season, still too early to tell. Then again, United also played badly in few pre-season games last season. At least, in the 1 and half games, they don't resort to sideways and crosses too much anymore. That should be a positive. brows.gif

Miss some part of the second half, but I think it's fair to say that we were lucky. Lucky with Rooney's first goal, and lucky to be up 3-0 so fast. I thought Roma was the better team overall, and yes, long balls are considered a tactic too and it shows that it was a good tactic against us.

For me, I hope United will not use this style of play again. Its damn depressing see the opposition holding the ball and we just sit back. I would rather we keep the ball and play slow, patience, probing attacks.

The first goal might be lucky, but you make your own luck. It's not the first time Rooney hit one of those amazing shots(Arsenal in his Everton days). As for scoring goals in quick successions, just look back at the LA Galaxy game. The fluidity is back in our play that's been missing for a year or two now and we're reaping the rewards from that. Stick to the same side that played in the first half, we would likely ripped them to shreds. Look at the quality of attacking players we have and tell me with a straight face that we're not capable of that sort of stuff.

I wouldn't judge our backline that featured the youngsters. Blackett was awful playing them onside time and time again. Reece James have looked quite good as LWB. Could save us some cash buying back to Sjaw if he keep this up. But we really need to add another CB at least if we plan to play with. 3 CBs. Keane would be a useful back there.

Need another CM. After Herrera and Carrick, big gulf to the next one. Cleverley have turn into a pondan. Disappointing seeing him play this way compared to the busy fearless attacking intent he showed in his first season or two for us. Since then, a lot of our players follow similar path. Nani, Valencia, Ando.. Where did those awesome performances go?

Anyway.

QUOTE
Roma’s first goal was scored from his own half by Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic. Asked if goalkeeper Ben Amos was at fault, Van Gaal said: 'I am almost 63 years old. But when the ball is in the air for four or five seconds I could run 50 yards.'
Lol that bold part. laugh.gif

well said, Blackett would be over the moon if that's the case..  biggrin.gif

so what other alternatives that are out there? a left footed CB...  hmm.gif
*
As expected, LvG started with Jones-Evans-Blackett, related to how Blackett performed against Roma, many people will have varied judgement.

as for alternative left footed CB:
- rumoured: Vermaelen (29yo this year, i'd prefer younger option)
- dream choice: Vertonghen
- younger choice: Juan Jesus, if Chicarito being shipped out to Inter, I'd prefer to swap him with the center-back rather than rumoured Guarin
- versatile choice but not known as CB: Kwadwo Asamoah
- fm 2014 choice: Doria laugh.gif

On the other note:

QUOTE
“I think we don’t play a good match,” he said. “I don’t know, whether because of the height of stadium, the air, all of my passers failed today.

“It wasn’t normal. It was the height and the air, the ball was bobbling all the time, but we scored remarkable, fantastic goals and were able to keep the ball in possession in the second-half.”

“When you see Mata or [Ander] Herrera playing, and [Shinji] Kagawa, who are the best passers – but still everything went wrong, it is the air, I believe.”

Amos is gonna get an earful for sure. First goal already LVG public putdown.

Looking at the penalty kick.. he is pretty far off his line too? Guessed the right way, if he had been on his line he would have had a better chance of getting there in time?

Just caught up with all our transfer articles:

Out: Fellaini, kagawa, Chicharito, Nani..

In: Vidal.

-that's alot of forwards going out.. Vidic is fanning chicha's departure to Inter doh.gif
-hope kagawa stays, quality player for dortmund but just doesnt seem to be able to adapt with our style..he needs those assists... sad.gif
-im really tired of Nani, i have officially given up hope..
-fellaini, well, maybe he's just waiting for Moyes to land a job first ?? rolleyes.gif

LvG trying to give indirect moral support to Cleverley. Fletcher had a strong game. Evans too. Not to mention Young steady throughout. Out of Young, Nani, Kagawa, Young the best performing so far and Nani the worst.

well the game flow wasnt that good, but the team did show glimpses of brilliant pass and move.

united dominated the match, inter didnt do much, so they deserve to win lol

rclxms.gif rclxms.gif Good to see Fletcher getting more and more games for pre-season, but first half his performance somehow give me some concern, can see him still not really considered "full fit" for EPL match fitness standard.. But what can we ask for more from him, especially he's coming back from the weird sickness like that, hopefully he can getting more and more fit la... and also hope our incredible fitness coaches and specialist can do something to his muscles.. flex.gif

blackett, for me is a great youngster. people keep mentioning keane alot but hes shown as much as, if not more then keane. young can play in 5 of our outfield positions, and he has done it well. he may have saved his united career for atleast one more season lol. fletcher looked good in the middle, and so did cleverley. reminded me of the cleverley that was heavily involved in f***ing city 3-2 in the community shield a few seasons ago. as for inter, less said about them the better. why would you approach a pre season game like that?! diving, rolling around, 10 defenders and their only attack plan was to smash a ball miles up pitch and hope one of their players gets to it before one of our THREE defenders

For someone who rarely play with the team (and somewhat demoralized for last season), I think he did good. And he played in striker position so might be a lil weird for him, pairing with Nani at second half. Looks better when Chicharito came on.

Nah, it will be either Rooney or RvP to start I think. At least in that formation. Welbeck/Zaha in that Robben role.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal praised Shinji Kagawa's performance in their draw with Inter Milan.

Kagawa played in the playmaker role in the second half after replacing Juan Mata, having also been used as a holding midfielder in the previous two games.

