You need to compromise a bit.
Matlab - really depends on the complexity of your simulation and how large is your data set hmm.gif
home video editing - depends on the tools you use, whether the software support CUDA or OpenCL utilising GPU for processing.
Performance wise, there is not much difference between Ivy Bridge (gen 3) and Haswell (gen 4) CPU.

If you really want i7 quad core with your budget:
Fujitsu
LH532, i7-3632M + Nvidia GT620M@RM2299 [2.1kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8

Lenovo
Z400 touch, i7-3632QM + Nvidia GT740M + (1366x768, touch)@RM2599, 4GB, 1TB, W8; 2 years warranty

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

time to update my news...

the last time i check, the best bang-for-buck lappie is the Lenovo Y400p...but since then, they improve the spec (a bit ONLY) but there's a huge jack up in the pricing...

so i was wondering currently what model is the best bang-for-buck for budget below Rm2.5k?

1. brand: acer, asus, any brand
2. budget: below RM2K, if possible below RM1.5K
3. usage: surfing, watching video, light word processing.
4. screen size: 14-15, prefer 14

guys
- I am looking for a replacement laptop (5yr old) for my parent use.
- They only use it for usage listed above, no gaming or whatsoever
- I am looking at 8GB ram, current old laptop when browsing with many tap will get slower and slower until eventually hang, so I think future laptop must have 8GB ram.
- a question, can build in graphic handle 1080p video and win8 interface?
is dedicated graphic needed? If dedicated graphic is are needed kindly recommend model coming with it.
(I prefer no dedicated graphic because no gaming requirement)

thanks

No need for quad core just in comparison to say i5-4200u and i7-4500u with 8gb.

Video just simple editing with pinnacle.

If a particular model come on with 4GB or less RAM standard spec, you could insert another RAM stick (4GB ~ RM100, 8GB ~ RM200) if there is vacant RAM slot.
For the usage listed, discrete GPU is not needed. Intel HD is sufficient.

Acer
E1-432-29552G50k, Intel 2955U + Intel HD@RM1099, 2GB, 500GB, FreeDOS
E1-470-33214G50s, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1399, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS

Asus
X451CA-VX007H/012H, Pentium 2117U + Intel HD@RM1449, 4GB, 500GB, W8, 1 year warranty

Dell
Inspiron 14, Pentium 2127U + Intel HD @RM1099[1.99kg], Linux, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 6-cell; W8.1SL @RM1299

Video editing - Pinnacle studio can utilise Nvidia CUDA (just make sure you turn on hardware acceleration in option menu).
If you are willing to forgo quad core, there are more choices hmm.gif

Hi guys in the market for a 14"

1. Asus, lenovo, but still open to other suggestions
2. 2k-3k
3. School work + light gaming, i.e. dota 2
4. 14" maybe smaller but not bigger.

Was considering the Lenovo y410p but heard that there is a heat issue

got recommended the Asus K451LB, but don't know about that. the build quality feels worse and the battery is built in. cant seem to find any reviews on it either.

Any other laptops with decent build quality, decent spec and removable battery?

With your budget and 14", this is the only Asus model with spec worthy of consideration. If you don't like it, move on.

Lenovo
Y410p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT755M(GDDR5)@RM2899, 4GB, 1TB, DOS, red backlit, 120w psu, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty

the temp is high since it pack an i7 quad core and GT755M inside a 14". If you don't like it, Z series run even more hot and the battery is inside the shell. So move on.

Dell
Inspiron 14R, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM1849 [2.32kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), Linux, 6 cell; W8@RM2049

Its definitely a good laptop. Other laptop thats on par or better is MSI gaming laptop. I think now is a good time to buy laptop because of pc fair and everything. Take advantage of the "free gift" and reject it to get a better price for the laptop. The gift is usually useless anyway. nod.gif

This is 14R (difference is the wireless card). You search for 15R yourself.
