i'm deciding whether to get this camera or not, 2nd hand. is the EVF and LCD really that bad as mentioned in many reviews? any users that have both S3 and S5?

i'm interested with photography lately and decided to get one cam but if possible, staying away from pocket cam.

@JET

the size doesn't scare me though. it's the lcd and the EVF. many stated that EVF is not bright enough and the lcd is too low resolution. the video mode limited to 8min/1GB but on S5, 30min/4GB. the camera doesn't come with a bag? ohmy.gif

Added on August 10, 2007, 11:50 ammoreover, i don't intend to use iso200 or above unless i have a dslr. even iso200 is pretty noisy already.

seem like we are in same boat. camera paid by our "government". but in my case, not 100% but subsidized.

i'm still deciding on S3 and S5. S3 is hackable and i like hackable stuff. S5 has better screen/EVF, redeyes removal in video mode, basically faster response but shorter battery life, SDcard placement.

so, in the end, headache thinking which one to get. again, can any S3 user comment on the screen and EVF? is't really a problem viewed under bright light?

Both S3 and S5 LCD suffers from bright light. S5 does give you higher resolution, but I think that's only a nice-to-have feature.
S3 has lower resolution, so the noise is marginally lower than S5 at the same ISO setting.
Another point to keep note is the burst rate. S3 is having higher burst rate that S5. Higher burst rate is helpful when you are capturing something moving fast as there's no time for you to compose. You just burst out many shots and hope that one looks good.

thanks a lot for your comments, kelvinyam. u help me make my decision. my money on S3is laugh.gif

both S3is and S5is have same size sensor, that's why S5is noisier. burst rate, S3is wins but response, S5is win due to DIGIC III.

S3is here i come nod.gif

S5 cost rm2xx more than S3. if buying new camera, get S5. if already have S3, dont bother.

S5's improvement over S3 in no particular order,
1. bigger brighter screen
2. "better" EVF
3. 4GB video limit
4. red eyes removal in video mode
5. faster startup and more responsive
6. hotshoe (don't bother, if got money to purchase speedlite, get DSLR)
7. IMHO, useless face detection

downgraded compare to S3:
1. burst rate reduce from 2.5fps to 1.9fps
2. battery perform worst
3. intervalometer gone
4. higher noise if compare pixel to pixel
5. weight more
6. memory card placement, cant change it when on tripod
7. DIGIC II is hackable and scriptable (i like this the best)

this is what i know based on my weeks of researchs on this two camera smile.gif
