Hi fellas,

I failed my SI at Petronas in 2013, have to wait for 2 years now for a retry. Just went for an interview at another PSC but the job offered is surprisingly doesn't suit my qualification. Almost a non-executive position. But I really wanna work in oil and gas. Patience is my best friend now. sad.gif

Malaysian player SapuraKencana Petroleum has secured more work for its drilling division in the form of new contracts and an extension worth a total of $700 million. [COLOR=blue]

Wholly-owned subsidiary Petcon has landed a brace of contracts with Petronas Carigali to provide two tender-assist rigs, SKD T-9 and SKD T-10, for development drilling work off Malaysia.

The SKD T-9 has been hired for an initial five years, effective from next month, with an optional two-year extension while the other unit has been taken on a three-year lease starting in August and extendable for two more years.

Another tender-assist rig, SKD T-18, has been tanken on charter by Chevron for development drilling off Thailand under a separate five-year deal with wholly-owned subsidiary SapuraKencana Drilling Asia, due to start this month.

Wholly-owned offshoot Seadrill Jaya has meanwhile gained a one-year contract extension with BP for use of the tender-assist rig West Jaya off Trinidad, due to start in August.

Really SapuKencang...Just announced the finding on 4 exploration wells and now secured more contracts for their tender rigs.....

Sona Petroleum expects revenue flow beginning FY2014

Posted on June 17, 2014, Tuesday

KUALA LUMPUR: Sona Petroleum Bhd is optimistic of posting revenue and profit beginning its financial year 2014, from the positive cash flow it would generate from its acquisition of Salamander Energy (Bualuang) Ltd, said managing director Datuk Seri Hadian Hashim.

“The signing of the sales and purchase agreement for a 66.7 per cent stake in Salamander PLC’s wholly-owned subsidiary Salamander Energy is expected no later than June 26.

“The transaction will result in Sona Petroleum owning an effective working interest of 40 per cent in two oil and gas blocks owned by Salamander Energy in the Gulf of Thailand,” he told a media briefing after Sona’s annual general meeting here on Monday.

The acquisition of the 66.7 per cent of the economic rights and 49 per cent of the voting rights in SEBG will enable Sona to benefit from joint control over strategic and financial decisions, he said.

Hadian said the two concessions, close to the Bualuang Field in the Gulf of Thailand, represent excellent opportunities for Sona.

The blocks include an active oilfield that has been producing since 2008 and rights to explore surrounding fields.

“These assets represent great value for Sona Petroleum as they will enable us to generate cashflow and also provide significant upside to our profitability going forward,” he said.

“The deal with SEBG will allow Sona Petroleum to start receiving 40 per cent of the revenue, and with about 5,000 to 6,000 barrels a day and at current oil prices, the potential income for Sona is substantial,” a source related to the company said.

For FY2013, the special-purpose acquisition company which made its debut on Bursa Malaysia in July last year has not generated any revenue other than interest from fixed deposit placements.

It registered a net loss before taxation of RM5.1 million.

Hadian expressed confidence that Sona Petroleum would successfully meet the qualifying acquisition requirement within the stipulated time frame, and begin the process of generating healthy cash flow to bring returns to shareholders and other stakeholders. — Bernama

UMW-OG allocates RM2 bln for capex this year

Posted on June 17, 2014, Tuesday

KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Oil and Gas Corporation Bhd (UMW-OG) has allocated RM2 billion for capital expenditure this year to grow its fleet assets as part of its expansion plan.

Its president Rohaizad Darus said the company spent RM1.7 billion last year as part of the listing proceeds to add to their fleet of premium jack-up rigs, and is expected to add three more rigs – the UMW Naga 6,7 and 8 – which will be delivered in September and December 2014 and September 2015 respectively.

“We currently own five oil drilling rigs, of which three are operating outside Malaysia – the UMW Naga 5 in the Philippines and the UMW Naga 2 and 3 in Vietnam – while two (the UMW Naga 1 and 4) are serving the Malaysian market,” he told reporters after the company’s annual general meeting here yesterday.

Eight rigs is a comfortable figure but beyond that the company will have to look into adding more people not only on the rigs but also at the office dealing with procurements and support, he said.

Rohaizad said the company spent RM20 million to set up a drilling academy in collaboration with Institut Teknologi Petronas called UMW-INSTEP Drilling Academy, which started operations in March this year and is expected to train 120 people a year.

This year the company also participated in 25 tenders worth around US$2.2 billion including 13 outside Malaysia, and is quite confident of getting at least 30 per cent, he said, adding the contract tenure ranges from two months to over two years.

Meanwhile UMW-OG Chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin said the oil and gas landscape is very encouraging, with a healthy domestic market plus increased activities regionally including in non-traditional oil producing countries Myanmar and the Philiphines.

