need recommended for android tv box...in stead of buying a expensive PC that consume space/power/money lol

my budget is within RM500 - 800

My personal requirement:
- display out up to 4k supported
- dd/dts 5.1-7.1 pass-through / analog stereo
- android app fully compatible like a android phone
- HDMI / analog stereo / Gigabit LAN / WiFi-N with AC / USB ports / BT 4.0
- video/audio multi codec supportive, perhaps chipset supported decoding naively (reduce CPU consumption/temperature)
- HDMI input (others video input from astro/gaming/whatever display i can switch within this android TV box interface)
- huge online video stream database that something like mibox
- can be custom flush OS and root (aggressive official/unofficial developer *hack stuff)

ya found HiMedia and MiniX Neo...
this 2 very similiar lol duno which are good
*
my understanding is these 2 are the top best brands in terms of hardware reliability and features.

assuming comparable models, yr final decision will depend on:

.. firmware & apps support
.. need for hd audio
.. price, if very sensitive

good luck.

some of us have been thru a couple of years and diff models, grew with it. wink.gif

The Nvidia box is not bad but yeah pricey. Go for it if you can afford it. KODI used to be called XBMC after Microsoft's Xbox... Yes, it sounds complicated but trust us, it's way easier than you think and it only starts with a few steps. I can't say this enough, a properly configured KODI installation on well supported hardware is the best. Today, installation is a breeze. In the past, one had to install KODI via third-party sources (now its in the playstore), run it and manually add sources, repos, addons, tweaks, settings, skins, manually update a playlist.m3u file for live TV, etc...but today, just install via the playstore, add a source, then a repo, navigate to said repo and run a zip file, wait a couple of minutes and ALL the best addons are automatically installed, you do one reboot and voila! It really does not get easier than that (wait, until someone else makes it even easier biggrin.gif ). You can even backup and transfer said build across devices, Easy.
Go for the HiMedia if Chinese content and more passthru formats support is absolutely important to you. I have the Minix Neo X8-H Plus and it performs more than satisfactorily. Why? cuz in addition to its stock firmware, its tweaked. Between Minix & Himedia, I'd go for Minix (duh)....

Minix (My take):
Great support, Tweaks, Official Firmware is easy to get & released regularly (OTA updates), partial HD sound passthru support (no DTSHD-MA or 7.1 passthru available yet), Easy to root n unroot, full Android apps support, PS3 controller (confirmed, want wireless? Root box n install sixaxis app) and most well known gamepads are plug and play (root not needed to use wirelessly cuz bluetooth), Minix devs work directly with KODI devs to improve the software on Minix boxes, Gigabit lan, Smooth UI, no lags, no crashes or surprise reboots, etc.

wow great info bro, ya lo i was thinking MiniX coz their dev support really aggressive...
about the DTS partial passthru i not so understand, do they mean not all kind of DTS?

well for my DTS basically is those mkv that came with DTS 5.1 which ripped from BD, i dont think they have DTS-HD/NEO:X so advance la...coz just max 1.5mbps of audio bandwidths...
for me i think if u have a great AV receiver + 5.1 for example denon avr-X1200 series + a SoundWare XS 5.1 Home Theater System will perform more than enough already...coz my living room just 2x2 meter open space not a cinema room la haha so ah those apa DTS advance HD/neoX memang x laku for me lol

Essentially movie files containing HD audio formats such as AC3 / Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 / 7.1, TrueHD 5.1 & 7.1, DTS-HD MA & HR will be decoded and played on the device, however when it comes to passthru and letting your Denon AVR do the decoding, some formats will be down-sampled and sent to the AVR to continue decoding process and audio output. So in this aspect, the HiMedia lords over Minix with more options. However as you wrote, even great 2.0 speakers will output nice sounds, so you should be good. You've got a decent AVR setup, most just play using TV speakers only. I guess full HD audio support is more for cinema rooms and audiophiles.

at this time, many devices cannot pass thru hd audio incl dtshdma, dd truehd and dd atmos.

i do not know if this is due to hardware cost or simply reluctance to pay for the licenses.

well, assuming yr avr can handle all of that.

however, most devices can handle core dts, core dd.

it will just downgrade hd audio to core.

if yr collection is mostly mkv dts/dd, then it's not relevant.

but if u plan to go bdmv/iso with hd audio, you will want to have that capability.

had a blast yesterday with terminator genisys dd truehd.

i can't watch blockbusters w/o home theater with hd audio anymore. tongue.gif

If I connect the following:

AA
HDMI from box to TV

BB
RCA from box to AVR and AVR to TV

AA is for normal viewing (don't want to switch on the AVR unncesssarily)

BB is when I want better sound reproduction (action movie, concert)

Is the above possible?

Thanks.

P/S With AA & BB setup, I can reduce the volume from TV to have 5.1 sound from the AVR. Problem now is, TV is getting 2 video inputs - from HDMI and also from the AVR. No problem? I thought video input from AVR is processed and won't this confuse the TV with 2 different video signals? I am new to this AVR thing. Thanks.

Yes, I can unplug the box to TV HDMI when using the AVR. I am the lazy type. Ha.
