To be frank, if you're applying though Job sites, you will need paper qualifications to add weight. HR won't know your experience before talking to you. Hence, paper qualification is the first "impression".

I came to S'pore in 2007. Worked as an engineer in the manufacturing industry - $30k/yr. Along the way, I earned my MBA and now pursuing another Masters. My new paper quals allowed me to move into another sector and now I'm doing well for my age bracket - early 30s. On a side note, my MBA also earned me my life partner  icon_rolleyes.gif

but there is still hope for rest of us. Heard a forumer here graduated from high school with just STPM, but drawing s$3.5k salary. frequently travel for business trips as well. Someone that I could look upon as an idol.

How you know it is wise to move from IT support to InfoSys Engineering if you don't know what it is?

Not sure your skill set allows you to move on to other technical job such as programmer. But I know most people moves toIT sales or project management when they are sick of IT hands on.

Thanks for reply. Yes, i no really understand what job roles can do graduated from Information System Engineering. My skillset can transfer to programmer but i not really good in programming. IT sales or project management sound ok for me. Yeah, i really sick of IT hands on jobs. sad.gif

If you want to see it from landlords' point of view, all these rentals are business, and business they want as much certainties as they can get. No verbal contract especially you are some stranger from the street to them no matter how good you think you are. Given the spike in SG properties recently, landlords have their upper hand in choosing tenants they want to rent, raising the price, demand whatever they want.

Always remember these 5 words, work every where. "U tak suka, u keluar." But you did already keluar so its ok. Annyong.
There are only that many better degree around. Sooner or later those better degree will be employed, then those left over jobs are out for grabs.
*
I am also looking at it from the point of a landlord since i am one myself (Not in singapore since i dont own any property in singapore).

I used to own property in Sydney at the advice of a good friend as well as some of my relatives who also own properties in australia, had the house rented out for a few months before my agent informed me that a PRC was interested in my property and was willing to pay above market price to secure it ASAP.

Alot of bureaucracy, legal framework and advance cheques just to satisfy the landlord requirements and to lock in to further negotiations from what my friend who is working in singapore is telling me.

In korea, i just approach a local housing agent, and put in a price which is negotiable, if the landlord is ok with the inital offering, i will meet the landlord in person to view the place, make the final offer and if everything is ok, sign the tenancy agreement and handshake on it. No LOI BS and issuing a cheque just to prove to the landlord that i am serious about renting, if i wasnt, i wouldnt be searching through an agent in the first place.

I used to work in sg 2 years back and whenever i rented, there was no LOI. Just meet up with the landlord and agent to discuss everything in person and get it done there and then.

I guess renting is quite a terrible process once the human element aka the landlord is usually never present during negotiations.
*
like what Fiona Chin said, if you don't like all the hassle (LOI, etc) just find another place to rent/ landlord which doesn't have so many processes, is not like Singapore is only left with a few room / units to let.

I personally don't think that an agent should get the 1 month rent when all he/she does is just show up in front of the unit and show with a piece of paper for me to sign.

I renting mine without paying the agent fee. Any agent/ landlord which require me to pay the agent, I just decline. It might take me some time but I eventually found one that suit my liking.

I am from IT Support fields and need some guidance. I got several years IT support experienced on IBM and SingTel now, but i graduated from Degree information system engineering. Feel like stay at IT Support not has good career path and getting bored on IT support fields as always feel less motivation and passion. Feel nothing to learn too in IT support fields as always encounter common issues. Isn't wise to give up my IT support experience and go to Information system engineering related jobs? Actually how you guys define the Information system engineering? What roles isn't? sad.gif
*
I am also in support, what so boring about it ? Everyday sit in office, surf net and wait for end of month $$$ smile.gif

Just keep polishing your current skillset and add more stuff that interest you into your skillset would be my advise. No point for you to chase a certain 'in thing', it might be in demand now, but when you are about done with it, its no longer a shinny thing. With your expanded skillset more opportunity will open up for sure.

I am assuming here you are doing normal IT in-house support (my printer can't print, why internet slow, etc), and this are getting boring having the same issues reported again and again. Perhaps you can research on using different ticket tracking, creating a self help wiki for the staff or wiki for your support colleagues (if there is none right now), POC, etc .. so many things to improvise smile.gif, doing that and suggesting to your higher up will also put you in their radar for promotions, etc... or potential cold storage tongue.gif (since you might be a treat to them) hahahaha

Hello to all PRs and any Singapore Citizens here!

I am due to enter NIE for teacher training this August and in order for that to happen, I need to look for two guarantors before the 21st of June. Would anyone here be willing to assume that role? The guarantors basically are liable to any damages and fines should I choose to leave NIE or not serve my 3 - year bond.

