My car has 3M tint for 12 years++ already.

But the tint got many scratches now all over and the vision is heavily affected by the scratches.

So I would like to replace the tint with very cheap tint. Any recommendation?

Besides, will changing tint affecting the heating lines as well as the rain sensors for auto wipers?

Lets say u insured is rm3k, your windscreen cost at rm2k, u can ask the shop to install the tint as your current use within rm1k. Insurance will needs the tint card as proof during claim. In short ask the windscreen shop to do it for u

How cheap does it need to be? Totalgard (Kepong) Ceramic IRR series can probably get for around <RM500 (according to their Wasap business number - can find on my post on previous page here), although you may need to add a bit if they charge to remove your scratched up old tint film.

Rain sensing wiper sensor likely not affected, but you risk damaging your defroster lines when removing the old tint. You can search online for a DIY method to remove it yourself without damaging the lines, but it’s a slow and time consuming process, and even that is not a guarantee if it’s an old car/tint, because the film and defroster strips have gone through many cycles of heating and cooling, so very likely some of the defroster material has fused with the film already.

Hope this helps.

Icic. Thanks. I only need to replace the front windscreen and not the rear windscreen. So I believe it should be safe to do so? Since front windscreen does not have the heating lines?

Besides, possible to just replace tint for front windscreen only and not the whole car?

Possible. Just visit any car accessory shop. Ask for highest IRR film. Price likely between RM200 - 500, depending on brand. Most modern cars with front demister function usually blow warm air up via vents on the dashboard, right? I’m not certain since I’ve never needed to use it (not even in Genting) here.

Regarding rain sensing wipers, best you double check since yours is a relatively old car. Some older cars use an IR sensor placed somewhere inside the dash or on the rear-view mirror that detects raindrops using infrared beams, so a tint with high IRR rating might affect it. I’ve not encountered any car that had rain sensors not work with tint though.

ok. Thanks a lot for the info.

Yes the vents blow warm air for front windscreen and it is not using heating lines as the rear windscreen.

Will ask the car tint shop for info. I am not going to use back 3M tint Becos my car is real old. As long as it can filter UV is good for me.

I think the rain sensor for auto wipers is at the top centre part of my car front windscreen.

My wife was asking, since most tints have 99% UV protection and I ops for 98% IRR. Is there any possibility for fungus to grow inside the car... Asking for my wife...

Depends. If using those coil mat, carpet type mat, wet floor after raining can make it wet and trapped the bad odour. That for me the fungus potential than using tint with higher IRR

If you use smart tag or those infraredcard or tag to access housing estate, you might not be able to use them if IRR is really 98%.

Fungus growing in car is due to moisture trapped in car like wet carpet, leaked rain water on car floor, etc. In another word, large amount of water or wet things in trapped in car. With or without tint, fungus will grow if trapped long enuf.

Otherwise, I don't think even dark tint has any issue with fungus growth.

I might be getting a car with a discounted Raytech tint.

Offered a raytech free tint lowest AC or AX grade.
If I buy the car, I will upgrade it (at a big discount) to QC series package (2nd highest grade) coz the IRR is 90%.

Would have chosen the highest Ultra/RC grade but heard many already say Ultra70 not smart tag friendly due to 98% IRR? Side windows also 98%, so I just select QC range 2nd highest grade with 90%, so got less issue with smart tag and those infrared house tags/card.

So now checking on spec first, will IRR 90 have issue with smart tag signal?
Updated : Raytech confirmed only the highest RC / RX range not smart tag friendly. The rest, smart tag friendly.

Those aren’t really high spec Llumar flavors. Not sure if the price worth it or not.
Also, don’t believe all this “shop will settle saman for you” stuff.