"I know him from Borussia Dortmund and he played in the no.10 position," van Gaal said.

"I wanted to try him in the no.6 or no.8 position in our system in the first two matches, and then I also gave him a chance at no.10 because he wanted to play in that position. He did it much better than in the two matches before."

player ratings...

QUOTE
Anders Lindegaard - (Sub off 45) - Never really troubled by the opposition after being given the start by Van Gaal, most of his work came through distribution - 5

Chris Smalling - (Sub off 45) - Often using his strength and positioning to ease the strikers out of scoring opportunities, the back three including Smalling prevented any clear cut chances for the opposition strikers - 5

Phil Jones - (Sub off 45) - Jones had the best opportunity of the first half when the big centre back connected with a corner and fired his diving header towards goal, great save by the keeper halted Jones grabbing an opener - 6

Jonny Evans - Willing to throw himself into the tackle and make the required block's from long range efforts, Evans again looked comfortable working in a back three and even moved forward looking to probe with his passing - 7

Antonio Valencia - (Sub off 45) - The winger is adjusting to life as a wing back under United's new system but the friendly really showcased the strengths Valencia possesses, the Ecuadorian is willing to bomb forward and also track his man defensively, unfortunate to be yellow carded - 6

Darren Fletcher - Once again selected as captain, Fletcher marshalled the midfield and played the full allotted time for his club, the Scot has completely taken to the style of play wanted by Van Gaal and is comfortable to get the ball forward to his fellow playmakers, Also scored the winning penalty for the Red Devils - 6

Anders Herrera - (Sub off 45) - A quieter performance from the big summer signing but still found himself linking well with the players in more advanced positions, exudes confidence whilst in control of the ball - 6

Ashley Young - Young selected as the left wing back instead of Shaw showed a valuable competency at the position and his potency from wide was a prosperous outlet for his team, creating chances with his whipped delivery adds to another impressive outing, fantastic opening penalty in the shootout - 7

Juan Mata - (Sub off 45) - The little spaniard continues to employed just behind the striker and his sharp passing and work off Rooney is a joy to behold, had a few sights of goal including a fired effort which drifted just wide of the post but the one touch football he is very much a part of is encouraging - 7

Wayne Rooney (Sub off 45) - Rooney looked lively and alert for United and his movement off the ball gave the Inter defenders a lot of trouble, with inventive and creative intentions, Rooney fashioned a few chances in a cagey first half but was unable to find the net - 7

Danny Welbeck - (Sub off 45) - Consistently offered himself as an outlet ball up front, Welbeck's pace in behind kept the defenders honest and allowed playmakers like Mata and Rooney to operate, unfortunately opportunities did not present themselves for the forward - 6

David De Gea - (Sub on 45) - Made one brilliantly agile save to deny a long range free kick attempt, gloriously tipping the ball over the bar, close to a few efforts in the shootout - 6

Michael Keane - (Sub on 45) - Keane worked within the ethos the side is developing and took to his centre back role with a determination and willingness to work for his fellow teammates, provided a solid shift - 6

Tyler Blackett - (Sub on 45) - Naturally a left back, Blackett took up the position as the left sided centre back when entering the fray and faired well with cover for Shaw who was encouraged to get forward, neatly passed out from the back - 6

Tom Cleverley - (Sub on 45) - Full of energy and very much involved in United going forward, bridged the gap between defence and attack, he also wasn't afraid to mix it up in the middle of the park, side footed his penalty and sent the keeper the wrong way - 7

Luke Shaw - (Sub on 45) - Believed to have been working on his fitness earlier in the day, Shaw started the game on the bench before being introduced in the second half, keeping it simple the 19-year-old is still appears to be adjusting to his new team - 5

Shinji Kagawa - (Sub on 45) - Following in the performance of Mata, Kagawa once again played in the attacking midfield position and looked to set his wingers and strikers on runs ahead of him, joining the play later from deep. Comfortable penalty in the shootout - 5

Wilfried Zaha - (Sub on 45) - Showed his youthful exuberance and willingness to dribble at defenders despite it not coming off on occasions, however his determination created opportunities in the second half - 6

Luis Nani - (Sub on 45, Sub off 76) - Nani was brought on at half time to be featured up front alongside Zaha, however chances did not fall his way and he was brought off for the introduction of 'Chicharito' - 4

Javier Hernandez - (Sub on 76) - With his usual enthusiasm and energy off the bench, Hernandez harried defenders and often looked for little openings of goal to find his opportunity, stroked his penalty home well - 6

QUOTE
Anders Lindegaard 5 - Nothing to do of note in 45 minutes. Kicking was poor and rushed in general.

Antonio Valencia 5 - Pretty subdued defensively but fared reasonably well against opposite number Dodo.

Phil Jones 7 - Pushed out well and was aggressive defensively. Close to opening scoring and made a good block late in the first half.

Chris Smalling 6 - Anchored the defence. No glaring errors in possession and swept up well.

Jonny Evans 7 - Composed and impressively comfortable on the ball as usual. Read the game smartly.

Ashley Young 7 - Struggled out on the left but was better on the right in the second period. Got forward well and put some dangerous balls in.

Ander Herrera 6 - Good energy in the middle and was tidy on the ball.

Darren Fletcher 8 - Circulated the ball intelligently, buzzed about well but perhaps most impressively, marshalled the players ahead of him and organised well.

Juan Mata 7 - Seems to enjoy playing behind two forwards. Linked well with the forwards and a 25-yard-drive was as close as United came in the first half.

