When you use digital zoom, you are not in full resolution.

S3IS is indeed a very good camera.

Just to show a 100% crop of a photo taken just now.

100% crop

Of course this can't be compared with macro lens, but still the detail is a steal with the price of RM1400.

Added on August 10, 2007, 9:36 amOh ... i nv try set the "My Colours".
It's in the setting??
I only use ISO100, will try the ISO80 next time.

Mean while, can any share you night scene photos??
I dont like to use the flash, i will spoil the actually look.
But S3 produce lots of noises. Therefore the most i use is ISO200.
But this will cause lots of 'ghost movement' when shooting ppl.

I always ask my friends... dont move ah.... wait ah... hold on ah.... tongue.gif

i'm deciding whether to get this camera or not, 2nd hand. is the EVF and LCD really that bad as mentioned in many reviews? any users that have both S3 and S5?

i'm interested with photography lately and decided to get one cam but if possible, staying away from pocket cam.

My opinion. The video, 12x zoom, super macro, handle, rotate lcd is amazing.
However, ISO400 lots of noise! too bad.

If u low in budget. Get this as for practices or beginner lo.
But tell u 1 thing. it's not really convenience to carry around. cause the size is big, cant fit into pocket.

I'm thinking of getting myself a SideBag to carry this camera.
Any1 hving it? Can u pls share yr advice and comment??

@JET

the size doesn't scare me though. it's the lcd and the EVF. many stated that EVF is not bright enough and the lcd is too low resolution. the video mode limited to 8min/1GB but on S5, 30min/4GB. the camera doesn't come with a bag? ohmy.gif

Added on August 10, 2007, 11:50 ammoreover, i don't intend to use iso200 or above unless i have a dslr. even iso200 is pretty noisy already.

Woahh kelvinyam.. Ur lizard look so cute (though I hate lizards!) EVF not bright enough? I think it is too bright that when I upload my pix on my CRT, the pix are wayy darker.. Best viewed on LCD monitor.. That's what I really hate..

For me, it comes with an original S3 pouch.. Which you can actually use it as a bag with the strap on your camera.. But it looks pretty gay.. And the video.. I'm not much of the video kinda person.. Firstly cause I am not good at editing/converting videos.. But all I know that video quality is superb but it eats up your memory like a beast, especially if you're on a max of 640X480 with 30fps... Crazy!

Well in good situations, this camera is pretty damn good. But I've been limited by it quite a few times.

My take on the S3:

Manual control is good. M,AV - I use these the most.
ISO is good up until 200.
IS works, I guess, as I can get hand held shots at half-a-second pretty blur free.
Video, I like the high FPS though I've only ever used it once.
Don't really like the LCD as it's pretty hard to see in bright light. Composing a picture through the EVF and LCD can be tough at times.
Super macro is fun to play with. So is the 12x Zoom.

All in all, a pretty great cam to start shooting with, barring a few negatives.

Hi Xannava, still couldn't decide yet?
Well, S3 is the best-bang-for-the-buck if I shall rate it. Flashless shot? It really depends on the environment. In short, yes it does. Horse racing? I bet it will do it very well. Get a used unit if you have limited budget. If you can spend RM1400, get S5 since S3 is obsolete.

I have a question here, perhaps someone good in maths can advise me.

My objective is to achieve a max magnification for macro photography with the zoom set at max, which is 432mm for S3. The shortest shooting distance is 90cm.

If I use a 1.5x Tele-converter TC-DC58B, the focal length become 648mm, but the shortest shooting distance has increased to 200cm.

So do I get a larger magnification with the Tele-converter?

The problem with close up lens is that I don't have much room to play with. Some insects are very shy, going to near will scare it away. Besides, going too near won't have enough OOF back ground compares to long focal length.

Exactly! Most insects that I can find in my house is super shy. They take a peek at you and they will slowly sneak away. sweat.gif

Slowly sneak away? Or do you mean fast?

I got an answer from the other forum:

QUOTE
This is a weird behaviour - with DSLR lenses, the TC does not increase the focussing distance.

Anyway, considering that you get 1.5x the FL but more than 2x the distance, I think that you get less magnification. Other than that, the image quality would be very poor.