He said the company will continue to play a role in creating a more sustainable Malaysian and Southeast Asian drilling industry, adding it would also look for opportunities in the Middle East. — Bernama

DNV GL reported Monday that experts from Noble Denton Marine Assurance and Advisory in DNV GL have helped CNOOC perform the first offshore platform installation in China using advanced dynamic positioning (DP) floatover technology. The installation of CNOOC’s HZ25-8 DPP (Drilling Product Platform) topside was successfully completed in the eastern waters of the South China Sea for the Enping Oilfields.

“The success of HZ25-8 DPP topside DP floatover installation is a perfect realization of applying world-class offshore structure installation technology in the South China Sea area. Our cooperation with international leading technical service provider DNV GL has enabled the new breakthrough of COOEC’s technology and competence in offshore installation,” said Ruhua Yuan, Vice General Manager of COOEC.

“As a result of the merger between DNV and GL, we can now help customers reduce operational risk even further by partnering with a single global marine advisor. The Noble Denton Marine Assurance and Advisory section in DNV GL has unique and extensive experience of float-over operations both on to floating hulls and fixed platforms. Our experts were able to help CNOOC perform the floatover installation safely, while saving time, manpower and material resources,” said Wolfgang Wu, Regional Manager of DNV GL Oil & Gas in China.

DNV GL’s Noble Denton Marine Assurance and Advisory experts provided technical support to CNOOC with two challenges in particular: transverse load-out and dynamic positioning (DP) of the floatover installation. To ensure the safety and success of the load-out and floatover operations, DNV GL applied expertise and operational experience gained from its worldwide involvement in large topside transverse load-out operations and conducted thorough testing of the ballast and DP systems on HYSY278. Based on the test results and taking into account the tide level in the quay and the characteristics of the ballast air compressors, DNV GL was able to optimize the loadout operational procedures and ballast sequences.

The project first started in 2013 when DNV GL Shanghai and Singapore was invited by COOEC to cooperate on the verification of the HZ25-8 DPP topside DP floatover installation, detail design and joint installation design. With the load-out weight exceeding 13,000WT, this project is the largest transverse load-out operation in China to date.

During the design stage, DNV GL performed DP capability analysis, time domain analysis, docking, undocking and mating analysis, in order to assess the capabilities of the DP system under different sea states and the limited weather conditions for floatover installation operation. This analysis helped the site operation. In addition, DNV GL engineers, DP operators and field engineers participated in the simulation test organized by COOEC in Netherlands. It simulated the docking and undocking operation under several virtual environments, enabling the team to make contingency plans in case of failure of one thruster.

“We look forward to further cooperation with CNOOC and other Chinese oil and gas companies to contribute to the development of China's oil and gas industry,” continued Wu.

I would like to share my experience and observations regarding this.

First of all, from what I know the local companies that offering this Trainee Drilling Engineer are UMW and Perisai. I'm came from one of them tongue.gif .

From my observation (local companies), yes, the training is to develop you to become a rig key personnel i.e. Driller, Toolpusher, OIM etc...Is it advisable? I would say yes because you will work as a regular roustabout, roughneck, etc etc....and will know well about the rig equipment and operations. First hand experience!

For some of the international drilling contractors (Transocean, Seadrill, Ensco, Diamond etc), they have different programs, either to develop management positions (rig manager, asset manager, subsea supt) or specific rig positions program (Driller, Subsea Engineer, Mechanic, ET etc)

In near future you want to switch to become drilling engineer (operating company/office job)? Yes I saw some of the trainees (international company) made that switch after a few years doing rig jobs (still in the program)...But, I never saw a guy completed his/her training and become a regular Assistant Driller or Driller switched to become Drilling Engineer. They already have fix rotation job with 4weeks on and 4weeks off (fully paid). Some of them that I see will progress up to become OIM or Rig Manager(office job) or another rotation jobs i.e Drilling Supervisor (operating company) or Directional Driller (services company).

So, for the start it is a good exposure and experience to start working hands-on in this trainee program if you are  good with physical jobs and know how to be good with people around you (friend/networking).

Later on, along the way the process you might have a better view or a better choices...
*
anyone know how to apply for this trainee program? coz didnt see any ads regarding this program on their websites?

Hi guys,

I got an interview for the position of reservoir user support engineer with Exxon mobil after a chit chat with their HR. The interview will be this friday. The job description says that the main role is provide support for users of Eclipse, MBAL and prosper and seems to require an experienced user with 3-5 years experience. Since i am sure that the HR knows that i am in many a sense anfrsh graduate with no working experience in the industry, will Exxon mobil provide extensive training?

While i have a masters in PE, we only used Roxar, Eclipse and MBal for simple case studies and may not be an expert user although i find using Eclipse and Roxar very straight forward. I have no experience in prosper.

Does anyone have any tips what to expect and prepare for during the interview? Should i read more on reservoir softwares that is required?

This is my second proper interview after CGG(waiting for result of the second phone interview after which there will be a face to face interview), id like to get well prepared and any feedback and tips would be appreciated.