Wayne Rooney 6 - Looked generally sharp but first touch often deserted him. Nice one-touch link-up play.

Danny Welbeck 6 - Great work-rate but perhaps didn’t see enough of the ball. Like Rooney, his one-touch football was joyous.

Substitutes

David de Gea 6 - One save from a Guarin save was the total of his 45 minutes of action.

Michael Keane 6 - Composed, solid in the air and read the game well.

Tyler Blackett 6 - A better display than last time out. Much more composed on the ball.

Luke Shaw 6 - Came in for some flak but looked reasonably sharp. Good speed down the left.

Tom Cleverley 7 - Very bright, coming close to opening the scoring with a volley and looking to move the ball forward quicker.

Shinji Kagawa 6 - A few nice touches here and there and threaded a couple of nice balls through.

Nani 5 - Typically wasteful in possession. Not impressive at all.

Wilfried Zaha 7 - Positive and direct. Still very raw but had the confidence to beat his man in the centre forward role.

Javier Hernandez n/a- Didn’t have a sniff at goal during a 15 minute cameo.

Nah, it will be either Rooney or RvP to start I think. At least in that formation. Welbeck/Zaha in that Robben role.
*
you're forgetting Januzaj in there mate, the most potential player among the 3, and yes agreed the combination will be like that, RvP-Rooney will be too static and easy to defend against, doesn't offer lot of pace especially considering that most probably LvG wiill play Mata as no 10.

and regarding the game, I like more the performance in second half. Positioning and movement were well done and much better than the rigid first half. MotM: Kagawa.

QUOTE
"So we are doing well but we are looking for defenders, because a lot of defenders have gone. We have to replace them but I like also like Michael Keane and Tyler Blackett."

"I was pleased with Wilfried's performance but we have to wait and see. He has a lot of competition with the other strikers."

Arturo Vidal’s agent ‘working around clock’ on Manchester United transfer

Arturo Vidal’s agent Fernando Felicevich is now working around the clock to get his client a transfer to Manchester United – despite Juventus insisting he will stay.

Felicevich has already had a busy summer after sorting out Alexis Sanchez’s £32million transfer to Arsenal from Barcelona, but the Vidal deal would be bigger.

Reports say he is now working all hours to try and orchestrate Vidal’s switch to Old Trafford, with the agent now in Italy talking to Juventus about a deal.

The Italian club said yesterday that they expect to keep the Chilean but Felicevich has apparently presented an offer from United for them to consider.

Felicevich’s rush with this deal comes with Juve wanting to confirm their squad for the new season by the time they jet off to Indonesia on August 6.

Juve won’t consider any sales by that date so time is running out to make this transfer happen.

Fingers crossed. Based on the statements from LVG, my guess is we will only be looking to sign 1 CB for experience and 1 CM/DM.

He said good things about Keane and Blackett, and has played James a fair bit on tour.. suspect a couple of them will be promoted soon to act as backups for the starters.

If Young can continue to do well in the wingback role then Valencia, Young, Shaw, and Rafael are the 4 wingbacks for the coming season.

3 CB formation means we want at least 6 CBs for it... and we have 5 guys already (albeit all except Evans are young-ish). Just add some experience.

Simeone confirms Hernandez interest

"He's great in one-on-one situations and he's someone who could be useful to any team," the Atletico coach told a press conference in Mexico, ahead of his team's pre-season friendly with Club America.

"We are speaking to the sporting directors about the type of player we want and then it's up to them to bring the player in. With Javier Hernandez and lots of other great players, anything is possible. We can't close any door until the transfer window shuts."

The one that went away. Cristiano Ronaldo.

Just finished watching his video. Absolutely brilliant player. Real Madrid did reap the reward. What could have happen if he didn't went there.

Similar case to Luis Suarez. Everybody is dreaming of playing for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Liverpool used to have the aura but they kinda lost the aura.

LvG mentioned if it wasn't because of Reece was injured, Shaw wouldn't have played, so far it's looking good for Reece.

Having 6 CBs might be too much, first it's hard to keep all of them having enough games to play although the fear of the main 3 CBs (Evans, Smalling, Jones) of getting injured frequently like recent seasons are still strong, second in LvG system player like Carrick and Fletcher shouldn't have got much difficulty to play at CB position.

When I mentioned 6 CBs, it was counting Evans, Smalling, Jones, Blackett, and Keane as 5. Good numbers, but if we're gonna play a system that uses 3 CBs then we will need reserves (and like you said injuries are a concern). Add to which 1 experienced CB will be good (Fletcher and Carrick are needed more in CM...).

Madrid have had that aura for a long time, particularly among players from South America/Portugal/Spain. Barca.. not so sure. They were big without having the Madrid level aura in the 90s and the early turn of the century. It's only more recently when they've had a huge upswing in their European performances that they've been higher profile.

English clubs have a hard time competing. Weather sucks compared to Spain, and it's a more physical league.. not all players welcome that even if the money is good.

Working extra sessions seemed to work well for young Shaw, first time seeing him doing that lung bursting run in pre-season in that 2nd half. A good subtle wake up call for Mr. Shaw?

It would be interesting to see if Januzaj would play in that no. 10 role or Robben role? I think he can play either one, but that would mean potentially, we have Welbeck-RvP-Rooney-Januzaj-Zaha-Chica for the two spots. If United will continue to play in that system that is, and this is based on pre-season games only. LWB is covered with Shaw, Ha-mes (brows.gif) and erm, Young (ph34r.gif). RWB is covered with Rafa, Tony V and, erm, Young. Young = Kuyt biggrin.gif

Definitely need new CB, new CM.

