I heard that someone here working in banking industry and manage to jump from 2k starting salary to 100k pa in just 3 years. Mind to teach or share your journey?

Seriously that could be very helpful to people like me who just join the bank and having a personal banker role.

Willing to treat a meal(food court, I only could afford that)

Thanks in advance, sifu

3 years to 100k p.a. salary while not a myth is extremely difficult to achieve. The only 2 successful methods which i have seen to achieve that is either a hotshot trader or a well connected private banker. Oh, also possible if you are in a tier 1 investment bank i.e. goldman and these people don't start at sgd2k for sure. One common trait you will notice is that these people are extremely smart and present extremely well able to rub shoulders with the whose who without feeling out of depth. Most are also ivy league unis maybe except for the private bankers. But private bankers must have the connections and most come from well to do families anyway. As for the rest of the banking sector, all myths.

Hi robertchoo. That's a wonderful insight from you. It's really informative and could help me in planning my path in banking industry. However your hard truth seems to dampen my hope. Those position or segment is far from my current level.

Thanks for the advise. It's a long one and full of information for me. I'm from a poor family and doesn't have much network or connection to royal family.
I do know a big shot from Royal family in southern, but I doubt he will entertain me.

I just manage to break into SG banking industry which have plenty of myth saying the banker could easily earn 100k, or most will be elite in few years time.

I'm just wondering does till applicable to local grad or those in Ivy League. I'm starting from personal banker and the most junior level in banking.

When I saw someone here post that it's possible to earn 24k p.a to 100k p.a. I'm impress. Would want to know more.

Anyone more willing to share.

I'm also interested to learn more, seems like banking sector in Sg attracts the cream of the crop, while engineering is where those who cannot make it in banking go to.

Any chance for an engineering grad working in a local sg company to join the banks and make 100k in 3 years? Or how long would it take?

When i came here and felt naked from this paper country, i considered obtaining an MBA.  Happened to chance upon a director of a very big cooperation.  He sincerely advice me not to embark on MBA because the market is flooded with such.  Only reason worth doing so is to built some strong connection while doing the course and those are the key to success.  Thus get into prestigious or expensive MBA course or forget it.  Dont flame me tongue.gif  just sharing my 1 cent opinion.

btw, nobody here casino lover? sad.gif

ur opinion resonates with what i always practice especially regarding furthering my studies. i've not taken any additional papers since degree. dime of a dozen out there nowadays. easily IT support from India have a phd.

no point getting papers if there's not effective gratification from it.

i'm not sure the thing about having mba/phd means getting higher pay as oppose to having more experience in the same field.

i think relationships are the key of course hard work, actually good in the field helps alot. but good relations can bring u half way, the rest is on ur own.

Some MNCs which like to think of themselves as 'progressive' encourage their employees to be involved in "continuous learning".

My company's management for instance, likes to count PhDs and MBAs. They put into the annual reports, press statements, customer meetings, investor relations, government relations etc. They like saying stuff like:

- our Shanghai R&D center is home to 500 PhDs
- 50% of our Singapore accounting service center have professional qualifications and/or postgraduate degrees
- 80% our managers have MBAs

Sometimes... it's a check-the-box kind of thing. Having it won't give you an automatic promotion. But NOT having it when all your competitors have it... could cost you a promotion.

Yea bingo, something like that. Starting salary is not 2k, maybe more than twice of that for local ivy league's cream.

probably one way to estimate a person earning I guess is to see what his credit card limit is, if for example it's 25k limit then likely the owner is on $12.5k monthly liao.

Hard truth: No chance. Stop obsessing about sgd100k pay package. Most bankers don't get paid that much even after 15-20 years. Some won't even hit half that amount in their entire banking career. Stop comparing yourself to the cream of the crop (unless you are one, in which case you won't be "wondering" anyways). If you ever wondered if you have the chops to earn sgd100k a year in 3 years, the answer is you don't. Coz people who do don't wonder. They know they can and they go out and do it.

I have no idea what the official / legal stance is, but I have entered SG with <6 months passport validity using the Autogates on EP.

I guess as robertchoo said earlier on, don't obsess with the 100k pa thingy. Although you are earning 50k pa, so long you get the work life balance. That's more important.

I learn this from my fellow friend which I idolize.