Of course, I have no intention of breaking the bond and plan to honour all 3 years of it! However, should anything happens to me in the course of my training or service, my family have the financial means to cover any fines or damages. I am asking the goodwill of two persons out there to lend me their signature for this. (One must be a Singaporean, the other a PR)

Basically I have no relatives in Singapore and my friends here are all under a bond with MOE so they are not eligible. I have tried asking around but to no avail so am turning to you guys here. smile.gif If I cannot find two guarantors to accompany me for my Teacher Training Agreement signing next Saturday, MOE will retract their offer and I may very well have to say good bye to Singapore! sad.gif

For those who would like to know more, feel free to PM me. I am willing to provide more details and meet up with the person.

Lastly, all help will be much appreciated. This is something which I cannot handle alone unfortunately sad.gif and I have exhausted all seemingly viable options.

No sane people will do it for an unknown forumer.

But since we need to I help u u help me I can do it for for PR roll. But your family need to deposit the same amount of fines and damages MOE charging to a fixed deposit account under my name. The money with its interest earn will be fully returned to you after you obtain the MOE release bond letter. (Now read the next sentence see convincing for you or not) Of cause I won't run away with your money (the next day). I plan to stay and work here for at least 5 years more. My family will have the financial capabilities to pay for money if I decided to run from you.

Anyway try talk to MOE of your problem. This is not new to them. I signed the MOE tuition grant bond for my fiance for his degree. His other guarantor is his friend with student pass. The amount of grant should be larger than NIE. Or you need to thanks those who ran away without serving bond with overseas guarantor so MOE tighten the rules now.

Ask MOE if you can lodge a bank guarantee in lieu of guarantors. Then ask your family's bank to issue a bank guarantee in favour of MOE.

Lol, i am talking about my friend who having no experience in renting a whole unit with the LOI since it was usually more straight forward with meeting with the housing agent and landlord, talking it over and signing the tenancy with no LOI in sight.

I am not living or working in singapore anymore so this doesnt affect me one bit but i understand why my friend who is encountering the LOI for the first time is rightly pissed that an extra step in renting a unit is there. When i used to rent my house in Sydney, there was no such thing as an LOI, i just keep on contact with my agent through e-mail or skype and if both parties agree on the price and terms, then my agent will set up everything for me.

I understand that completely! An acquaintance of my father provided the same suggestion I thought wouldn't it be more prudent if one obtains the Banker's guarantee instead! However, even that I worry as I might not have sufficient time to do so! sad.gif A substantial amount of money has to be transferred to Singapore.

Unfortunately the surety for tuition grant is subjected to very lenient criteria. In particular, a surety for a latter could be one on a scholarship. Whereas for myself, the surety must be free from a bond, which compounded matters! In fact, those under a tuition grant would not be eligible. That was a surprise to me.

Nah, I believe MOE would like to retain their trained teachers hence the measure.

Still, thank you for responding. I really appreciate that! At this juncture, I am open to any suggestions.

That is an alternative provided by MOE but I don't have any $$ here in Singapore. I worry that the bank might take too long a time to deal with this. Though I am seriously considering it.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway! biggrin.gif

On the PR part, you can try 2 of the top bankers in this forum, keeganz & deodorant. Easily in the $250k per annum group, I'm sure you guys could work something out.

Try talk to MOE, or the officer's boss if you can't settle with the officer in charge. All these issues are not new, there are always people like you who are new to SG and don't have any established relationship with PRs/locals yet. Came to know of it more than 10 years ago, some high demand uni courses need locals to sign, but overseas students how to get locals to sign? Those who set these rules are missing something.

Hi All forumers,

Been searching many forums for the answer but hearing something different from different sources. I am a Malaysian. Can you advice on the below:
1) If I am offered a job in Spore (wt working pass), can I continue to drive my Malaysian car in everyday (pay the SGD20+ERP etc...) as long as I want? I plan to reside in JB.
2) Can I continue to use my Malaysian driving lisence with my Malaysian car to commute daily from JB-SG-JB?
3) Can I use a car thats not registered under my name to commute daily from JB-SG-JB?
4) If I read correctly on the info links from the 1st page, the tax I would pay under work pass is flat @15%. Is there a max or a min? There are also no tax rebates/deductions correct?
5) *sensitive question* How much could one expect to be paid in situations like this? SGD 5-7k? 7-10k? 10-12k? 12-15k? above 15k? I know circumstances can vary but any sharing on this is appreciated for me to negotiate the best package for me and my family.

I have no immediate plans to apply for a PR as the rentals in SG is too high. I cant afford a decent place for my wife+3 kids.

Appreciate all your advices.