CM spots are already packed too, Herrera Fletcher Fellaini Carrick Cleverley all are competing for 2 CM spots, also Kagawa who LvG has tried to deploy him there before Inter game, Ando and Powell are already excluded.

The squad is too big, I'd rather have compact squad like Barcelona and the system now can allow that to happen imo. Keane already has substantial experience on loan, it's time for him to make it into the senior team or leaving, not on reserves anymore. Evans Smalling Jones have finally been given big chance to prove themselves after Rio-Vida arrival.

Yes agreed, on those two, Madrid has always been in the upper hand related to that matter.

“There is only one football country I wanted to see inside and that was England, because of the level and the atmosphere,” Van Gaal said. “That was why I announced [Holland decision] in October, so that all of the English clubs knew and I had more offers than just Manchester United.

“United know what I can do and I think that is why they have come for me, but they were not the only club. Tottenham Hotspur also came, but I am not a child any more and I know what I can do and that not any coach can work with the biggest clubs.

“I don’t say it’s a dream to be here, though, because I am 62 and I know what I can do.”

Finally, an United figure I have been very keen to follow for the interview, all of his interviews so far are interesting, honest and straight forward answers, not that text-book kind of answers.

LWB : Shaw, James, Januzaj, Nani
RWB : Rafa, TonyV, Young, Zaha
CB : Evans, Smalling, Jones, Keane, Blackette
CM/DM : Herera, Carrick, Clev, Fletch, Afro
AM : Kagawa, Mata, Lingard
ST : Rooney, RVP, Welbz, Chicha, Keane

in terms of wingers/wingbacks we have too many options already on the LWB side I think Nani is the one in most danger of being shipped out while on the RWB side probably Zaha since the TonyV and Young combo has been LVG's goto guys in the friendlies so far with Rafa out injured.

on CB's side Keana and Blackette have the high work rate and mobility required for a 3 man rear while the established trio would be the starting 11 unless we bring in a top CB before the transfer window close hmm.gif

after i listed the players we have i think you're right we need a DM more than any other players as only Herera, Fletch and Carrick can operate as DM but the senior duo i have my concerns in terms of their ability to remain injury free, while afro/clev are more CM/AM, it wouldn't surprised me that Afro gets offloaded.

i think AM is where there is less headache with the two big money AM's Kags and Mata the preferred starters with Lingard as understudy.

striker wise we're pretty loaded as well no doubt rooney and rvp as the preferred starters but i don't think chicha can wait on the bench another season so he might leave sad.gif

RM was always the place to be for footballers, though Barca wasn't such a place until recent years as their philosophy isn't like RM in which to buy the best players in the world but more to nurture the best players in the world.

on chica, I think he's a waste to be on the bench la, frankly, he can play for any big clubs in the world. he can even be a shearer for newcastle type of striker. would be a pity for him to be in the bench all the time. but will be sad to see him go.

Well if he's going to Athletico, don't mind a swap for Miranda with cash offered.

If Inter, won't mind a swap with Guarin provided guarin can play Cm and not an AM instead.

His sacrifice will proof worthwhile then.

IMO, not everyone in bold can carry out the wingback role properly, I dun think Adnan is built for that. Tony V have played RB before so that wingback role is not foreign to him.
Young did well in the friendly, could be his lifeline to continue his career here.
Other than that, i dun see Nani, Adnan and Zaha occupying wingback roles anytime soon..

Yes. They don't have the defensive discipline to be a wingback as well.

Nani, Januzaj, Zaha is not fitted to be a wingback.

Well if he's going to Athletico, don't mind a swap for Miranda with cash offered.

If Inter, won't mind a swap with Guarin provided guarin can play Cm and not an AM instead.

His sacrifice will proof worthwhile then.

you're quite right.
i was trying to fit in the players we have (even though square pegs in round holes) into the 3-4-3 system.
not everyone fits perfectly into the system based on their natural strengths so i guess they need to find new roles or try to fit in.

LWB : Shaw, James, Januzaj, Nani
RWB : Rafa, TonyV, Young, Zaha

on RWB it seems TonyV and Young are eager to please LVG by playing in that position.
i see LWB is mainly James/Shaw, i remember seeing nani came on but unsure where he played, did janu play any matches so far? hmm.gif

Janu, Nani, Zaha are more RW/LW/AM hmm.gif

Just finished watching his video. Absolutely brilliant player. Real Madrid did reap the reward. What could have happen if he didn't went there.

Similar case to Luis Suarez. Everybody is dreaming of playing for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Liverpool used to have the aura but they kinda lost the aura.

that Nani fella i dunno what he doing. he shouldve grabbed his chance with both hands. He was given more like a ROnaldo at Real's role. shouldve use his dribble and speed to get at goal. when plating as winger, always shoot dun wan pass, now play up front wanna pass dun wan shoot. betul2 mau kena shoot this fella doh.gif but it was really embarrasing for him to come off after coming on for 2nd half... poor fella, hope his agent already find suitors for him. aged 27, he's supposed to be peaking now sad.gif

Nani...tried too hard to emulate CR7 but never materialized. WB is a tough position to play in, which Shaw admitted that he underestimated the role which is good because he is willing to work hard to impress the boss.

The CM position still worries me, although we have plenty in that department, it does not mean that it is good enough to challenge other teams. Vidal is a good choice, add more steel to the midfield with Fletch/Carrick/Cleverely playing back-up/rotation role. As good as he is, I don't see Carrick playing much as compared to the last two season if we sign Vidal.

