These days, do airconds need magnetic starters?

I haven't given much thought about it, but right now I can hear a faint hum coming from the starter, and it's also warm to touch.

Because if I don't need it, and it wastes electricity and makes noise, I should get rid of it?

New aircon is already have a starter built in. And it been long time since back late 90's. I still remember Panasonic have a ads about this advantage.

Your magnetic starter contactor that energize metal part is getting dirty. (Forget the metal part name) It can't close properly together due to the surface dirty. That cause the humming sound.

If yours is a new aircon, just direct joint it. Or put a 20A switch to replace the starter.

It doesn't come with a starter; it was a leftover from the old window rattler aircond (from 15 years ago or something like that).

I don't know why the contractor didn't just wire the new aircond directly instead of through the starter shakehead.gif