Neways, good to see Fletch back at full fitness.

Update on our Adidas kit deal:

QUOTE
United has disclosed to potential investors in the new share prospectus that failure to play in the Champions League for two consecutive seasons would see the annual adidas payments drop by 30 percent from £75m to £52.5m. They would stay at that level if there was a further failure to qualify.
Conversely the fee could rise by up to £4m each year if the team wins the Premier League, Champions League or FA Cup.
A loss of Champions League revenue from UEFA is already set to cost the club around £35.5m next season.
'Our success and many achievements over the last 20 years does not necessarily mean that we will continue to be successful in the future, whether as a result of changes in player personnel, coaching staff or otherwise,' United said in the share prospectus.

'A downturn in the performance of our first team could adversely affect our ability to attract and retain coaches and players.'
United said success on the pitch is key to 'the value and strength of our brand and reputation,' with a global array of sponsorship deals helping the club generate an estimated revenue of around £430m for the year to June 30, 2014.
Claiming to have 659 million followers around the world has helped to drive up turnover in recent years, but United has conceded that 'our popularity in certain countries or regions may depend, at least in part, on fielding certain players from those countries or regions.'

----- Fletcher ---Herrera---

-----------Mata-------------

IMO, the above is the current top 3 players for the positions. backup for Fletch and Ander would be cleverly and carrick. backup for Mata is Kagawa/Rooney.

[/U]Attack:
from what we've seen of Herrera, he's gonna be the difference this season. box to box, meaning, when attacking =

--------------------Fletch----------------
-Valencia--------Herrera-----------Shaw
---Mata---------RVP---------Rooney----

6 players attacking, so basically only 1 sitting midfield(Fletch) plus 3 CBs to standby for oppo's counter attack.

when defending:

Valencia-Smalling-Jones-Evans-Shaw
------ FLetch--Herrera------------------

7 players defending plus currently defence playing very high line (which has its disadvantages). Meaning opposition would be forced to play the ball along their defence line till they find a way thru.

Teams like Barca would love to play against us every week sweat.gif coz they would slice thru us with their tiki-taka passing

bootom line, LVG mentioned he had to use 3-5-2 so that all the players can play and he could evaluate them. so, there are chances we would change tactic come the beginning of the season. I'm sure Adnan, Zaha and the wingers are heaving a headache right now, gotta choose between a fwd role or a wingback role rclxub.gif

PS: just my opinion, dun shoot sweat.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes we do have the personal for CM but currently it's more quantity than quality. If we can sign someone like Strootman/Vidal and another reliable CB, we can challenge for the title next season.

With our currently squad, imagine if Herrera gets injured, we will struggle to fight for top 4. We can't rest on our laurels based on the friendly result.

We have the biggest squad but not the most quality.

if fellana stay i think CM position arent too worrying. with herrera now and fletch looking more fit we are in better position compared to last season. we also got less game this coming season.

its CB the main priority with vidic and rio gone and now it seem we are going for 3 at the back. why arent we sign anyone yet sweat.gif

Not sure if Fletch is ready to play week-in / week-out due to his age, similar case to Carrick. But his experience for big games would be crucial. Anderson? HAHA, I already write him off long ago, doubt LVG will even give him a chance to play. As for Adnan and Zaha, probably forward role because they are mainly attackers and not really good at tracking back for defensive work. There is a chance that LVG might use different formations during the course of the year. Zaha has a season to prove to LVG that he can live up to his price tag.

agree with you in parts, but, on the 'more quantity than quality' , adding a vidal/strootman is an option, but that would leave 3 CMs on the sideline ie Fletch, Carrick, Cleverly. Getting these guys to excel in the new tactic is another (better) option, imo.

When we say quality, fletch, carrick and cleverly (from last match tongue.gif ) not enuff quality? i think they are quality players but was not operating in an effective tactic last season. Few years back, Carrick was automatic choice for 1st eleven under SAF. What i'm trying to say is, tactic will, more or less, indicate whether that player is quality or not. i think cleverly excels in the current formation, the so called 'sideway pass king' got many options now with our formation so wide drool.gif hahaha...

The CMs should only be tasked with holding the midfield and protect the back 3 CBs, coz wingbacks would be happily joining in attack plays. So, no need for the 'Anderson drivethru" from midfield...

Plus, LVG indicated that hes looking to add for defence saja. that probably means the boss is comfortable with the current midfield players. SO, do hope, as i still do, that we get Vidal, but dun hope too high ya kawan2 biggrin.gif

I think since united has got no Europe mission this season, Fletcher's fitness should be ok to cope with it and yes occasionally rotate with Carrick. I think we will do just fine

AM/LW/RW : Kagawa, Mata, Lingard, Januzaj, Nani, Zaha, Young, TonyV

I am particulary worried about the middle as well.
The bolded ones would be the starters with quality but then the rest of the backup (if based on last 2 seasons) haven't really shined sad.gif

lvg oledi said previously zaha will have to start adapting to life playing as a more advance attacker/striker role instead of the usual winger role. so, lay off zaha on the wing back role liaw.

as for the formation, the front 3 doesnt needs to be flat 3...it can oso be separated to become 1AM with 2 strikers. more like a mini-diamond upfront.

in general, it can be evolve to something like 3-4-1-2 type of formation depends on opposition.

when without ball possesion, in those friendly, can see rooney and welbeck split to sides to contain oppo fullbacks while Mata stays uptop against oppo CBs, and then Herrera or fletcher follow oppo CMs who wanna get the ball from their backline. and all these while with our backline holding highline almost inside the centre circle. very cun ar! last season not like this, CMs all just wait for oppo to enter our half and build up attack. Now, either very fast can gain back possesion or the oppo 2 CBs play ding dong with each other tongue.gif...

Yeah. There's much flexibility in the formation. If the player can learn and be flexible. It would be very interesting. Like a sequence of passing against Inter, it was awesome. Tiki-taka like. Been so low since our team played something like that.

Lazio have announced the signing of Netherlands international Stefan de Vrij from Feyenoord.

The centre-back has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Italian outfit, which will keep him at the Stadio Olimpico until the summer of 2019.
"Lazio really proved that they wanted me and I am very happy I have made this move”

Patrice Evra: Looking forward to the challenge ahead with Juventus
“The sensation here at Juve is incredible.
“I start a new adventure. I come from a club like Manchester, where I won everything and now I'm here with the Bianconeri where I have done nothing yet.
"I am someone who likes to win, I chose a team like Juve to win and I will do my best to give all that I can for the club, for the fans, for the coach and for my team-mates.

I WOULDN'T refuse anyone! Manchester United's Javier Hernandez responds to Inter interest
“I know there is much interest in me from the Italian club and I thank them for this,” Hernandez told Italian paper Corriere dello Sport.
“There are also other teams and everything obviously is pleasing, but right now I belong to Manchester United and it would be disrespectful to mention other teams even though I do not know what will happen once the tour of the US concludes.
“Do I liked the Nerazzurri? They are a great club, but if I were to transfer, I would not say no to any club.
“Italian football, however, is amongst the best in the world, I have followed it since I was little and it would be a very important showcase at a personal level.
“I am a professional player, I am committed and working in this direction, ready for any eventuality, but at this moment I cannot say any more.”

I would love Chicharito play for Atleti.Good team and good for his career. He'll never be first choice for United anymore (especially with upcoming Wilson and Keano eyeing for first team in future)

when defending:

Valencia-Smalling-Jones-Evans-Shaw
------ FLetch--Herrera------------------

7 players defending plus currently defence playing very high line (which has its disadvantages). Meaning opposition would be forced to play the ball along their defence line till they find a way thru.
Teams like Barca would love to play against us every week sweat.gif coz they would slice thru us with their tiki-taka passing
*
But spain was crushed 1-5 against dutch, although I wouldn't say in that game Spain was playing with much tiki-taka influence. The important parts are positioning when lose the ball, pressing, high line of defense.

QUOTE(sinoffire @ Jul 31 2014, 02:41 PM)
as for the formation, the front 3 doesnt needs to be flat 3...it can oso be separated to become 1AM with 2 strikers. more like a mini-diamond upfront.

in general, it can be evolve to something like 3-4-1-2 type of formation depends on opposition.
*
Yes, so far LvG has always been playing 3-4-1-2 at United.

QUOTE(king_eric @ Jul 31 2014, 03:17 PM)
when without ball possesion, in those friendly, can see rooney and welbeck split to sides to contain oppo fullbacks while Mata stays uptop against oppo CBs, and then Herrera or fletcher follow oppo CMs who wanna get the ball from their backline. and all these while with our backline holding highline almost inside the centre circle. very cun ar! last season not like this, CMs all just wait for oppo to enter our half and build up attack. Now, either very fast can gain back possesion or the oppo 2 CBs play ding dong with each other tongue.gif...
so all in all, formation is not set one, will vary from time to time
*
Spot on, the positioning was there, the movement was there, they're starting to play as a unit at defending and attacking unlike last year.

Losing the ball, forwards will be ready to contain full back, AM is pressing opponents center back/DM who holds the ball.

Wow. So many reports on vidal within the last 2 hours. All so certain that he will be unveiled at United by next Friday.

Cuordrado also seems like another name that is being thrown around....

We really need to clear some slots if there are really going to be incomings.

i don't care about that picture la. nothing in the pic indicate carrington also.

but i'm sure ronaldo wasn't on the market when united sold him.

i don't think suarez was on the market when pool sold him to barca lately.

so......? whether vidal is on the market or not doesn't matter.

Next target please...
We should not waste too much time on one player if the transfer is turning out to be so darn complicated.
Do not repeat Moysie's farce with Fabregas last season.
Focus too much on one transfer that was never going to materialize and miss out on other opportunities...

EVRA: "NANI WOULD BE A GREAT PURCHASE"
NEW JUVENTUS SIGNING URGES CLUB TO SIGN FORMER MAN UNITED TEAM-MATE

New Juventus signing Patrice Evra has urged the Serie A champions to sign former Manchester United teammate Nani, Sky Sports reports.
The French left-back also claimed that United manager Louis van Gaal intended to make him captain if he chose to stay at Old Trafford.
But Evra decided to end his Red Devils career after 379 games, joining Juventus on a two-year deal following the transfer of England wonderkid Luke Shaw from Southampton.
“Manchester United wanted to keep me and they also wanted to give me the captain’s band,” he stated.
“Van Gaal was disappointed to see me go away, but I had already made a choice.”
Meanwhile Portuguese teammate Nani has been heavility linked with a move away from Manchester, and Evra believes the skillful winger would be a great addition to his new club.
He added: “He is a great player and it was a privilege for me to play with Nani.
“If Juve are interested in him, I can only say that Nani would be a great purchase.”
Nani only made 13 appearances for Man United last season, scoring one goal.

About Nani, I believe there are few here who are hoping for him to come good, but I am for him to move on. His poor form has distracted the fact that he is not playing due to injuries more than form, and considering he is no longer a spring chicken, I say we should move on. Considering he has been linked to Juve for quite a while now, we should just offer to include him for Vidal

The situation with our defence is more interesting. LVG has said he is looking at defence, and as it is now, there hasn’t been any persistent player linked with us apart from Hummels, which is unlikely to happen. Whoever LVG is looking at, he sure is keeping his card close to his chest

You have doubts as in it sounds a bit too cheap to be true? Don't think the deal will happen unless Kayu unleashes his Super Saiyan chequebook to blow Juventus away. And I am doubtful that LVG will look to do a Real Madrid maneuver.

Don't think that needs to be done. It's more a case of whether the club is willing to make a high enough bid to tempt Juventus to sell Vidal. If Juventus decided to sell, the player would agree assuming his wage demands are met.

QUOTE(king_eric @ Aug 1 2014, 03:37 PM)
Seems that Evra wanted to move because his wife was no longer happy living in Manchester... hence some of the articles mention "personal reasons". Fair enough, he provided 8.5 yrs of service.. pity he didn't do the 10 for a testimonial, but considering his recent defensive form also a good decision for all parties.

Yea his form on tour (and even at the WC) has been really.. so typical. At his age he should be able to do better than that. As much as I hoped he would come good under LVG, if he can't or if LVG doesn't rate him then it would be best to offload him.

i have doubts as in do we really need to fork out rumoured £40m+ for a 27yo? i'd rather pay that amount to a 22yo william carvalho due to age factor + more room for improvement. soli that i might sound to FM-ish on this cos i oweis on pedo mode when it comes to buying players in FM. tongue.gif

Depends on the priority and needs. If LVG thinks that the squad is relatively good enough to get to top 4, then i agree withh WC since LVG himself says he prefer to sign youth. However if the squad is seriously lacking and might struggle for top 4, then I rather just spent the 40m for AV. He will change the team more than WC would immediately.

So need to see how LVG has accessed the squad after this tour.

Think it depends on a combination 2 things:

1) How LVG rates the current CM/squad strength, i.e. does the squad urgently need the instant impact of Vidal to be competitive or can Carvalho provide enough that it's not worth it to go for Vidal, since Carvalho is younger and can probably have more room to improve.
2) Price difference. So many rumors about the prices for both players (Vidal 35-50mil pounds? Carvalho 25-32mil pounds?), only the clubs will know the real situation. If Juventus would take Nani (price?) to offset the cost, and the final financial numbers make sense.. then Vidal might be a better pick since his reputation would also immediately give the club more money in jersey sales/etc.

Buying younger players is good (cheaper, more room to improve) but it also has it's risks (see Anderson and Nani for examples).

Only the manager and club will know enough details to weigh the decision.

On my part, Vidal would be a monster signing to make a statement. Carvalho would be promising, but I haven't seen enough of him to really rate him.

Whatever happens, to me it's not so much about who we sign, since that one the manager and club surely have their own... philosophy (LEL) .. more that we sign some guys to strengthen the squad where needed, and offload the guys who are clearly not going to fit in.

Atletico Madrid are ready to make a bid £14m for United's Shinji Kagawa, having already enquired about his availability.

I want Shinji to stay honestly. But, make this season as his last chance to fit in. If he can't, he should go back to Dortmund, where he is more at ease.

kagawa should be staying coz LVG did mentioned tht he was impressed with kagawa. so Mata's immediate backup would have to be shinji, although LVG might consider Ander as well... .

Fletcher steadily playing well this pre-season. Who needs Vidal? tongue.gif brows.gif

vidal is top 3 for his position in the world some say the best in the world. I doubt Fletcher is even in the top 30-40 in the world in his position

5. Yaya Toure (Manchester City)

If Yaya Toure hadn't missed the number of games he has this season, Manchester City would've been better off in the Barclays Premier League. The time he is injured or playing in Africa for the AFCON, City, quite clearly, struggle. Even last season, Manchester City let their lead over their neighbours slip during the AFCON, sorely missing him. The sheer strength, passing accuracy and vision, helps Yaya, dominate the midfield. Earlier this season, when City faced a daunting Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeau, Yaya Toure was the Man of the Match despite City losing the game 3-2. Such was his dominance in the game that he appeared to be the only Man in a game of Boys. A real stalwart for City, Yaya Toure is number 5 on the list only because of the games he has missed this season.

4. Blaise Matuidi (Paris Saint Germain)

Playing for team studded with players of the prowess and panache of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Ezequiel Lavezzi, and more recently, David Beckham, it is hard to make your mark. Blaise Matuidi has done exactly that. A player who absolutely loves to tackle, averaging 3.6 tackles per match Matuidi may well be considered the reason PSG are still in the Champions League. He was without doubt their only silver lining in a rather drab performance in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie against Valencia. His defensive and ball-winning abilities make him stand out at PSG and thus are a regular starter for Carlo Ancelotti's side. Add to that his ability to play on either side of the centre of the pitch at the age of 25; we get a truly special talent. He makes to number four on this list with serious promise of becoming a great defensive mid-fielder in the coming times.

3. Lars Bender (Bayern Leverkusen)

Bayern Leverkusen have had a pretty decent season thus far. For most of the season, they've been second in the table in the Bundesliga, and are just a point below Borussia Dortmund in third currently. Also, they've been the only team to beat Bayern Munich this season in the Bundesliga. Their star striker S. Keibling is currently joint top scorer in the Bundesliga and is a prime reason for their great showing thus far. Having said that, there's another rather underrated individual in the Leverkusen side, who has managed to gather 3 assists and 3 goals from a defensive position. Lars Bender has been pretty influential in his side's decent showing. He is sure on the ball and accurate with his passing too. Another player who likes to tackle, he also has managed to block seven shots so far in the Bundesliga. Only 23 years of age, Lars Bender has all the qualities to take up the role that Sami Khedira has in the German National Team and also is ready to be scalped by the major football powerhouses in European football. At number 3, for his performances both in the Bundesliga and in the Europa League, is Lars Bender.

2. Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid)

Manchester United came out with a plan against Real Madrid in their second leg. To be fair to them, they it was working before Nani was controversially sent off. The plan was simple; mark Xabi Alonso, suffocate him for space and the main supply to Cristiano Ronaldo will automatically be cut off. Once Nani got red-carded, Danny Welbeck shifted towards the right and Alonso was free. Immediately, Real Madrid looked like scoring. That is how important a player Xabi Alonso is. Sure in aerial duels and even more sure in his tackling, Xabi Alonso forms the backbone of both the Los Blancos and the Spanish National Team. He is a perfect mix of defence and attack and is probably the best defensive midfielder of recent times.

1. Arturo Vidal (Juventus)

Currently, Arturo Vidal is probably THE best defensive midfielder in world football. Not an out and out defensive midfielder, the Chilean is played more in a central midfielder's role with Andrea Pirlo just behind him in the Juventus system. But Andrea Pirlo doesn't tackle much. He is more of an architect. This means that Vidal has to play the role of a defensive midfielder as well. He averages a staggering 5 tackles per game and has scored on 10 occasions, whilst providing 9 assists in all competition. Alongside this, he successfully completes 88% of the passes he makes. At number one, staking his deserved claim is Arturo Vidal.

This is the interesting part/ability of LVG.. his ability to get performances from young (tongue.gif) players and players who previously struggled.

Fingers crossed that he can keep working his magic on the other guys who have underperformed in recent times!

Robin van Persie will miss start of the season for Manchester United in order to improve his fitness, admits Louis van Gaal

QUOTE
Robin van Persie will delay his start to the Premier League season in order to improve his fitness after missing Manchester United’s tour to America.
New United manager Louis van Gaal says the striker won’t be in the team to face Swansea City in his side’s opening game on August 16, even though his partnership with Wayne Rooney is seen as key to regaining a Champions League spot.
Van Persie, 31 this week, will begin his pre-season training at United’s Aon complex tomorrow, having taken an extended break in the Caribbean following Holland’s run to the World Cup semi-finals.

He had injury problems last season and although he is keen to play as soon as possible, Van Gaal has ruled him out of United’s friendly against Valencia on August 12 and the Premier League opener four days later.
The United manager, speaking from the club’s pre-season tournament camp in Detroit, said: ‘I’m sure he won’t play in those games. He has to train. I’m sorry, but when you have three weeks’ holiday you need training sessions, not a game.
‘Everyone can criticise me but I know what you have to do with players who have had that length of holiday. The player himself always wants to play but the other 30 players want to play also.’
Van Persie has scored 48 goals in 63 starts during two seasons at United and enjoys a close relationship with Van Gaal, but the former Holland manager substituted his star forward in the World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica and won’t give him any special treatment at Old Trafford, even though he is a candidate to be the club’s captain.

The Dutchman has also won a guarantee that the club will not arrange friendlies, in which they could earn several million pounds, when other clubs are playing Champions League fixtures this autumn.
In discussions with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, Van Gaal has asked for and received a 10-week amnesty in which he can train with his players without the distractions of money-spinning friendlies to make up the financial shortfall caused by United’s failure to qualify for Europe.

Van Gaal said: ‘I need preparation of 10 weeks and I am lucky Manchester United are not playing in a European competition to do this.
‘We have discussed the issue of friendly matches and for the first 10 weeks we have to train. After that it is different and we will wait to see if we have a chance to play some matches.
‘It will also depend on the opponent. It has to be a good opponent like this tournament in America.’
The compromise has been reached after Van Gaal complained that United’s 13,500-mile pre-season tour of America had hampered his plans.
However, it raises the prospect of them jetting abroad in December to play against other clubs who are out of Europe when the final group games are played in the Champions League or when the competition returns at the knockout stage in the spring.

Woah, chances of them coming back to Asia is pretty slim liao sweat.gif But whatever Boss says, goes. LVG>Kayu. whistling.gif

I doubt there will be any signing anymore. If there is one, Vermaelen looks the best bet. I pretty convince we are going for Strootman in Jan.

GK: De Gea (Lindegaard, Amos)
CB: Evan, Jones, Smailing (Blackett, M.Keane)
RWB: Valencia (Rafael, Lingard)
LWB: Young (Shaw, James) -- ATM, I think Shaw is not fit enough to be in 1st team
CM: Fletcher, Herrera (Carrick, Cleverley) -- Jones could cover here also
AM: Mata (Kagawa, Januzaj)
Str: Rooney, RvP (Welbeck, Hernandez, Zaha)

Unsure: Powell, Varela

Most likely Leaving: Nani, Ando, Fellaini

Looking through the football threads here, a specific team is really obsessing about united. Not even pretenders to the throne as they haven't won the premier league since it's inception. Sad to see the top team obsessing about our mid table team. Don't they know that we acknowledge Chelsea, arsenal and city as contenders not those selling club.
